Quantum decoherence is the process by which a quantum system in a superposition of states loses its quantum behavior and begins to behave classically. The superposition - the simultaneous existence of multiple possible states - is destroyed by the interaction of the quantum system with its environment. The environment does not measure the system in the formal quantum mechanical sense. The environment entangles with the system, spreading the quantum information across so many environmental degrees of freedom that the superposition becomes effectively undetectable. The system appears to collapse into a single classical state. Not because the superposition was destroyed in principle. Because the superposition was diluted across such a vast number of environmental interactions that it became operationally invisible.

The mystical state is a quantum superposition of consciousness. In samadhi, in satori, in the peak experience, the consciousness exists in a superposition of multiple states simultaneously - the individual and the universal, the finite and the infinite, the ego and the Brahman. The superposition is real. The experience is genuine. And the superposition does not last. The mystical state decoheres. The interaction of the expanded consciousness with the environmental degrees of freedom of the incarnation - the sensory inputs, the social demands, the biological needs, the psychological habits - entangles with the superposition and dilutes it across the vast number of environmental interactions that constitute ordinary life. The mystical state fades. Not because it was illusory. Because it decohered. The way every quantum superposition decoheres in the presence of a sufficiently complex environment.

Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now remains one of the most important spiritual books of our time.

This is the physics of why you cannot maintain the mystical state in ordinary life. The mystical state is a quantum phenomenon. Quantum phenomena decohere in complex environments. Ordinary life is a complex environment. Therefore the mystical state decoheres in ordinary life. The decoherence is not a spiritual failure. It is a physical inevitability. The environment's complexity overwhelms the superposition's coherence. The same physics that makes quantum computers require near-absolute-zero temperatures to maintain coherence makes the mystical state require near-absolute-stillness to maintain coherence. The environment's thermal noise destroys the quantum computer's coherence. The incarnation's environmental noise destroys the mystical state's coherence. Same physics. Same decoherence. Same return to the classical state. Explore more in our hidden knowledge guide.

I always recommend investing in a quality meditation cushion, your body will thank you for it. Look, I've sat on hard floors for years thinking I was being tough or spiritual or whatever. Bad idea. Your hip flexors tighten up, your lower back starts screaming, and suddenly you're spending half your meditation time fighting physical discomfort instead of actually meditating. Seriously. I used to think physical comfort was somehow cheating ~ like real practitioners should be able to transcend bodily needs through sheer willpower. What a load of crap. A decent cushion changes everything. It elevates your pelvis just enough to keep your spine naturally aligned without forcing it. Think about that. You're basically creating optimal conditions for your ne I remember sitting in Amma’s ashram after a long day of darshan, my body trembling from the release work we’d done earlier. The nervous system doesn’t lie. Even after years of practice, those waves of shaking and breath still spill out old tension like a dam breaking, pulling me back from some edge where the mind tries to grasp control. In those moments, the quantum superposition of who I think I am and what I’m actually feeling gets messy and raw. One of my clients once came to me shattered by grief and anger, convinced she’d lost herself forever. We worked with breath and movement until her nervous system softened just enough to hold that chaotic mess without breaking. Watching her shift from rigid mental control into fluid, embodied presence reminded me how quickly the quantum state of mystical openness fragments when the body tightens up, pulling us back into survival and everyday consciousness. It’s never permanent. It’s a constant push and pull between spaciousness and the pull of conditioning.rvous system to settle down instead of constantly firing pain signals up to your brain. It's not about comfort for comfort's sake ~ it's about removing unnecessary obstacles between you and whatever depth you're trying to reach. The body and mind aren't separate systems fighting each other. They're partners in this whole deal.

The Practice of Recoherence

Quantum computers maintain coherence through error correction - active, ongoing processes that detect and correct the decoherence as it occurs. The spiritual practice is consciousness error correction - the active, ongoing process that detects the decoherence of the mystical state and re-establishes the coherence through sustained attention. Each meditation is a recoherence event. Each moment of mindfulness is an error correction. Each act of conscious presence reverses a small amount of the decoherence that the environmental interaction has produced. The practice does not prevent decoherence. The practice corrects for it. Continuously. The way quantum error correction works continuously. Not eliminating the noise. Compensating for it. Maintaining the coherence against the constant decoherence pressure of the complex environment.

The advanced practitioner does not maintain the mystical state permanently. The advanced practitioner decoheres and recoheres so rapidly that the decoherence is imperceptible. The coherence dips and is immediately restored. Stay with me here. The superposition wavers and is immediately re-established. The oscillation between coherence and decoherence is so fast that the practitioner's consciousness appears, from the outside, to be permanently coherent. It is not. It is dynamically coherent - maintained in the coherent state by the continuous, rapid, practiced application of the error correction that the spiritual practice has developed. Paul explores this deeply in The Electric Rose.

Palo santo has been used for centuries to clear negative energy and invite in the sacred. The shamans of South America knew something we're just catching up to ~ that burning this "holy wood" creates an immediate shift in the energetic field around you. Think about that. They didn't need quantum physics to understand that certain rituals help transition consciousness from ordinary states to something more open, more receptive to the mystical. When you light that stick and breathe in the sweet, grounding smoke, you're literally preparing your nervous system for an altered state.

What we're looking at is sahaja samadhi. Not the permanent absence of decoherence. The dynamic correction for decoherence at a rate that exceeds the decoherence rate. The natural state. Which is not natural in the sense of effortless. Natural in the sense of continuously maintained by a practice so deeply integrated that the maintenance does not require conscious effort. The way the heartbeat does not require conscious effort. The way breathing does not require conscious effort. The recoherence becomes autonomic. This is where it gets interesting. The practice becomes the nervous system's background process. And the consciousness, maintained in dynamic coherence by the continuously operating error correction, experiences the sahaja state - the natural state of coherent awareness in the midst of a decohering environment. Not despite the environment. Through the continuous, practiced, dynamically maintained correction for the environment's decoherence pressure. One meditation at a time. One correction at a time. One recoherence at a time. Until the rate of correction exceeds the rate of decoherence. And the consciousness, dynamically maintained in the coherent state, experiences what appears to be permanent coherence. Which is not permanent. Which is sustained. Which is the quantum error correction of the soul. Applied continuously. By the practice. That you are building. Right now. Pema Chodron's When Things Fall Apart is the book I give to anyone going through a dark night. I've bought probably thirty copies over the years and handed them out like spiritual band-aids. The woman gets it ~ she understands that falling apart isn't a bug in the system, it's the whole damn point. When your mystical high crashes and you're back in the shit of ordinary life, that's not failure. That's physics. Think about that. The quantum field always returns to baseline, consciousness always decoheres back to the everyday mess, and Pema sits with you in that wreckage without trying to fix anything.

The Sacred Mundanity

The return to ordinary consciousness is not a failure. It is a feature, not a bug. The mystical state is not meant to be a permanent address. It is a vacation home. A place you visit to remember who you are, so that you can bring that remembrance back into your daily life. The purpose of samadhi is not to escape the world, but to infuse the world with the fragrance of the transcendent. It is to see the Brahman in your morning commute, the satori in washing the dishes, the peak experience in a conversation with your child. That's the real work. Not the dramatic, peak experiences, but the patient, moment-by-moment integration of that expanded awareness into the fabric of your ordinary life. In my 35 years with Amma, the most raw teachings have not come in the moments of ecstatic devotion, but in the quiet, ordinary moments of service. In chopping vegetables, in sweeping the floor, in listening to someone’s story. That's where the superposition becomes real. where the quantum becomes classical without losing its magic. The Practice of Recoherence

If decoherence is the natural process of returning to the ordinary, then the spiritual path is the practice of intentional ‘recoherence.’ It is the daily, deliberate act of re-creating the conditions for the superposition to arise. Here's the thing: it's what meditation is. It is the act of withdrawing your attention from the environmental degrees of freedom ... the sensory inputs, the mental chatter, the emotional storms - and focusing it on the quantum reality of your own being. Each time you sit, you are re-establishing the superposition. You are reminding yourself that you are both the wave and the particle, the individual and the universal. And each time you rise from your cushion, you carry a little more of that quantum reality with you into the classical world. The mystical state may not last. But its effects can be cumulative. With each visit to the vacation home of samadhi, you bring back a little more of its light, its peace, its wisdom. And over time, your ordinary life begins to shine with an amazing light. If this lands, consider an deep healing session.
