Alternate Nostril Breathing

A gentle breath practice to bring balance and calm to your inner world.

4 min readBy Paul Wagner

Here's the thing about alternate nostril breathing: it's one of those practices that sounds simple until you try it and realize just how powerful it really is. I've been working with clients for over 30 years, and honestly? This technique keeps surprising me with how quickly it can shift someone's entire energy.

What It Is

Alternate Nostril Breathing, or Nadi Shodhana in Sanskrit, is basically nature's reset button for your nervous system. You're using your fingers to gently close one nostril at a time while you breathe through the other. Simple, right? But here's what's fascinating: your nostrils naturally alternate dominance throughout the day anyway. We're just making it conscious.

Think about it. Your left nostril connects to the right brain (creativity, intuition, calm), while your right nostril connects to the left brain (logic, analysis, action). When we consciously alternate between them, we're literally balancing these two aspects of ourselves. Know what I mean?

The ancient yogis called the energy channels in your body "nadis." They believed this practice clears blockages in these pathways, allowing life force energy to flow more freely. Whether you buy into the energy stuff or not, the science backs up what happens to your nervous system. And that's pretty cool.

How It Supports Your Healing

Look, I've watched this practice work miracles for people dealing with anxiety, insomnia, and just general life overwhelm. When you're breathing through one nostril at a time, you're activating your parasympathetic nervous system. That's your "rest and digest" mode. Your heart rate slows down. Your mind gets quieter. Stress hormones take a back seat.

But here's what's really interesting: studies show this practice can actually balance blood pressure between the two sides of your body. Wild, right? It also improves concentration and helps regulate your sleep cycles. I've had clients tell me it's like having a mini-vacation without leaving their chair.

Truth is, when life gets chaotic, we tend to breathe shallow and fast. This practice forces you to slow down and breathe deeply. You can't rush it. You can't multitask while you're doing it. It's like meditation disguised as breathwork.

Are you with me? Sometimes the simplest things are the most deep. This isn't about perfection or doing it "right." It's about giving yourself permission to pause and reconnect with your own rhythm.

How to Use It

Okay, let's get practical. Find a comfortable seat where your spine can be straight but not rigid. I always tell people to sit like you're having tea with a dear friend. Relaxed but present.

Bring your right hand to your nose. Use your thumb for your right nostril and your ring finger for your left. (Your index and middle fingers can rest on your forehead or curl into your palm, whatever feels comfortable.) Start by gently closing your right nostril with your thumb and inhaling slowly through your left nostril for about 4 counts.

Now close your left nostril with your ring finger and release your thumb. Exhale through your right nostril for 4 counts. Inhale through that same right nostril. Close it with your thumb again and release your ring finger to exhale through the left. That's one complete cycle.

Start with just 5-10 cycles. Seriously. Don't be a hero on day one. Your nervous system needs time to adjust to this new rhythm. Once you're comfortable, you can work up to 10-20 cycles or about 5-10 minutes total.

Here's a tip I share with all my clients: if you get dizzy, you're probably breathing too forcefully. This should feel like a gentle wave, not a hurricane. If your arm gets tired, take a break. Use a pillow under your elbow for support.

The Pranayama Breathwork Guidebook is fantastic if you want to dive deeper into the technique and learn variations. I recommend it to clients who really want to understand the science and tradition behind what they're doing.

Timing matters too. First thing in the morning is perfect because your mind is still quiet. Before bed works beautifully if you struggle with racing thoughts. Even a few cycles during your lunch break can reset your entire afternoon.

Want to create a little ritual around it? Light some incense or diffuse some calming essential oils. Lavender is my go-to for evening practice, while eucalyptus is energizing for morning sessions.

The Mindful Breathing Bracelet can be a sweet reminder throughout your day to check in with your breath. Not just for formal practice, but those little moments when you notice you're holding tension.

Remember, there's no perfect way to do this. Some days your breath will feel smooth and even. Other days it might feel choppy or uneven. That's okay. That's information about what's happening in your system right now. Trust the process, be gentle with yourself, and let this practice teach you what it wants you to know.
