The water molecule in your glass is older than the solar system. Deuterium studies - measurements of the ratio of heavy hydrogen to regular hydrogen in terrestrial water - have shown that between thirty and fifty percent of Earth's water predates the formation of the Sun. The water was present in the interstellar molecular cloud that collapsed to form the solar nebula 4.6 billion years ago. It survived the collapse. It survived the heating of the protoplanetary disk. It survived the violent accretion of the Earth. The water you drink today contains molecules that were drifting through interstellar space before there was a Sun to orbit.
The hydrogen atoms in those water molecules are even older. They are primordial - created in the first few minutes after the Big Bang, thirteen point eight billion years ago, during the epoch of Big Bang nucleosynthesis when the universe was hot enough and dense enough for protons and neutrons to fuse into the lightest elements. The hydrogen in your water glass has existed for the entire history of the cosmos. It is literally as old as time. Stay with me here.It was there for the formation of the first stars. It was there for the formation of the first galaxies. It was there for every event in cosmic history. And it is here now. In your glass. Being consumed by a body that will exist for a fraction of a fraction of the time that the hydrogen has already existed.

The Katha Upanishad declares: the atman is not born, nor does it die. It does not come into being, nor will it come into being. Unborn, eternal, permanent, and primeval, it is not slain when the body is slain. The hydrogen atom demonstrates this teaching at the physical level. The hydrogen was not born when you were born. It will not die when you die. It came into being thirteen point eight billion years ago and it will continue to exist long after your body has returned its borrowed atoms to the environment. The hydrogen is unborn in the sense that it was not created by your existence. It is eternal in the sense that it has existed for the entire history of the cosmos. It is permanent in the sense that the proton at its core has a half-life that exceeds ten to the thirty-fourth years - longer than the current age of the universe by a factor of more than a trillion trillion. Pema Chodron's When Things Fall Apart is the book I give to anyone going through a dark night. *(paid link)* I've bought maybe thirty copies over the years, handed them out l There was a period in my life when I was deep in the throes of a dark night of the soul. I sat cross-legged on the cold floor of a crowded ashram room in Kerala, arms trembling from hours of shaking practice meant to unstick trauma lodged deep in my nervous system. The water Amma blessed me with that day felt like liquid fire and ice, ancient and utterly alive, moving through my veins. In that moment, I wasn’t just drinking water — I was drinking time itself, and it pulled me through the breakdown. One of my clients once came to me crushed by grief, her breath tight like she was drowning on dry land. We didn’t talk much at first. I guided her to surrender into the quaking deep in her belly until the earthiness of her pain got itself moving and the layers began to uncoil. Between shaking and breath, the oldest part of her system - the one connected to the water, to that primordial flow - started whispering. She found herself held by something vast and stubbornly unbroken beneath her suffering, like the molecules in her water glass that survived everything. That steadiness cracked open the cage around her heart.ike fucking aspirin when friends are drowning. Because here's what Pema gets that most spiritual teachers miss ~ she doesn't try to fix you or rush you through the pain. She sits with you in it. Shows you how the falling apart isn't the problem. It's the path. Think about that. Your breakdown isn't breaking you down... it's breaking you open. And that's where Pema's genius lives ~ in understanding that the crack is where the light gets in, but also where the light gets out. She doesn't hand you platitudes about everything happening for a reason. Instead, she teaches you to make friends with groundlessness itself. To find your footing in having no footing. Wild, right? Most of us spend our whole lives trying to build solid ground under our feet, but Pema shows you how to dance on quicksand.
Your Body Is Borrowed Stardust
Your body does not own its atoms. It borrows them. The average atom in your body has been part of your body for less than a year. You are not a fixed collection of matter. You are a pattern - a dynamic, self-maintaining pattern that passes matter through itself the way a whirlpool passes water through itself. The whirlpool is real. The whirlpool has structure and persistence and identity. But the water that constitutes the whirlpool at any given moment is not the same water that constituted it a moment ago. The whirlpool is the pattern. The water is the medium. And the medium flows through the pattern without the pattern being disturbed. Paul explores this deeply in The Electric Rose.
You are the pattern. The atoms are the medium. The stardust flows through you - entering through your food and water, being incorporated into your cells, participating in your metabolic processes, and then leaving through your excretions, your exhalations, your shed skin cells. The atoms that constitute your body right now will be somewhere else in a year - in the soil, in the ocean, in another body, in the atmosphere. And the atoms that will constitute your body in a year are right now somewhere else - in the food you have not yet eaten, the water you have not yet drunk, the air you have not yet breathed. A weighted blanket can feel like a hug from the universe, especially on nights when the mind will not stop. There's something primal about that pressure, like being held by something bigger than your racing thoughts. It's not just the physical weight. It's the reminder that sometimes the simplest interventions work better than all our mental gymnastics. When you're lying there at 2 AM, replaying every stupid thing you said that day, that gentle pressure says: "Stop. Breathe. You're okay." The universe has been holding things together for billions of years. Maybe it knows something about stillness we've forgotten. *(paid link)*
The Vedantic teaching is precise: you are not the body. You are the awareness that the body appears within. The body is the pattern. The atoms are the medium. And the awareness - the consciousness that perceives the body, that knows the body, that is present whether the body's atoms are this year's collection or next year's - the awareness is the permanent element. Not permanent in the way the hydrogen is permanent - the hydrogen is a physical particle with a finite, if enormous, lifetime. Permanent in the way that Brahman is permanent - dimensionally prior to the physical, not subject to the thermodynamic laws that govern the physical, not contingent on the specific atoms that flow through the body the way the whirlpool is not contingent on the specific water molecules that flow through it. You are older than the Sun. Not your body - your body is younger than you are. Your essence. The awareness that is reading these words. The consciousness that was present before this body was assembled and that will be present after this body's atoms return to the cosmic inventory. That awareness is older than the Sun because the awareness is not subject to the solar timeline. The awareness is subject to the timeline of Brahman - which is to say, no timeline at all. The awareness is timeless. And the timelessness, confirmed by the permanence of the hydrogen and the impermanence of the body and the dynamic flow of atoms through the pattern that you call yourself, is the deepest truth that the stardust can teach you: you are not the atoms. You are the awareness in which the atoms appear. And the awareness is not borrowed. Hang on, it gets better. The awareness is not flowing through. The awareness is the ocean. And the atoms - the ancient, primordial, cosmically traveled atoms that constitute your body right now - are the waves. Moving through the ocean. Borrowed for a moment. Returned to the field. While the ocean remains. As it always has. As it always will. Older than the Sun. Older than the stars. Older than the cosmos itself. Because the ocean was here before the cosmos began. And the ocean is you. If this connects, consider an working with Paul directly.
