About Paul and his work

Evidence and safety to consider

DMSO is a chemical solvent with a narrow FDA-approved prescription use: clinician-directed bladder instillation for symptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis. Evidence does not establish it as a general wellness supplement or as an effective treatment for pain, circulation, tissue healing, musculoskeletal problems, or osteoarthritis.

DMSO can be absorbed through skin and may alter the effects of other medicines. Reported effects include skin irritation, digestive upset, and garlic-like taste, breath, or body odor; hypersensitivity has occurred. The FDA-approved product is Rx only, used in the bladder, and not for intramuscular or intravenous injection. Its label advises caution in pregnancy and nursing and says safety and effectiveness in children are not established.

Evidence note updated 2026-10-12. See the specific sources below.

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a chemical solvent, not a botanical remedy or a general wellness supplement. It has specific medical and laboratory uses, but personal reports of relief cannot establish that it heals injuries or improves health. This page is for research context rather than self-treatment.

What It Is

DMSO stands for dimethyl sulfoxide. It is a clear, colorless chemical solvent that can be absorbed after skin application. That absorption is a safety concern, not a reason to use it as a delivery system for other products: the prescription label notes that DMSO may alter the effects of medicines taken at the same time. See the FDA prescribing information for Rimso-50.

Its solvent properties are relevant in laboratory and pharmaceutical settings. They do not show that mixing DMSO with nutrients, herbs, or other compounds will place them where a person needs them or improve a health outcome. Mixing products also adds avoidable uncertainty because DMSO can cross the skin.

In the United States, the FDA-approved prescription product Rimso-50 is a sterile 50% DMSO solution for clinician-directed bladder instillation to provide symptomatic relief in interstitial cystitis. It is Rx only; the label says it has not been approved as safe and effective for any other indication. This narrow approval does not establish DMSO as a natural healing tool for other conditions. Read the FDA prescribing information.

What Research Can and Cannot Show

Laboratory findings about antioxidant or anti-inflammatory activity do not establish a treatment benefit in people. They cannot show that DMSO quickly relieves pain, improves circulation, repairs tissue, or helps joint injuries, muscle strains, or chronic conditions.

For osteoarthritis, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says that only a small amount of research has been conducted and that no conclusion can be reached about whether DMSO is helpful. Human clinical evidence does not support presenting DMSO as a whole-body, emotional, or spiritual healing aid. Read NCCIH's DMSO evidence summary.

The FDA-approved prescription use is specific: symptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis with a sterile formulation instilled into the bladder. The product label states that it has not been approved as safe and effective for any other indication. Read the FDA prescribing information.

Research and Safety

This page does not provide topical, oral, mixing, or dosing instructions. DMSO is absorbed through the skin, and the prescription label says it may change the effects of medicines taken at the same time. Treating it as a carrier for homemade blends, herbal extracts, or medicines adds risk without showing that the combination works. See the FDA prescribing information.

The FDA-approved formulation is prescription-only and is placed in the bladder by a clinician for interstitial cystitis; it is not approved for other uses and is explicitly not for intramuscular or intravenous injection. The label lists no known contraindications, yet it reports occasional hypersensitivity with topical administration, advises caution during pregnancy and nursing, and says safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

Digestive and skin reactions were the most commonly reported adverse reactions in a systematic review of 109 human studies. NCCIH also lists skin irritation, digestive upset, and garlic-like taste, breath, or body odor, and notes that DMSO safety remains uncertain because research is limited. Read the systematic review of adverse reactions and NCCIH's safety summary.

For a health concern, research evidence and approved options with a licensed clinician or pharmacist rather than using DMSO in place of evaluation or care.

Questions to guide your research

What is DMSO?

DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, is a chemical solvent. In the United States, prescription Rimso-50 is FDA approved for clinician-directed bladder instillation to provide symptomatic relief for interstitial cystitis. It is not established as a general wellness supplement.

What are the benefits of DMSO?

The FDA-approved prescription use is limited to symptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis. Evidence does not establish DMSO as helpful for osteoarthritis or for general physical, emotional, or spiritual wellbeing.

How do I use DMSO?

This page provides research context, not self-treatment directions. The FDA-labeled product is Rx only and is placed in the bladder by a clinician; it is not an injectable product. Discuss DMSO questions and possible medicine interactions with a licensed clinician or pharmacist.
