About Paul and his workIn the quiet moments of our lives, when the noise of the world fades away, what do we fill the space with? The ancient yogis and sages discovered a beautiful and powerful answer: Japa. Japa is the meditative practice of repeating a mantra, a sacred sound or phrase, over and over again. It is a form of prayer, a form of focus, and a deep form of healing. It is a way of using the power of sound to purify the mind, open the heart, and connect with the Divine.
In our modern lives, our minds are often scattered, pulled in a thousand different directions. We are constantly bombarded with information, stimulation, and demands on our attention. Japa is a gentle yet powerful antidote to this modern malady. By giving the mind a single point of focus, the mantra, we create a space of stillness and clarity. The repetition of the mantra acts like a current that carries us away from the turbulent waters of our thoughts and into the calm, clear depths of our own being. It is a practice that can transform anxiety into peace, distraction into focus, and a sense of separation into a deep feeling of connection.
The practice of Japa works on many levels. On a psychological level, the repetition of a mantra helps to break the cycle of obsessive thinking. It gives the ‘monkey mind’ a branch to hold onto, allowing it to become calm and focused. As the mind settles, we are able to access deeper states of consciousness, where we can experience a sense of peace and well-being that is not dependent on external circumstances.
On a more subtle, energetic level, each mantra carries a specific vibration or frequency. As we repeat the mantra, we begin to connect with that frequency. The mantra literally changes our vibration, attuning us to the qualities of the mantra itself, qualities like peace, love, compassion, or courage. As Swami Sivananda explains in his classic text, Japa Yoga: A Thorough Treatise on Mantra-Sastra, the mantra is a mystical energy encased in a sound structure. Through repetition, we open up that energy and allow it to permeate our entire being. For a deeper get into the power of mantras, David Frawley's Mantra Yoga and Primal Sound is an invaluable resource.
The practice of Japa is traditionally done with a mala, a string of 108 beads used for counting the repetitions of the mantra. The number 108 is considered sacred in many spiritual traditions. Holding the mala in your right hand, you begin at the bead next to the ‘guru’ bead (the larger bead at the end) and repeat your chosen mantra once for each bead, using your thumb to move from one bead to the next. When you reach the guru bead, you can either stop or reverse direction and continue for another round.
You can choose a mantra that resonates with you. It could be a traditional Sanskrit mantra like ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ or ‘So Hum,’ or it could be a simple affirmation in your own language, such as ‘I am peace’ or ‘I am love.’ The most important thing is that the mantra feels good to you and that you repeat it with sincerity and devotion.
You can practice Japa for a set number of repetitions or for a set period of time. Even 5-10 minutes of Japa each day can have a deep effect on your state of mind. For those looking to explore all kinds of mantras and their applications, Thomas Ashley-Farrand’s Healing Mantras is a wonderful guide.
Japa has been a faithful companion on my spiritual journey for many years. I was first introduced to the practice during a difficult time in my life when my mind was filled with fear and uncertainty. I was given a simple mantra and a mala and was told to repeat the mantra whenever I felt overwhelmed. At first, my mind resisted. It was restless and wanted to be anywhere but in the present moment. But I persisted, and slowly, something began to shift. The mantra became a lifeline, a source of comfort and strength. It was as if the sound of the mantra was clearing away the clouds of my anxiety, revealing the clear blue sky of my own true nature. To this day, Japa is a practice I turn to whenever I need to find my center and reconnect with the source of peace within.
The practice of Japa is a gift you can give to yourself each day. It is a way of tending to your own heart, of soothing your own mind, and of remembering the sacred sound that is always vibrating at the center of your being. So, find a mantra that calls to you, pick up a mala if you feel drawn to it, and begin the beautiful, life-changing journey of Japa. Let the sacred sound carry you home.
