Where your heart points, your life flows.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I set my intentions with clarity and courage, aligning my actions with my deepest truth."
Intentions are not just fluffy thoughts or vague wishes; they are the sharp arrows that direct the trajectory of your life’s energy. If you don’t set clear intentions, you’re like a ship without a rudder, at the mercy of every wave and wind. Intentions cut through the noise, the distraction, and the spiritual bypass, grounding you in real, actionable purpose.
The Tao Te Ching reminds us, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." That step must be intentional. Without intention, that step becomes a stumble. The sage doesn’t just drift with the currents; they know where they want to go and move accordingly.
In Advaita Vedanta, the teaching is clear: the Self is beyond all action and intention, yet this world of form requires us to engage. Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita says, "You have the right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions." This is where intention becomes sacred. You act with intention, but you let go of attachment to outcomes. That fierce balance is what keeps you grounded and free.
Intentions are the bridge between who you are and who you want to become. They are the fire that ignites transformation but beware, the spiritual path is littered with people who set intentions that sound good but are really just ego-driven agendas dressed in spiritual clothes. Intentions must be honest, tender, and real, no sugarcoating or bypassing the hard stuff.
Consider this real-life example: A woman I worked with kept setting the intention, "I want to be successful," but when we dug deeper, success meant pleasing others, avoiding conflict, and hiding her true desires. Her intentions were hijacked by fear and people-pleasing. When she shifted to, "I intend to speak my truth, even when it scares me," her entire life shifted. Intentions that honor your authentic self create ripples that change everything.
Buddhism teaches us about Right Intention as part of the Noble Eightfold Path. Right Intention is about renunciation, goodwill, and harmlessness. It’s not about forcing outcomes but aligning your will with compassion and clarity. When your intention is free of grasping and aversion, it becomes a force for liberation.
Intentions are a practice, not a one-time declaration. They require checking in, recalibrating, and sometimes fierce honesty with yourself. They are the compass that keeps your spiritual practice from becoming an escape hatch. When you hold your intentions tenderly but firmly, you create a life that’s not just lived but deeply alchemized.
"The mind acts like an enemy for those who do not control it.", Bhagavad Gita
This quote is a warning: if your intentions are unclear, your mind becomes your worst enemy, spinning stories, doubts, and distractions. But when you set intentions consciously, your mind becomes an ally.
So, get fierce with your intentions. Write them down, speak them aloud, and live them out loud. No more spiritual bypassing with vague hopes. Get real. Get raw. Intentions are your sacred contract with yourself and the universe.
Begin each day by sitting quietly for five minutes. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Ask yourself: "What do I truly intend to bring into my life today?" Let the answer arise without judgment. Write down your intention in a journal. Make it specific, actionable, and aligned with your authentic self.
Throughout the day, check in with your intention. When you feel distracted or reactive, pause and ask: "Is this action or thought moving me closer to my intention or away from it?" This simple practice grounds you and keeps your mind from running wild.
At night, reflect on your intention. Celebrate where you honored it, and compassionately note where you strayed. Adjust your intention as needed. This is not about perfection but about realignment and presence.
When the Intentions card appears, it’s a clear signal to get brutally honest about where your energy is flowing. Are your intentions truly yours, or are they borrowed from others or shaped by fear? This card demands clarity, asking you to drop spiritual fluff and face what you really want and why.
It also invites you to remember that intention without action is empty, and action without intention is chaotic. Align your daily choices with your deepest truth. Let go of attachment to outcomes while holding tight to your purpose.
This card encourages you to cultivate right intention, free from egoic grasping and filled with compassionate clarity. It’s a call to wake up, get real, and own your path with fierce tenderness.
