In 2012, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson - the particle associated with the Higgs field, the invisible energy field that permeates all of space and that gives mass to the fundamental particles that interact with it.

Before the Higgs field was confirmed, the standard model of particle physics had a problem: the equations predicted that the fundamental particles should be massless.

They should travel at the speed of light, like photons. They should not form atoms, molecules, or matter.

The Higgs field solves this problem by providing the mechanism through which massless particles acquire mass.
