A gentle, compassionate practice for opening the heart and transforming suffering into love.
I have been making my own herbal tinctures for over 20 years. I share these topics as starting points for your own research.
These guides offer ideas for your own research, not a recommendation to use a product or change medical treatment. Paul's coaching focuses on life and spiritual guidance.
About Paul and his workDearest friend, in our shared journey of healing, we sometimes encounter pain, both in ourselves and in the world around us. It can be tempting to turn away, to close our hearts to suffering. But what if we could learn to embrace it with love? This is the beautiful invitation of Tonglen, a practice that has been a gentle yet powerful companion in my own life. It’s a way of breathing in the pain of the world and breathing out love, a simple yet deep alchemy of the heart that can transform our relationship with suffering and open us to the boundless well of compassion that resides within each of us.
Tonglen is a Tibetan word that means "giving and taking," and it is a meditation practice that has been cherished for centuries as a way to awaken the compassionate heart. It is not about fixing or changing anything, but rather about being with what is, with a heart full of love. In Tonglen, we breathe in the suffering of others, their pain, their fear, their loneliness, and we breathe out whatever we feel would bring them peace and healing, love, clarity, or simple comfort. It is a practice of radical empathy, a way of connecting with the shared humanity that unites us all. It is a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles, and that our hearts have an infinite capacity to love.
When we practice Tonglen, we begin to shift our relationship with suffering. Instead of seeing it as something to be avoided, we learn to meet it with an open and loving heart. This can be incredibly healing, both for ourselves and for others. By breathing in the pain of the world, we acknowledge it and honor it, and in doing so, we create a space for it to be held and transformed. And by breathing out love, we send a ripple of healing out into the world, a gentle yet powerful force for good. Tonglen can help to dissolve the barriers that we build around our hearts, opening us to a deeper sense of connection and compassion. It can be a beautiful way to work with difficult emotions, to find strength in vulnerability, and to remember the boundless love that is our true nature.
The beauty of Tonglen is in its simplicity. It can be practiced anywhere, at any time. Here are a few ways to begin:
To deepen your understanding of this practice, I highly recommend Pema Chödrön's book, Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living. It is a beautiful and accessible guide to this deep practice. If you are drawn to explore other practices that cultivate a compassionate heart, you might also find a deep connection with Breathwork, another powerful path to healing and self-discovery.
Remember, my dear one, that your heart is a vessel of infinite love. Be gentle with yourself as you explore this practice, and trust in the power of your own compassionate heart to heal both yourself and the world.
