EMDR Therapy: Rewiring Traumatic Memories

EMDR therapy is a powerful tool for healing trauma by rewiring the brain and releasing trapped energy. This article explores the 8 phases of EMDR from a spiritual perspective.

# EMDR Therapy: Rewiring Traumatic Memories My dearest friends, I am Paul Wagner, and I am so grateful to be with you today. For over 30 years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside countless souls on their journey of healing and self-discovery. Today, I want to talk about a topic that is near and dear to my heart: trauma. And more specifically, a impressive therapy that is helping so many to heal from its grip: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR. ## A Deeper Understanding of Trauma Before we look into the magic of EMDR, let’s first understand what trauma truly is. The great Dr. Gabor Maté, a man whose work I deeply admire, teaches us that trauma is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you. It is the wound that we carry within us, a wound that can shape our lives in deep ways. Dr. Peter Levine, another pioneer in the field of trauma, has shown us through his work with Somatic Experiencing that this wound is not just in our minds, but also in our bodies. Our bodies hold on to the traumatic experiences, and if we don’t allow them to be processed and released, they can manifest as physical and emotional symptoms for years to come. And as the brilliant Dr. Bessel van der Kolk has so powerfully articulated in his book, “The Body Keeps the Score,” our brains and bodies are forever changed by trauma. It’s not something we can simply “get over” with willpower alone. We need tools and practices that can help us to rewire the very fabric of our being. From a spiritual perspective, trauma is a disconnection from our true selves. It’s a forgetting of our inherent wholeness and divinity. The healing journey, then, is a journey of remembrance, a journey of coming home to ourselves. It is a sacred pilgrimage back to the core of our being, where love, light, and peace reside. Trauma creates a veil of illusion, making us believe we are separate, broken, and unworthy. Healing is the process of gently lifting that veil and seeing the truth of who we are.

## EMDR: A Bridge Between Science and Spirit This is where EMDR comes in. It is a powerful and effective therapy that is helping so many to heal from the wounds of trauma. But what is it, exactly? And how does it work? I remember sitting in a session with a client whose body was locked tight with trauma. Years of readings had taught me that the mind alone doesn’t carry these stories — the nervous system holds the scars. I guided their breath, helped them tremble through the tension, and watched the layers start to unravel. That moment, raw and gritty, reminded me why rewiring these wounds is about the body first, not just talk. EMDR is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, typically in the form of guided eye movements, to help the brain process and integrate traumatic memories. It’s a bit like the REM sleep of our dream state, where our eyes move back and forth as we process the day’s events. EMDR helps to kickstart this natural healing process in a safe and guided way. It is a beautiful testament to the fact that our bodies have an innate intelligence and a deep capacity to heal. The therapy is divided into eight phases, each one a sacred step on the path to wholeness: 1. **History and Treatment Planning:** This initial phase is a sacred meeting of two souls. You and your therapist create a safe and trusting container for your healing journey. You share your story, not to dwell in the pain, but to illuminate the path forward. You identify the memories that are ready to be healed, and you set intentions for your transformation. 2. **Preparation:** Here, you gather your tools for the journey. Your therapist will lovingly guide you through practices that will help you to feel safe, grounded, and resourced. You will learn to cultivate a sense of inner stability, a sanctuary within yourself that you can return to at any time. 3. **Assessment:** In this phase, you gently approach the target memory. You identify the negative beliefs that have taken root in your heart, the lies that trauma has told you about yourself. And then, with great love and courage, you choose a new belief, a positive belief that is aligned with your true nature. 4. **Desensitization:** Here's the thing: it's where the alchemy of healing takes place. As you hold the memory in your awareness, you begin the bilateral stimulation. The gentle back-and-forth movement of your eyes creates a bridge between the two hemispheres of your brain, allowing the trapped energy of the trauma to be released. It is a process of deep transformation, as the emotional charge of the memory begins to fade, like a storm cloud giving way to the sun. 5. **Installation:** Now, you invite the new, positive belief to take root in your being. You water it with your attention, you nurture it with your love, and you allow it to grow strong and vibrant within you. That's a process of reclaiming your power and rewriting your story. 6. **Body Scan:** Your body is a wise and faithful messenger. In this phase, you listen to its wisdom. You scan your body for any lingering tension or discomfort, any echoes of the trauma that may still be held within. You breathe into these places with love and compassion, allowing them to soften and release. 7. **Closure:** At the end of each session, you return to your inner sanctuary. Your therapist will guide you through practices that will help you to feel calm, peaceful, and integrated. You leave the session feeling held, supported, and empowered. 8. **Re-evaluation:** That's a time for celebration and reflection. You and your therapist honor the progress you have made. You celebrate your courage, your resilience, and your commitment to your own healing. And you look to the future with hope and excitement, knowing that you are creating a new life for yourself, one that is filled with love, joy, and purpose. What I love about EMDR is that it’s not about re-living the trauma. It’s about reprocessing it. It’s about taking the memory and putting it in its proper place, in the past, so that it no longer has power over you in the present. It is a sacred act of liberation, a freeing of the soul from the chains of the past.

A weighted blanket can feel like a hug from the universe, especially on nights when the mind will not stop. *(paid link)* There's something primal about that gentle pressure. Like being held without having to ask for it. Your nervous system doesn't care if it's cotton and glass beads doing the holding instead of human arms... it just knows it feels safe. And when trauma has your brain spinning at 3 AM, replaying scenes you'd rather forget, that consistent weight can anchor you back to your body. Know what I mean? It's not magic, but damn if it doesn't feel close sometimes.

## The Body as a Sacred Vessel As we’ve learned from Dr. Levine and Dr. van der Kolk, the body is where we store our trauma. It is the vessel that holds our pain, our grief, and our fear. But it is also the vessel that holds our joy, our love, and our wisdom. Our bodies are the sacred temples of our souls, the living altars upon which we experience the fullness of life. EMDR honors the wisdom of the body. It helps us to connect with our physical sensations and to release the trapped energy that is stored within us. It’s a process of coming back into our bodies, of reclaiming them as our sacred home. It is a journey of embodiment, of learning to live in our bodies with love, acceptance, and grace. In my own spiritual practice, I have always taught the importance of embodiment. We are not just spiritual beings having a human experience; we are spiritual beings who are fully and completely human. Our bodies are not separate from our souls; they are the temples of our souls. When we heal our bodies, we heal our souls. When we release the trauma from our bodies, we create space for more love, more joy, and more peace to enter our lives. We become more present, more alive, and more connected to the divine flow of life. ## Compassionate Inquiry: The Path to Self-Love Dr. Gabor Maté’s work on Compassionate Inquiry is a beautiful complement to EMDR. It is a process of asking ourselves, with love and compassion, why we do the things we do. It’s about understanding the root causes of our behaviors and our emotions, which so often stem from our past traumas. I’ve been in those dark nights myself, where the ego dissolves and all the usual tricks fail. One evening after a shaking practice, I felt a collapse followed by a strange steadiness inside my chest — like the nervous system finally saying, “okay, I’m done fighting.” Those moments aren’t neat or pretty. They’re messy, bodily, and real. And they teach you that true healing needs somatic truth, not just intellectual understanding. When we combine the reprocessing power of EMDR with the gentle inquiry of self-compassion, we create a powerful connection for healing. We learn to be with our pain without judgment. We learn to love ourselves, even the parts of us that we have deemed unlovable. What we're looking at is the path to true and lasting healing. It’s not about fixing ourselves, because we are not broken. It’s about loving ourselves back to wholeness.

Rose quartz is the stone of unconditional love, keep one close when you are doing heart work. I'm talking about that soft pink energy that doesn't judge, doesn't push, just holds space. When you're processing trauma, especially the deep stuff that lives in your chest, you need something gentle but steady. Your nervous system is already on high alert. Rose quartz whispers instead of shouting. It reminds your body that love isn't always complicated or conditional ~ sometimes it's just there, patient as hell, waiting for you to remember you're worth healing. Seriously. Keep it in your pocket during sessions or hold it when the memories get too heavy. *(paid link)*

## Rewiring the Brain, Reclaiming the Soul EMDR is not just a psychological process; it’s a neurobiological one. It actually helps to rewire the brain. It creates new neural pathways, new ways of thinking and feeling and being in the world. When we heal from trauma, we are not just changing our minds; we are changing our brains. We are creating a new reality for ourselves, one that is based on love, not fear. From a spiritual perspective, this is a process of reclaiming our souls. It’s about remembering who we truly are, beneath the layers of trauma and conditioning. It’s about coming home to our true nature, which is pure love and light. It is a resurrection of the spirit, a return to the innocence and wonder of our original being. ## A Journey of Healing: Practical Wisdom and Encouragement My dear friends, if you are on a healing journey, I want you to know that you are not alone.
