My dearest friends, my beloved fellow travelers on this beautiful journey of life, I welcome you with all the love in my heart. We are going to explore what it means to transcend the mind and journey beyond the area of thought into the silent, peaceful expanse of pure awareness.
Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now remains one of the most important spiritual books of our time. *(paid link)*
So, if we are not our minds, then who are we? the great question that has echoed through the halls of spiritual inquiry for millennia. And the answer, my friends, is both really simple and infinitely mysterious. You are pure awareness. You are the silent, formless, and eternal consciousness that is the source of all experience. Imagine the sky. Clouds come and go, sometimes white and fluffy, sometimes dark and stormy. But the sky itself remains untouched, unchanged. The clouds are like your thoughts, emotions, and sensations ... they are temporary and fleeting. You are the sky, the vast, open, and silent space in which they arise and pass away. Or think of a movie screen. The movie can be a comedy, a tragedy, or a thriller, but the screen itself remains unstained by the images projected upon it. You are the screen, the pure, empty, and luminous background on which the movie of your life unfolds. What we're looking at is the great teaching of Advaita Vedanta, which tells us that our true Self, our Atman, is one with the ultimate reality, Brahman. It is the same truth that the Buddha pointed to when he spoke of our “original nature,” our inherent purity and enlightenment. It is the “kingdom of heaven within” that Jesus spoke of. It is the silent, still center of our being, the place where all the noise of the world fades away and we are left with the simple, intense, and loving truth of who we are. ## Practical Steps to Go Beyond Thought This all may sound very beautiful, my friends, but you may be wondering, "How do I actually do this? How do I move from being lost in my thoughts to resting in pure awareness?" a wonderful and important question. The journey beyond the mind is not a one-time event, but a gradual unfolding, a practice of returning again and again to the present moment. Here are a few simple yet powerful ways to begin this journey, offered with all my love. **The Art of Observation**Nisargadatta Maharaj's I Am That is one of the most direct and powerful pointers to truth ever recorded. *(paid link)* This guy didn't mess around with flowery spiritual bullshit. He cut straight through the mental noise like a hot knife through butter. When someone asked him a question, he'd look right through their concepts and hit them with reality so hard it could knock the wind out of their seeking. Know what I mean? There's no gentle hand-holding here ~ just pure, uncompromising truth that'll either wake you up or send you running back to your comfort zone. I remember the first time I read his responses to seekers who came loaded with philosophical questions about consciousness and enlightenment. Boom. He'd demolish their entire framework in two sentences. "You are not what you think you are" ~ and then he'd sit there in silence while they tried to rebuild their mental house of cards. The man had zero patience for spiritual tourism. Stay with me here. He was pointing to something so immediate, so obvious, that our complicated minds couldn't even see it.
The first step is to simply become aware of your thoughts without getting caught up in them. That's the practice of mindfulness, of witnessing the mind with a gentle, non-judgmental attention. Instead of being the actor in the drama of your thoughts, you become the audience. You watch them come, you watch them go, without trying to change them or push them away. You simply observe. As you do this, you begin to create a space between you and your thoughts. You start to realize that you are not the thoughts, but the one who is aware of them. This simple shift in perspective is the beginning of true freedom. **The Power of the Present Moment** The mind is always pulling us into the past or the future, but life is only ever happening in this present moment. To come back to the present moment is to come back to yourself. One of the most direct ways to do this is to connect with your breath. Your breath is always with you, always in the now. Simply feel the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves your body. When you find your mind wandering, gently and lovingly guide it back to the breath. You can also anchor yourself in the present moment by connecting with your senses. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, listen to the sound of the birds singing, taste the sweetness of a ripe strawberry. The present moment is your gateway to pure awareness. **Meditation as a Gateway** Meditation is a beautiful and ancient practice for quieting the mind and connecting with the silent space within. There are many forms of meditation, but I will offer you a simple one to begin with. Find a comfortable place to sit, close your eyes, and begin to watch your breath. As thoughts arise, as they surely will, simply label them "thinking" and gently return your attention to your breath. Do not judge yourself for having thoughts. That is what minds do! Simply notice them and return to your anchor. Even a few minutes of this practice each day can begin to create a intense shift in your consciousness.I keep palo santo in every room, it is one of my favorite tools for shifting energy. *(paid link)*
**Inquiry and Self-Reflection** Another powerful practice is to use the mind to transcend itself. What we're looking at is the path of self-inquiry, of asking real questions that point the mind back to its source. The great sage Ramana Maharshi offered the simple yet powerful question, "Who am I?" When a thought or emotion arises, you can ask, "To whom is this thought arising?" The answer, of course, is "to me." And then you ask, "Who am I?" This question cannot be answered by the mind. It is a question that dissolves the mind and leads you into the direct experience of your true nature. It is a journey of love, a journey of self-discovery, a journey home. ## Living from a Place of Pure Awareness As you continue on this journey of transcending the mind, you will begin to notice a beautiful and raw shift in your experience of life. The fruits of this practice are many, and they will ripen in their own time, with love and gentle persistence. You will find a deep and abiding sense of inner peace that is not dependent on external circumstances. The storms of life may still come, but you will have found an anchor in the silent stillness of your own being. Clarity will begin to dawn in your mind. As you are no longer entangled in the web of your thoughts, you will be able to see things as they are, with a fresh and innocent perspective. Decisions will become easier, and you will find yourself guided by an inner wisdom that you may have never known you possessed. Compassion will blossom in your heart, both for yourself and for others. You will see that everyone is on their own journey, doing the best they can with the understanding they have. The judgments of the mind will begin to fall away, replaced by a loving acceptance of all that is. Most more to the point, you will discover a deeper connection to life itself. You will see the sacred in the ordinary, the beauty in the mundane. You will feel a sense of oneness with all of creation, a sense of belonging to something vast and mysterious and beautiful. not a destination to be reached, my friends, but a gradual unfolding, a journey of love and self-discovery that will continue for the rest of your life. Be patient with yourself, be gentle with yourself, and know that you are always held in the loving embrace of the universe.A weighted blanket can feel like a hug from the universe ~ especially on nights when the mind will not stop. *(paid link)* There's something about that gentle pressure that tells your nervous system it's safe to let go. The weight isn't heavy exactly. It's grounding. Like someone's holding space for you while your thoughts run their marathon. I've found it works best when I stop trying to make it work and just let myself sink into that cocoon feeling. Know what I mean? Sometimes the simplest things are the most effective at breaking the cycle of mental noise.
## Your Invitation to Inner Freedom My beloved friends, the journey beyond the mind is the greatest adventure you will ever start upon. It is a journey back to the home of your own heart, a journey to the truth of who you are. It is a journey that is available to each and every one of us, right here, right now, in this very moment. You do not need to go anywhere or become anyone else. You are already whole, you are already complete, you are already free. I invite you, with all the love in my heart, to accept this invitation to inner freedom. I invite you to take one small step today, and another tomorrow. Be gentle with yourself, be patient with yourself, and know that you are not alone. We are all in this together, walking each other home. May you be blessed on your journey, may you find the peace that surpasses all understanding, and may you come to know the boundless love that is your true nature.
