A gentle companion on your path to balance and renewal.
I have been making my own herbal tinctures for over 20 years. I share these topics as starting points for your own research.
These guides offer ideas for your own research, not a recommendation to use a product or change medical treatment. Paul's coaching focuses on life and spiritual guidance.
About Paul and his workLook, I've got to be straight with you about something. Bird dog isn't actually an herb. Know what I mean? It's a yoga pose and physical therapy exercise that's been quietly helping people heal for years. But here's the thing... sometimes the most powerful medicine comes from the simplest movements. Are you with me?
I've been working with clients for three decades now, and honestly? The bird dog exercise has shown up in more healing journeys than I can count. It's this beautiful blend of strength and surrender that just makes sense for so many of us dealing with back pain, core weakness, or that scattered feeling when our bodies don't feel like home.
Bird dog is a foundational exercise where you start on your hands and knees, then extend opposite arm and leg simultaneously. Simple, right? But here's what's interesting... this movement isn't just about physical strength. It's about finding your center when everything feels off-balance.
Truth is, I've watched people transform their relationship with their bodies through this one exercise. It teaches you coordination, builds deep core stability, and creates this amazing dialogue between your nervous system and your muscles. Think about that. You're literally training your body to communicate better with itself.
The name comes from hunting dogs who point at game, extending one paw and their tail in perfect alignment. That's exactly what you're doing... finding that sweet spot of extension and stability. Wild, right?
Here's where bird dog gets really interesting for healing work. First off, it's incredible for your core. Not just your abs, but that deep stabilizing system that holds everything together. When your core is strong and responsive, your whole body feels more grounded. More present.
I've seen this exercise help people with chronic low back pain find relief they'd been chasing for years. It strengthens your glutes, improves spinal stability, and teaches your body how to move as one integrated unit instead of a bunch of separate parts fighting each other.
But here's what I find most beautiful about bird dog... it demands presence. You can't do it while your mind is racing elsewhere. You have to be here, now, feeling your way through each movement. It's moving meditation, honestly.
For my sensitive clients, those who feel energy intensely, bird dog creates this amazing sense of being anchored while still being able to reach and expand. It's like learning to be rooted and free at the same time. Seriously.
The breathing that naturally happens during bird dog? That's healing gold right there. Deep, rhythmic breaths that massage your nervous system back toward calm. I've had clients tell me they sleep better after adding bird dog to their routine because their bodies finally remember how to relax.
Starting bird dog is beautifully simple. Get on your hands and knees... hands under shoulders, knees under hips. Think table position. Take a breath and find your center. Feel that?
Now slowly extend your right arm forward while extending your left leg back. Hold for five to ten seconds. Feel the line of energy from your fingertips to your toes. Breathe. Lower down and switch sides. That's it. That's the magic.
Start with five reps each side. Listen to your body, though. Some days you'll want more, some days less. I always tell my clients... your body's wisdom trumps any program every single time.
Here's a progression I love: once basic bird dog feels easy, try closing your eyes. Game changer. Or slow it way down... take twenty seconds to extend, hold for ten, twenty seconds to lower. You'll discover muscles you forgot you had.
For extra support in your practice, these resources might help:
Morning bird dog sets your whole day up differently. There's something about starting with that centered, connected feeling that changes how you move through everything else. Evening bird dog helps discharge the day's stress and tension.
If you're dealing with wrist issues, try it on your forearms instead. Knee problems? Extra padding underneath. The point isn't perfect form... it's finding your way into the movement with kindness and awareness.
Remember, this isn't about performance. It's about coming home to yourself, one mindful movement at a time. Your body knows how to heal. Sometimes it just needs a gentle reminder of what balance feels like.
