About Paul and his work

My dear friend, on our shared journey of healing, we often discover our greatest strength not in force, but in a steady, open-hearted presence. The Warrior II pose, or Virabhadrasana II, is a beautiful embodiment of this truth. It's a practice that invites us to stand firm in your power while remaining soft and receptive to the flow of life. It's a dance between effort and ease, a powerful reminder that you can be both a warrior and a sanctuary of peace. Know what I mean?

What It Is

Warrior II is a standing yoga posture that builds strength, stability, and concentration. Picture yourself as a graceful warrior: your front leg is bent, your back leg is extended, and your arms are stretched wide, parallel to the ground. Your gaze, or drishti, is fixed over your front fingertips, looking toward the horizon.

Here's the thing about this pose. It's not about aggression or forcing anything. It's about the focused, unwavering energy of a spiritual warrior who's grounded in their truth and open to the universe. Think about that. You're simultaneously reaching toward the earth with your legs and extending toward the sky with your crown.

Honestly, when I watch people settle into Warrior II, there's this moment where everything clicks. Their breath deepens. Their shoulders drop. Their gaze softens but stays focused. It's like watching someone remember who they really are beneath all the daily chaos. Are you with me?

The Sanskrit name Virabhadrasana comes from the fierce warrior Virabhadra, but here's what's interesting: this warrior was born from love, not anger. He emerged from Shiva's compassion, not his rage. So when you're in this pose, you're channeling that same energy. Fierce love. Protective compassion. Strength with an open heart.

How It Supports Your Healing

Look, I've been working with people for three decades, and I can tell you this: Warrior II is medicine for the whole person. On the physical level, sure, it strengthens your legs, opens your hips and chest, and improves your balance. But its true gift lies in how it quiets the mind and fortifies the spirit.

Truth is, we live in a world that's constantly pulling us in different directions. Right? Your attention gets scattered, your energy gets drained, and before you know it, you're feeling disconnected from your own power. But when you hold Warrior II, something shifts.

As you settle into the pose, you're cultivating what I call "relaxed determination." You're strong, but you're not forcing. You're focused, but you're not tense. It's this beautiful paradox where effort meets ease. And in that meeting place, self-doubt starts to burn away. Fear loses its grip. You remember that you can face whatever comes with a calm, courageous heart.

I've seen this pose work wonders for people dealing with anxiety. The grounding through your legs while reaching through your arms creates this sense of being anchored and expansive at the same time. Wild, right? It's like you're telling your nervous system, "I'm safe, I'm strong, and I'm exactly where I need to be."

But here's what really gets me excited about Warrior II: it teaches you to be present with discomfort without being overwhelmed by it. You're holding this challenging shape, your muscles are working, maybe your legs are shaking a little, but you learn to breathe through it. To stay soft in your face. To find that eye of the storm inside yourself.

How to Use It

Let me share some ways I've found to weave this pose into daily life, because honestly, you don't need to be on a yoga mat to access its power.

Morning Intention Setting: Begin your day with a few rounds of Warrior II on each side. I like to hold each side for about eight breaths, using the time to set an intention for the day. What energy do you want to carry? How do you want to show up? The pose becomes a physical prayer, a way of aligning your body with your heart's deeper knowing.

Midday Power Reset: When you feel scattered or overwhelmed, step away for just three minutes. Even in your office clothes, you can move into a modified Warrior II. Turn one foot out, bend that knee, stretch your arms wide. Seriously. It's like hitting a reset button on your nervous system. I've had clients do this in bathroom stalls during stressful workdays. Don't laugh... it works.

Evening Processing: Here's something beautiful I've discovered. Hold Warrior II when it comes down to it and let whatever emotions are there just be there. Anger, sadness, frustration, joy... let it all move through while you stay grounded in the pose. It's incredibly healing to feel your feelings while simultaneously feeling your strength.

Mindful Hold Practice: Work up to holding each side for 10-15 deep breaths. Focus on the sensation of your feet connecting to the earth and your heart expanding toward the sky. When your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring your attention back to your breath and that steady gaze over your front fingertips.

To support your practice, having a stable surface makes all the difference. I particularly love the Liforme Yoga Mat for its grounding feel and helpful alignment markers. Those little lines really help you find your foundation.

After the strength of Warrior II, your body will crave some release. I always suggest moving into Child's Pose for a few breaths. It's the perfect counterpoint... from fierce warrior to sweet surrender.

Remember, dear one, every time you step into this pose, you're honoring the warrior within. You're not just building physical strength, you're building the kind of inner resilience that carries you through life's challenges with grace. Trust in your journey, and let this practice remind you of the incredible strength you already carry. You've got this.
