Fake Love

When the heart’s mask crumbles, truth burns brightest.

The Teaching

Look, I've been doing this work for three decades, and if there's one thing that breaks my heart over and over, it's watching people cling to fake love like it's the real thing. Know what I mean? We're so starved for connection that we'll take scraps and call them a feast.

Here's the thing about fake love: it always comes with conditions. It's the partner who loves you when you're agreeable but withdraws when you speak your truth. It's the friend who's there for the good times but vanishes when you're struggling. It's the family member whose affection depends on you playing a role that keeps them comfortable. Truth is, fake love is really just emotional manipulation wearing a prettier mask.

But here's what's interesting... we often participate in creating fake love without even realizing it. We perform instead of being present. We say what people want to hear instead of what's true. We twist ourselves into pretzels trying to earn love that should be freely given. Are you with me?

I remember working with a client who'd spent twenty years in a marriage where she was loved for being the 'perfect wife' but never for who she actually was. She cooked the right meals, wore the right clothes, smiled at the right moments. But the moment she stopped performing, the love disappeared. That's not love, friend. That's a transaction.

Real love doesn't require you to shrink. It doesn't ask you to hide your opinions, dim your light, or pretend your needs don't matter. Authentic love sees your shadows and doesn't run. It witnesses your growth and celebrates it, even when that growth means you're changing in ways that might be uncomfortable for others.

Fake love is exhausting because you're constantly monitoring yourself. Am I being too much? Too little? Too emotional? Too distant? You're walking on eggshells in your own life, and that's no way to live. Seriously.

Think about that. When you're receiving real love, you feel more like yourself, not less. You feel safe to be messy, to have bad days, to disagree, to take up space. Real love doesn't punish you for being human.

The tricky part is that fake love can feel so good in the beginning. It's often intense, immediate, overwhelming. It sweeps you off your feet because it's designed to. But sustainable love? That grows slowly, roots deep, and doesn't need constant drama to prove its existence.

Honestly, one of the hardest parts of recognizing fake love is admitting that we might have been settling for it. There's shame in that recognition, and I get it. But here's what I've learned: the people who love conditionally are often operating from their own wounds. They're giving what they know how to give, which might be all they've ever received.

That doesn't make it okay, but it can help you have compassion for both them and yourself. You weren't wrong for wanting love. You weren't wrong for trying to earn it. You just didn't know yet that real love doesn't require earning.

The path forward isn't about becoming bitter or closed off. It's about developing discernment. It's about learning to tell the difference between someone who wants to possess you and someone who wants to know you. Between someone who loves your potential and someone who loves your reality.

Wild, right? How different our lives would be if we insisted on authentic connection from the start.

How to Embody This Teaching

Here's how you start recognizing and releasing fake love: Begin by paying attention to how you feel in your relationships. Do you feel more like yourself or less? Do you find yourself editing your words, hiding your feelings, or performing a version of yourself that you think will be more acceptable?

Try this practice I call 'the authenticity check.' For one week, notice every time you catch yourself about to say or do something primarily to gain approval or avoid conflict. Don't judge it, just notice it. Are you with me? This isn't about becoming a difficult person; it's about becoming a real person.

Next, start setting small boundaries. Express a genuine preference. Share an actual opinion. Say no to something you don't want to do, even if it's small. Watch how people respond. Real love will respect your boundaries. Fake love will push back, guilt you, or withdraw affection as punishment.

Practice sitting with the discomfort that comes when you stop performing. There's going to be anxiety at first because you've been trained to believe that your authentic self isn't lovable enough. That's the wound talking, not the truth.

Finally, start giving yourself the kind of unconditional love you've been seeking from others. Speak to yourself with kindness. Accept your flaws without trying to fix them immediately. Be present with your own emotions without judgment. Truth is, you can't recognize real love from others until you know what it feels like to receive it from yourself.

When This Card Appears

When this card shows up, you're being asked to look honestly at the relationships in your life. Something isn't as real as you've been pretending it is, and deep down, you know it. Maybe you've been accepting crumbs and calling them love. Maybe you've been performing for affection instead of receiving it freely.

This card isn't here to make you paranoid about everyone's motives. It's here to remind you that you deserve better than conditional love. You deserve to be seen, accepted, and valued for who you actually are, not for who you think you should be.

If you're in the middle of a relationship that feels unstable, dramatic, or exhausting, pay attention. Real love doesn't require you to constantly prove your worth. It doesn't keep you guessing about where you stand.

This might also be pointing to ways you've been giving fake love to others without realizing it. Are you loving people for their potential instead of their reality? Are you withdrawing affection when they don't meet your expectations? Honestly, we all do this sometimes.

The invitation here is to choose quality over quantity in your connections. Better to have one person who really sees you than ten who only love your performance. Your authentic self is worth protecting, and this card is reminding you of that truth.
