Befriend the beautiful, complex family of parts within you to find your calm, compassionate center.
I have been making my own herbal tinctures for over 20 years. I share these topics as starting points for your own research.
These guides offer ideas for your own research, not a recommendation to use a product or change medical treatment. Paul's coaching focuses on life and spiritual guidance.
About Paul and his workImagine, for a moment, that your inner world is like a family. There are many different members, or ‘parts,’ each with their own beliefs, feelings, and roles. Some parts are young and vulnerable, holding the pain of past hurts. Others are protective, working hard to keep you safe from further pain. And some are managers, striving to keep everything in order and under control. Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a powerful and compassionate way of understanding this inner family. It’s a therapeutic model that sees our psyche as a collection of these different parts, all of which are valuable and have good intentions, even if their methods are sometimes extreme.
The core principle of IFS, and what makes it so profoundly healing, is the belief that at the center of this inner family is a wise, calm, and compassionate core Self. This Self is the true you, the essence of who you are. It is naturally whole, resourceful, and loving. The goal of IFS is not to get rid of any parts, but to heal the wounded ones and to restore the Self to its rightful place as the leader of the inner system. It’s about creating a harmonious inner family where all parts feel seen, heard, and valued, and where the Self can guide you with clarity and compassion. This is why the foundational book by Dr. Richard Schwartz is so aptly titled No Bad Parts.
IFS works by helping you to access your core Self and, from that calm and centered place, to connect with your different parts. Instead of being overwhelmed by a part (like anxiety or anger), you learn to step back and get to know it with curiosity and compassion. You might ask the anxious part, “What are you afraid of?” or “What are you trying to protect me from?” As you listen to its story, you begin to understand its positive intention. Perhaps the anxiety is trying to keep you from getting hurt in a new relationship, based on a past heartbreak.
From the perspective of the Self, you can then offer this part what it truly needs, not judgment or suppression, but understanding, reassurance, and love. This process is called ‘unburdening,’ where the part can release the old pains and beliefs it has been carrying. As parts unburden, they are free to take on new, more supportive roles in your inner system. The work is beautifully detailed in Internal Family Systems Therapy, Second Edition by Richard Schwartz and Martha Sweezy, which offers a thorough look at the model in practice.
You can begin to practice IFS on your own by simply noticing your inner world. When you feel a strong emotion or a compelling urge, instead of identifying with it completely, try to get curious about it. You might say to yourself, “A part of me is feeling really angry right now.” This simple shift in language creates a little space between you and the part.
From there, see if you can connect with the part from a place of curiosity. Where do you feel it in your body? What does it look like? What does it want you to know? Try not to judge or analyze its answers, but simply listen with an open heart. You can let the part know that you hear it and that you appreciate its efforts to help you, even if its methods are causing you distress.
For a more structured approach, Jay Earley’s book Self-Therapy provides a step-by-step guide to using IFS for your own healing. And of course, working with a trained IFS therapist can provide a safe and supportive container for this deep and life-changing work.
IFS has been one of the most life-changing frameworks in my own life and in my work with clients. For a long time, I was at war with a part of myself that was a harsh inner critic. It would tell me I wasn’t good enough, that I was going to fail. I tried to ignore it, to argue with it, to push it away, but nothing worked. It was only when I learned to approach this critic with curiosity, from my Self, that things began to change. I discovered that this part was terrified of failure and was trying to protect me from the shame it associated with not being perfect. As I offered this part compassion and understanding, its voice began to soften. It didn’t disappear, but it transformed from a harsh critic into a gentle encourager. This is the magic of IFS: it turns inner conflict into inner harmony.
Your inner world is a rich and beautiful scene, full of different parts that are all doing their best to help you. I invite you to meet this inner family with the same warmth and compassion you would offer to a dear friend. Know that there are no bad parts, only parts that are in pain and in need of your love. As you learn to connect with your wise and loving Self, you will discover a source of healing and wholeness that has been within you all along.
