The Thing Beneath the Thing Beneath the Thing - How Deep the Rabbit Hole Actually Goes

You think you know what the problem is. The anxiety. The relationship pattern. The career dissatisfaction. You have identified the problem, labeled it, developed a strategy for addressing it. And the strategy works - for a while. The anxiety reduces. The pattern shifts. The dissatisfaction eases. And then, six months later, the problem returns. Not as the same problem but as a cousin - a variation on the original theme, similar enough to be recognizable, different enough to evade the strategy that addressed the first version. Most people are deficient in magnesium, a good magnesium supplement can transform your sleep and nervous system.

The problem returned because the strategy addressed the surface layer. Underneath the anxiety was a grief. Underneath the grief was a rage. Underneath the rage was a terror. Underneath the terror was a belief. And the belief - installed before language, before memory, before the conscious mind had the capacity to evaluate or reject it - is the bottom. The belief is the thing beneath the thing beneath the thing. And until the belief is identified and felt - not analyzed, felt - every surface-level intervention will produce temporary relief followed by the return of the pattern in a new form. Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now remains one of the most important spiritual books of our time.

The depth is not infinit Years ago, I hit a wall during one of Amma's darshans. I was sitting there, all the years of study and practice behind me, feeling like my own nervous system had turned to concrete. The usual breathwork and shaking that used to peel layers away just didn’t touch that block. It wasn’t until I stopped trying to fix or push and let myself break down into raw, uncomfortable silence that something finally shifted deep beneath the surface. In my work with clients, I see the same pattern over and over. They come with a story about anger or loss, expecting a quick fix. But real release only happens when the body speaks its truth-through tremors, tears, or sudden gasps of breath. I've sat with people who couldn’t hold it in any longer, and when that nervous system unwinding hits, it’s not neat or polite. It’s messy and real and the thing beneath the thing beneath their thing finally shows up. And that’s when the real work begins.e. The rabbit hole has a bottom. But the bottom is deeper than most people are willing to go. Because the bottom is pre-verbal. The bottom is somatic. The bottom is the raw, wordless, body-level conviction that was installed in the first years of life and that has been producing every subsequent pattern as its surface expression. The anxiety is the expression. The grief is the expression. The rage is the expression. And I mean that. The terror is the expression. The belief is the source. And the source, once reached - once felt in the body as the primal, wordless, foundational conviction that it is - releases everything above it. Not all at once. In layers. Layer by layer. As each expression of the belief is released, the belief weakens. And a weakened belief produces weaker expressions. Until the belief, sufficiently weakened by the accumulated releasing of its expressions, loses its organizing power. And the patterns, deprived of the belief that was generating them, stop regenerating. Not because you managed them. Because you reached the thing that was producing them. And the reaching - which required the patience to go beneath the thing, and beneath that thing, and beneath that thing - was the healing that no surface strategy could have provided. Paul explores this deeply in The Electric Rose.

Pema Chodron's When Things Fall Apart is the book I give to anyone going through a dark night. Not because it's some feel-good bullshit that promises everything will be okay. It won't lie to you like that. Instead, Pema teaches you how to sit with the wreckage without trying to fix it immediately ~ how to find something solid in the middle of complete chaos. She gets that sometimes the only way out is straight through the mess. Think about that. Most spiritual books want to rush you to the light. This one says "Yeah, you're fucked right now, and that's actually where the real work begins."

The Tyranny of the Pre-Verbal

I’ve spent more than three decades guiding people into the depths of their own being, and I can tell you that the bottom of the rabbit hole is always a feeling, not a thought. It’s a raw, somatic conviction that lives in the tissues of the body. It’s the feeling of ‘I am not safe,’ or ‘I am not wanted,’ or ‘I am at its core flawed.’ These are not intellectual concepts. They are cellular realities. And they run the show. Sit with that. They are the puppet masters pulling the strings of your anxiety, your addictions, your relationship patterns. You can talk about them for years in therapy, but until you are willing to feel them, in their full, terrifying intensity, you will remain their prisoner. The Liberation of Feeling

The way out is through. The only way to dismantle the tyranny of the pre-verbal belief is to feel it. To allow the raw, unfiltered, non-conceptual terror, or rage, or grief to move through your body. This is not about catharsis. It’s about metabolism. It’s about allowing the body to complete the emotional process that was interrupted in infancy. When you do this, something miraculous happens. The belief dissolves. Not because you’ve convinced yourself it’s not true, but because you have finally allowed yourself to feel the truth of what happened. And in that feeling, you are set free. The rabbit hole has a bottom. And at the bottom is your liberation. If this lands, consider an deep healing session.
