About Paul and his work

Dear friend, I want to share something close to my heart: Metta meditation, or loving-kindness meditation. In our often hurried, distracted lives, cultivating genuine warmth and kindness towards ourselves and others can feel like a radical act of healing. This beautiful practice invites you to gently open your heart, embracing both your joys and wounds with compassion. It's a tender journey inward that ripples outward, touching the lives around you with grace.

What It Is

Metta is an ancient Buddhist meditation that centers on generating feelings of loving-kindness and goodwill. Unlike many meditation practices focused on stillness or mindfulness alone, Metta encourages an active cultivation of warmth and friendliness. You begin by silently repeating phrases that express wishes for safety, happiness, health, and ease, first towards yourself, then gradually extending to loved ones, acquaintances, and even those you find challenging.

Here's the thing about Metta: it's not about pretending everything's perfect or forcing yourself to feel warm and fuzzy about everyone. That's not realistic, right? It's more about creating space in your heart for possibility. When you practice loving-kindness, you're basically saying, "I'm willing to soften here. I'm willing to try something different than my usual patterns of judgment or criticism."

The traditional progression moves through five categories: yourself, a loved one, a neutral person (maybe the cashier at the grocery store), someone difficult, and finally all beings everywhere. Think about that. You're literally training your heart to expand, like doing bicep curls but for compassion. Wild, right?

Honestly, I've seen people transform their relationship with themselves through this practice. One client told me she finally stopped being her own worst enemy after six months of Metta. She'd been carrying around this harsh inner voice for decades, and slowly, gently, she learned to speak to herself like she would a dear friend.

How It Supports Your Healing

When life feels heavy or isolating, Metta offers a soft balm, a way to nurture self-acceptance and deepen your connection with others. By deliberately fostering loving thoughts, this practice may support emotional resilience and ease feelings of loneliness or judgment. It invites you to witness difficult emotions with kindness rather than resistance, allowing healing to unfold naturally.

Look, here's what I've noticed in my 30 years of practice: the people who struggle most with self-love often have the biggest hearts for others. They'll give endlessly to friends and family but can't extend that same kindness to themselves. Know what I mean? Metta helps bridge that gap. It's like you're learning a new language, the language of self-compassion.

But here's what's interesting: the healing doesn't just happen inside. When you start treating yourself with kindness, your relationships change. You become less defensive, less reactive. You can listen without immediately planning your rebuttal. You can hold space for someone else's pain without trying to fix it or make it about you. Are you with me?

The research backs this up too. Studies show Metta meditation can reduce symptoms of PTSD, decrease implicit bias, and even increase telomerase activity (that's the stuff that keeps your cells young). Seriously. Your heart literally benefits from practicing loving-kindness. Your nervous system calms down when you stop being at war with yourself.

  • Compassion for self: Metta helps soften the inner critic and cultivate a gentler relationship with yourself.
  • Openness to others: Extending loving-kindness bridges emotional distances and fosters empathy.
  • Peaceful presence: Regular practice may nurture a calmer, more centered mind.
  • Emotional regulation: When difficult feelings arise, you learn to meet them with kindness rather than resistance.
  • Reduced anxiety: The practice naturally counters the stress response that keeps us on edge.

How to Use It

Find a quiet space where you feel comfortable and won't be disturbed. Sit or lie down in a relaxed posture and close your eyes if that feels good. Begin by bringing your attention gently to your breath, allowing yourself to settle.

Then, start repeating silently phrases such as:

  • May I be safe.
  • May I be happy.
  • May I be healthy.
  • May I live with ease.

Feel each phrase as a heartfelt wish for your own well-being. Don't worry if it feels weird at first. Truth is, most of us aren't used to actively wishing ourselves well. Start with just five or ten minutes. When you feel ready, expand this loving intention outward: to someone you love, to a neutral person, to someone you struggle with, and finally to all beings everywhere.

Here's a tip from years of teaching this: if you're having trouble with the traditional phrases, make them your own. Maybe "May I be at peace" feels better than "May I be happy." Maybe you need to say "May I be gentle with myself today" or "May I find my way through this." The words matter less than the intention behind them.

And listen, some days you won't feel it. Some days you'll sit there thinking this is ridiculous. That's okay. You're still planting seeds. Even mechanical loving-kindness creates new neural pathways. But honestly, most people are surprised by how quickly their hearts respond to this practice. There's something about deliberately wishing yourself well that just... works.

To accompany your practice, I often recommend gentle supports like a soothing lavender essential oil to help create a calm atmosphere. You might also find comfort in a high-quality ashwagandha powder, traditionally used for encouraging inner balance. And when your mind wanders, a gentle guided meditation audio can be a warm companion on your path.

For a natural complement to your practice, consider exploring Holy Basil, a revered herb known for its calming and nurturing qualities.

Start small, be patient with yourself, and trust the process. You don't have to love everyone immediately. You don't even have to like yourself every day. But you can practice being willing to soften. You can practice being willing to try.

Remember, dear one, Metta is not about forcing feelings but gently inviting them. Each time you practice, you're planting seeds of kindness that grow with patience and care. Some days those seeds feel like they're just sitting there in the dark soil of your heart. Other days you'll feel the first green shoots of genuine self-love breaking through. Both are perfect.

Trust this tender journey. Your heart knows the way.
