EMDR

A warm, inviting 1-sentence description for EMDR.

I have been making my own herbal tinctures for over 20 years. I share these topics as starting points for your own research.

These guides offer ideas for your own research, not a recommendation to use a product or change medical treatment. Paul's coaching focuses on life and spiritual guidance.

About Paul and his work

Look, I'm going to be straight with you about EMDR. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing sounds like some fancy therapy-speak, but honestly? It's one of the most powerful tools I've encountered in my 30 years of healing work. And here's the thing that gets me every time: your brain already knows how to heal itself. EMDR just helps it remember how.

Think about when you dream. Your eyes move back and forth rapidly during REM sleep, right? That's your brain processing the day, filing memories, working through stuff. EMDR basically hijacks that natural process while you're awake. Wild, right?

What It Is

EMDR was discovered almost by accident in the late 1980s by psychologist Francine Shapiro. She was walking through a park, troubled by disturbing thoughts, when she noticed her eyes naturally moving back and forth as she looked around. Suddenly, the emotional charge of those thoughts decreased. That observation became the foundation for what's now considered one of the most effective trauma therapies available.

Here's how it works: You focus on a traumatic memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. Usually that's following a therapist's finger back and forth with your eyes. But it can also be alternating sounds in your ears or even tactile sensations like tapping your knees. The bilateral movement activates both hemispheres of your brain, allowing stuck memories to process and integrate naturally.

Truth is, trauma gets stored differently than regular memories. When something overwhelming happens, your brain can't process it properly. Instead of filing it away as "something that happened in the past," it gets stuck in your nervous system like a broken record. EMDR helps unstick those records.

I've watched clients process decades of stuck pain in just a few sessions. Not erasing the memory, understand. But transforming it from something that hijacks their present into something that belongs clearly in their past. Are you with me?

How It Supports Your Healing

The research on EMDR is solid. We're talking about studies showing it's as effective as prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for PTSD, but often works faster. The World Health Organization, American Psychological Association, and Department of Veterans Affairs all recommend it. That's not nothing.

But beyond the official stamp of approval, here's what I see in my practice: EMDR works on the body level. You know how you can think you've dealt with something, but your body still reacts? Your heart races when you hear a certain song, or you get that sick feeling in your stomach around certain people? That's your nervous system holding onto old stuff.

EMDR helps release those body memories. I've had clients tell me they finally feel like they can breathe fully for the first time in years. Others say it's like a weight lifted off their chest. Some describe feeling more present in their own skin.

Here's what's interesting: EMDR doesn't just work on big trauma. Those smaller wounds from childhood? The criticism, the feeling invisible, the shame that nobody ever directly addressed? EMDR can help with those too. Sometimes the "little" stuff is what really shapes how we see ourselves.

I've seen it help with anxiety, depression, phobias, addiction recovery, even performance blocks for artists and athletes. Because honestly, most of our limitations come from old experiences that taught us we're not safe, not worthy, or not capable. EMDR can help rewrite those core beliefs.

How to Use It

Now, I need to be clear about something: EMDR for serious trauma needs to be done with a trained professional. This isn't DIY territory when you're dealing with significant PTSD or complex trauma. Find someone certified through EMDR International Association. They'll have proper training in how to keep you grounded and safe during processing.

That said, there are some self-help techniques you can try for everyday stress and minor upsets. Getting Past Your Past: Take Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy is written by EMDR's founder and gives you practical tools you can use on your own.

Simple bilateral stimulation can be calming even without formal therapy. Try the butterfly hug: cross your arms over your chest and gently pat alternating sides while breathing slowly. Or listen to bilateral music that alternates between your left and right ear. Some people find walking or swimming helps because of the natural bilateral movement.

But seriously, if you're dealing with real trauma, please work with someone trained. You deserve that level of support. Know what I mean?
