A gentle pause that invites your soul to rest and renew.

About Paul and his workDear friend, in the midst of our bustling lives and the ceaseless inner chatter, there lies an exquisite practice that invites us to come home to ourselves in the most tender way. Savasana, often called the final relaxation pose in yoga, is more than just a moment to lie down. It is a sacred pause – a beautiful invitation to embrace stillness, to honor the breath, and to sink deeply into the present moment. For many of us seekers on this spiritual path, learning to surrender in Savasana opens up an inner sanctuary where healing naturally unfolds.
Savasana, sometimes known as "corpse pose," might sound a little intimidating at first. But it's actually a loving practice that helps us gently let go – of tension, resistance, and the constant drive to do more. Typically, we lie flat on our backs, arms and legs naturally spread, eyes closed, breathing soft and free. The intention is to completely relax every muscle, allowing the body to release deeply while the mind floats somewhere between wakefulness and restful awareness.
This quiet, restorative stillness is deceptively powerful. It’s not about falling asleep, but about tuning in to the subtle rhythms of your body and breath. In Savasana, you gift yourself the time and space to simply be, no need to fix, change, or control anything. It’s an active surrender that renews your spirit and reconnects you to your inner essence.
When we practice Savasana regularly, we nurture ourselves on many levels. Physically, it calms the nervous system, lowers heart rate, and encourages deep restoration. Emotionally, it allows feelings to surface without judgement, giving your heart the freedom to soften and heal. Spiritually, Savasana invites you to meet yourself with gentle presence and compassion, qualities essential for growth along the path.
I remember often rushing through my days, my mind always spinning with lists and worries. It was only when I committed to a daily Savasana practice that I began to truly feel held by stillness. In that space, the noise quieted, and subtle wisdom would arise. It’s this pause, this sacred rest, that makes all other aspects of our healing work more deep and lasting.
To deepen your experience, you might enjoy the beautifully contemplative book Savasana: Between Breath and Death, which gently explores the deep layers of this simple yet life-changing pose.
Begin by finding a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Lay down on a comfortable surface, perhaps a yoga mat cushioned by a soft blanket beneath you. Allow your feet to fall naturally to the sides, palms resting gently on your belly or by your sides with palms facing up – whatever feels most at ease.
Close your eyes, and start by tuning into your breath. There’s no need to change it; just notice it flowing effortlessly in and out. If your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring your focus back to your breath or your body’s sensations. Let your muscles soften, beginning with your toes and moving the awareness slowly up through your legs, torso, arms, neck, and finally the tiny muscles around your eyes and jaw.
You might find it supportive to use guided audios or gentle music to assist your mind in settling. I recommend the soothing tracks like Deep Relaxation Music for Meditation, which gently cradle you into that sweet stillness.
Stay in Savasana anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, or even longer if your schedule allows. When it’s time to come out, do so slowly and mindfully, wriggle your fingers and toes, stretch your body, and gently roll onto one side before rising to a seated position.
For additional comfort, props like an eye pillow can help block out light and deepen your sense of calm. I often use the Lavender Eye Pillow which adds a touch of aromatherapy and soothing weight to the experience.
If you love exploring healing practices similar to Savasana, you may also find comfort in Ashwagandha, an herb known for its calming and restorative qualities that beautifully complement the rest and renewal you find here.
Sweet soul, remember that this sacred pause isn’t about perfection or necessarily doing it “right.” It’s about showing up with a kind heart, a soft gaze inward, and permission to release. Trust that in this gentle surrender, your body, mind, and spirit are wonderfully supported, lovingly carried back to home base. May Savasana be a tender friend on your healing journey, always waiting for you with open arms and quiet grace.
