A gentle, body-based practice to release deep-seated tension and trauma, inviting deep peace and restoration.

About Paul and his workMy dear friend, our bodies are wise vessels, holding the stories of our lives. Sometimes, they carry burdens of stress and trauma that we long to release. I've found TRE (Trauma Release Exercises) to be a profoundly gentle and empowering practice for letting go. It's a way of honoring your body's innate wisdom, allowing it to shake free the tension it's held for so long. This isn't about forcing or striving; it's a loving invitation to your nervous system to find its way back to a state of natural calm and balance.
TRE is this beautiful series of simple exercises that help your body activate a natural shaking or tremoring mechanism. Here's the thing: this isn't a sign of weakness, but rather your body's own intelligent way of discharging stored tension and trauma. Think about it. Animals in the wild shake after escaping a predator, right? They literally shake it off and move on. We humans? We tend to hold it all in.
Developed by Dr. David Berceli, this practice is rooted in understanding that our bodies know how to heal themselves. The tremors are this gentle, neurogenic process that originates deep in the psoas muscle, a core muscle that's connected to our fight-or-flight response. When we're stressed or traumatized, that psoas muscle contracts and holds the tension. TRE helps it release.
What's wild about this is how simple it actually is. You're not talking about your trauma. You're not reliving anything. You're just doing some basic exercises that fatigue certain muscle groups, and then you lie down and let your body do what it knows how to do. The shaking starts naturally, usually in your legs, and it can spread throughout your body. It's like your nervous system is finally getting to complete a conversation that got interrupted years ago. Know what I mean?
I've watched people experience this for the first time, and honestly, there's often this moment of recognition. Like, "Oh, my body knows exactly what to do." It's pretty amazing.
Look, inviting TRE into your life can be a deeply restorative act of self-love. I've seen it help people soothe anxiety, reduce symptoms of PTSD, and create this sense of deep safety and groundedness in their own skin. Many folks find that it improves sleep, increases energy, and builds greater emotional resilience. It's like gently unwinding the knots of chronic stress and trauma that affect our physical and emotional well-being.
But here's what's interesting: TRE doesn't ask you to analyze or understand your trauma. You don't have to figure anything out or make sense of your story. Your body just gets to release what it's been carrying. Think of it as a loving dialogue with your nervous system, one that says, "It's safe to let go now."
I've worked with clients who've tried everything. Talk therapy, medications, meditation. And while those things can be helpful, sometimes the body needs something different. It needs to move the energy that's been stuck. TRE gives it permission to do just that.
The effects can be immediate and deep. People often report feeling lighter, more grounded, like they can breathe deeper. Some notice they're sleeping better within days. Others find that chronic pain starts to ease up. It's like the body finally gets to complete these stress cycles that have been running in the background for years. Wild, right?
Truth is, we're not meant to carry all this tension. Our nervous systems are designed to discharge stress naturally, but modern life doesn't always give us the space or safety to do that. TRE creates that space.
Exploring TRE is this journey of self-discovery, and honestly, it's best to begin with gentleness and curiosity. I can't stress this enough: start slowly. Here's how I recommend approaching this practice:
Find a Certified Practitioner: Especially when you're new to TRE, working with a trained facilitator can provide a safe and supportive container for your experience. They can guide you through the exercises and help you understand what's happening in your body. Seriously, this isn't something to rush into alone.
Start Really Slowly: The exercises themselves are simple, but the release can be deep. Begin with short sessions, maybe 10-15 minutes, and pay close attention to your body's cues. If the shaking gets too intense, you can always stop it by standing up or pressing your feet firmly into the floor. You're in control the whole time.
Create a Sacred Space: Practice in a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be disturbed. Dim the lights, maybe put on some soft music. Allow yourself to be fully present with your experience. This is your time to connect with your body's wisdom.
Learn from Trusted Sources: While there are many resources available, I always recommend learning from Dr. David Berceli himself. His book gives you the foundations of the practice and helps you understand what's happening in your body. You can find his book here.
Listen to Your Body: Some days your body will want to shake, other days it won't. Honor that. Some sessions might be gentle, others more intense. There's no right or wrong way to do this. Your body knows what it needs.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after your sessions. Think about it: you're releasing stored energy and tension, and your body needs support to process that.
As you explore this path, you might find a beautiful connection with other somatic practices like Breathwork, which can further support your journey of healing and release. They work beautifully together.
Remember, dear one, your body is a sacred temple, and it holds the key to your own healing. Trust its wisdom, be gentle with yourself, and know that you're held in love every step of the way. Are you with me?
