The speed of light - 299,792,458 meters per second - is presented in physics textbooks as a speed. A very fast speed, but a speed nonetheless. This presentation is misleading.

The speed of light is not a speed in the same sense that the speed of a car or a plane is a speed. The speed of light is a structural constant of spacetime itself.

It is the rate at which causality propagates through the dimensional fabric. It is the maximum rate at which information, influence, or interaction can travel between any two points in the universe.

It is not that light happens to travel at this speed. It is that this speed is the boundary condition of physical reality.
