The body keeps the score, but you don't have to play the game.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I consciously release the past from my body and make space for peace in the present.""
We are a culture of clenchers. We clench our jaws, our fists, our buttocks. We hold our breath. We live in a state of chronic, low-grade tension, a physical manifestation of the psychic stress of modern life. This tension is not just muscular; it is emotional. It is the residue of every unspoken anger, every swallowed tear, every moment of fear we didn’t allow ourselves to feel. The body, in its infinite wisdom, stores this unresolved energy in our tissues, creating a literal armor of contraction. The “Tense & Release” practice is not just a relaxation technique. It is an act of somatic archeology. It is a way of consciously excavating the frozen history that is stored in your body, and letting it go.
The field of somatic psychology, pioneered by people like Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen, is based on a simple premise: the mind and body are not separate. Our emotional history is written in our physical structure. Reich coined the term “character armor” to describe the chronic muscular tension patterns that develop as a defense against emotional pain. For example, someone who was taught as a child that “crying is for babies” might develop chronic tension in their jaw and throat as a way of literally holding back the tears.
Somatic Experiencing, a body-based trauma therapy developed by Peter Levine, builds on this understanding. Levine observed that animals in the wild, after a life-threatening event, will literally shake and tremble to release the massive amount of energy that was mobilized for fight or flight. Humans, with our big, analytical brains, often interrupt this natural process. We tell ourselves, “I’m fine,” and we override the body’s instinct to release the trauma. That energy then gets trapped in the nervous system, leading to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
The “Tense & Release” practice is a way of consciously completing this interrupted cycle. By intentionally tensing a muscle group, you are bringing your awareness to the stored energy. You are “lighting up” the neurological circuit that is holding the tension. And then, with the release, you are giving your nervous system the signal it has been waiting for: the danger has passed. You are safe. You can let go.
In Taoism, health is synonymous with flow. A healthy body is one in which qi, or life-force energy, is flowing smoothly and freely through the meridians. Tension is a sign of stagnation. It is a place where the river of qi has become blocked, creating a stagnant pond of pain and disease. The goal of Taoist practices like Qigong and Tai Chi is to dissolve these blockages and restore the natural, unimpeded flow of energy.
The Tao Te Ching (Chapter 76) says, “Men are born soft and supple; dead, they are stiff and hard. Plants are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and dry. Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death. Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life.”
The “Tense & Release” practice is a way of consciously choosing life. It is a way of moving from rigidity to fluidity. By tensing and releasing, you are reminding your body of its natural state, which is one of dynamic relaxation. You are not forcing the release; you are creating the conditions for it to happen. You are like a gardener, gently loosening the soil so that the water can penetrate to the roots. You are not fighting the tension; you are befriending it, understanding it, and then lovingly letting it go.
I had a client, a man in his sixties, who came to me with a severe case of “frozen shoulder.” He could barely lift his arm, and he was in constant pain. He had been to physical therapy for months with little improvement. I asked him when the pain had started. He told me it had begun about a year ago, shortly after his business partner of thirty years had suddenly and acrimoniously left the company.
I guided him through a “Tense & Release” practice, focusing on his shoulders and arms. As he tensed the muscles in his right arm, the one he used to shake hands, the one he used to sign contracts, I asked him to bring to mind the feeling of betrayal he had experienced. As he released the tension, he let out a deep, guttural sob. He cried for a full ten minutes. It was the grief and rage he had been holding in for a year. He had literally been carrying the weight of that betrayal in his shoulder.
We continued this practice for several weeks. It wasn’t a miracle cure. But with each session, he released another layer of the stored emotion. His range of motion began to improve. The pain began to subside. He was not just healing his shoulder; he was healing his heart. He was learning that the body is not a machine that breaks down; it is a living, breathing, feeling organism that is always speaking to us, if we are willing to listen.
This card is an invitation to listen to the stories your body is telling. It is a call to honor the wisdom of your own flesh and blood. Where are you holding tension? What are you clenching? What old story is your body still trying to tell? Don’t just stretch the muscle. Release the memory. The body keeps the score, but you don’t have to play the game.
This is a practice of Progressive Muscle Relaxation, a classic technique for deep, somatic release. Find a comfortable position, either lying down or sitting in a supportive chair. Close your eyes.
1. **Start with your feet.** Curl your toes under and tense the muscles in your feet. Hold the tension for a count of five, feeling the contraction. Then, release the tension completely and feel the wave of relaxation that follows. Notice the difference between tension and release. 2. **Move up to your lower legs.** Tense your calf muscles. Hold for five. Release. Feel the warmth and heaviness of relaxation. 3. **Continue this process up through your entire body,** one muscle group at a time: your thighs, your buttocks, your abdomen, your chest, your back, your hands (make a fist), your arms, your shoulders (hunch them up to your ears), your neck, and your face (scrunch it up tightly). 4. **For each muscle group,** tense for a count of five, and then release completely, taking a moment to savor the feeling of letting go. 5. **After you have moved through the entire body,** lie still for a few minutes, enjoying the state of deep relaxation you have created. Scan your body for any remaining tension and, with your breath, invite it to soften and release.
This practice is a powerful way to reset your nervous system and to release the accumulated stress of the day. It is a conscious act of letting go, a declaration that, in this moment, you are safe, and you are at peace.
When the Tense & Release card appears, it is a clear sign that you are carrying a significant amount of unprocessed stress and emotional tension in your body. You may be feeling anxious, irritable, or physically exhausted. Your mind may be telling you that you’re fine, but your body is telling a different story. This card is a wake-up call to pay attention to the wisdom of your physical self.
This is a time to prioritize somatic practices that help you release stored energy. This could be Progressive Muscle Relaxation, yoga, dancing, shaking, or any form of movement that helps you get out of your head and into your body. The Tense & Release card also suggests that there may be an old emotional wound that is ready to be healed. The tension in your body may be a clue. Is it in your jaw? What are you not saying? Is it in your shoulders? What burden are you carrying? This card invites you to a process of deep, physical, and emotional release. It’s time to lay your armor down.
Scan your body right now. Where do you feel the most tension? What emotion or situation might be connected to that physical sensation?
What is one thing in your life that you are “white-knuckling,” trying to control through sheer force of will? What would it feel like to consciously release your grip?
Describe a time when you felt completely relaxed and at ease in your body. What were the circumstances? How can you invite more of that feeling into your life today?
