Ho'oponopono

A warm, inviting 1-sentence description for Ho'oponopono.

4 min readBy Paul Wagner

Ho'oponopono is this beautiful Hawaiian practice that's all about cleaning up the messes in our hearts and minds through forgiveness and personal responsibility. Look, I've been working with this practice for years, and honestly? It's one of the most gentle yet powerful ways to heal relationships and release old pain. The name literally means "to make right" or "to correct," and that's exactly what it does, know what I mean?

Here's the thing about ho'oponopono: it's not complicated. At its core, it's a simple four-phrase practice that can shift everything. But don't let that simplicity fool you. This isn't just positive thinking or wishful meditation. It's a complete way of taking responsibility for your experience and cleaning up the energetic debris that keeps you stuck.

What It Is

Traditional ho'oponopono was a family and community practice where everyone would sit in a circle and work through conflicts with the guidance of a kahuna (spiritual leader). They'd talk it out, pray it through, and restore harmony. Beautiful, right?

But here's what's interesting: the modern version we practice today was simplified by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, who worked with the criminally insane at Hawaii State Hospital. He never even met with the patients directly. Instead, he'd review their files and practice ho'oponopono on himself, taking full responsibility for whatever he was seeing in their lives. Think about that. The patients started getting better. Some were released. The whole ward transformed.

Wild, right? But it makes perfect sense when you understand that everything in your experience is connected to something within you. The practice centers on four simple phrases: "I'm sorry," "Please forgive me," "Thank you," and "I love you." That's it. Four phrases that can change everything.

Truth is, you're not just saying these words to the universe or to other people. You're saying them to the divine within yourself, to whatever part of you created or attracted this experience. Are you with me? It's about taking 100% responsibility for your reality, which sounds heavy but is actually incredibly freeing.

How It Supports Your Healing

I've watched ho'oponopono work magic in people's lives, and I've experienced it myself. When you practice this regularly, you start releasing layers of old guilt, resentment, and pain that you didn't even know you were carrying. Seriously.

The beauty is in how it works. Instead of trying to figure out why something happened or who's to blame, you simply acknowledge that somehow, somewhere, you're connected to this situation. Maybe it's through family patterns, past life karma, or just the fact that you're experiencing it right now. Doesn't matter. You take responsibility and ask for it to be cleaned up.

I've seen people heal relationships they thought were hopeless. Chronic health issues start shifting. Money blocks dissolve. Depression lifts. It's not that ho'oponopono is a magic wand, but when you stop fighting reality and start cleaning up your part in it, everything can change.

One of my clients used it with her estranged daughter. She didn't call her daughter or send letters. She just practiced ho'oponopono every day, taking responsibility for whatever was in her that contributed to their separation. Three months later, her daughter called out of the blue, ready to talk. That's how this works.

How to Use It

Start simple. When something bothers you or when you're in conflict or pain, just repeat the four phrases: "I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you." You can say them to God, to the universe, to your higher self, however feels right to you.

Don't overthink what you're sorry for or what needs forgiving. Just let the phrases do their work. I usually suggest people practice for at least five minutes at a time, but honestly? You can do this anywhere, anytime. Stuck in traffic? Ho'oponopono. Upset with your boss? Ho'oponopono. Worried about money? You get the idea.

Here's what I tell people: make it a daily practice, not just an emergency tool. Spend some time each morning cleaning up whatever comes to mind. Old relationships, current situations, family patterns, global events that trigger you. Everything's fair game.

Some folks like to write the phrases in a journal or focus on specific people or situations. Others just let the phrases flow through their minds throughout the day. Find what works for you. The key is consistency and sincerity, not perfection.

Trust me, this practice will surprise you. It's gentle but thorough, simple but deep. Give it a real try for a month and see what shifts in your life. You might just find that taking responsibility for everything becomes the most liberating thing you've ever done.
