Gently reconnect with the most tender part of you to heal the roots of your present.
I have been making my own herbal tinctures for over 20 years. I share these topics as starting points for your own research.
These guides offer ideas for your own research, not a recommendation to use a product or change medical treatment. Paul's coaching focuses on life and spiritual guidance.
About Paul and his workDeep within each of us, there lives a younger version of ourselves, our inner child. This is not a regression or a step backward, but a sacred meeting with the part of you that holds your earliest experiences, your purest joys, and your deepest wounds. Inner child work is the beautiful, tender process of reconnecting with this precious part of your being. It’s about listening to the whispers of your past, understanding how they shape your present, and offering the love, safety, and validation that your younger self may have longed for.
So many of our adult patterns, our fears, our insecurities, our ways of relating to others, are rooted in the unmet needs of our childhood. When we start on the journey of inner child work, we are not blaming our parents or dwelling on the past. Instead, we are lovingly reparenting ourselves. We are becoming the compassionate, steady, and unconditionally loving presence that our inner child has always needed. This work is profoundly healing because it gets to the very root of our suffering, allowing us to release old pain and step into a more integrated, whole, and joyful way of being.
Inner child work is a deeply personal and often gentle exploration. It involves creating a safe inner space to connect with your younger self. This can be done through visualization, journaling, or simply quiet contemplation. The goal is to build a relationship of trust and communication with your inner child, to hear their stories, feel their emotions, and understand their needs. As the renowned author and therapist John Bradshaw explains in his seminal work, Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child, this process is about rescuing the wounded child within and allowing them to feel seen, heard, and loved.
Through this process, we begin to see how past experiences are influencing our present-day reactions. That flash of anger when you feel unheard? It might be your inner child feeling dismissed. That wave of anxiety in social situations? It could be your younger self fearing rejection. By recognizing these connections, we can respond to ourselves with compassion rather than judgment. We can offer our inner child the reassurance and care they need, which in turn calms our adult nervous system. A helpful resource for this journey is the Inner Child Recovery Workbook, which provides practical exercises to guide you through this healing process.
Begin by finding a quiet moment for yourself. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to soften. Imagine a younger version of yourself, perhaps at a specific age that you remember vividly. See this child in your mind’s eye. What are they doing? How are they feeling? Approach them gently, with an open heart.
You might ask them, “What do you need right now?” or “What do you want me to know?” Listen for the answer, not with your ears, but with your heart. It might come as a feeling, an image, or a quiet knowing. Offer this child your love and reassurance. You might imagine giving them a hug, holding their hand, or simply sitting with them in loving presence. Let them know that they are safe, that they are loved, and that you are here for them now.
Journaling can also be a powerful tool. Try writing a letter to your inner child, expressing your love and commitment to them. Or, you could write a letter *from* your inner child, allowing them to express their feelings and needs freely. As Alice Miller so brilliantly illuminates in The Drama of the Gifted Child, acknowledging the truth of our childhood experiences is a crucial step toward healing.
For years, I carried a deep sense of not being good enough. It showed up in my relationships, my work, and my relationship with myself. It wasn’t until I began to connect with my own inner child that I understood where this feeling came from. I met a small, sensitive boy who felt he had to be perfect to be loved. As I began to listen to him, to hold him in his fear and loneliness, something deep shifted within me. I realized that the love and validation I had been seeking from the outside world was something I could give to myself. This work has been the cornerstone of my own healing journey, and it’s a path I walk with my clients every day. It is the sacred work of coming home to ourselves.
Your inner child is waiting for you, dear one. They are waiting for you to turn toward them with love, to listen to their stories, and to offer them the healing embrace of your own compassionate heart. This is not a journey to be rushed, but a gentle unfolding. Be patient with yourself, be kind, and know that every step you take toward your inner child is a step toward your own wholeness.
