You are not a product to be priced. You are a universe to be discovered.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"'My value is inherent and infinite. It does not depend on what I do or what others think.'"
The very concept of “self-worth” is a spiritual sickness. It implies that your value is something that can be measured, that it can go up or down depending on your accomplishments, your possessions, your relationships, or the opinions of others. We live our lives on this insane stock market of the self, constantly trying to increase our value, terrified of a crash. We get the promotion, our stock goes up. We get rejected, it plummets. This is a recipe for a life of perpetual anxiety and exhaustion. You are not a product to be priced. You are not a commodity to be traded. The entire game of self-worth is a lie, a cruel joke played on us by a culture that has forgotten the sacred.
The spiritual path is not about increasing your self-worth; it is about dismantling the entire concept. It is about realizing that your value is not conditional; it is absolute. It is not something you earn; it is something you are. It is inherent, infinite, and unchangeable.
In many spiritual traditions, there is a story of a beggar who spends his entire life sitting on a treasure chest, begging for scraps, completely unaware of the immense wealth that lies just beneath him. This is a metaphor for the human condition. We are all beggars, sitting on the treasure chest of our own divine nature, begging for scraps of validation and approval from the outside world. We look for our value in the fleeting and unreliable world of form, while the infinite jewel of our true Self lies dormant and unrecognized within us.
Advaita Vedanta teaches that this true Self, the *Atman*, is one with Brahman, the ultimate reality. You are not a drop in the ocean; you are the entire ocean in a drop. Your value is not determined by the size or shape of your drop; it is the value of the entire ocean. To realize this is to end the search for value forever. You don’t need to become worthy; you need to realize the worthiness that you already are.
As the Upanishads thunder, “Tat Tvam Asi” – “You are That.” Not, “You will become That,” or “You could be That if you tried harder.” You *are* That, right now, in this very moment.
I once worked with a man who was the CEO of a major corporation. He had everything the world tells us is valuable – money, power, prestige. But he was a nervous wreck, riddled with anxiety and addicted to painkillers. His entire sense of self was tied to his position, to the quarterly earnings report, to the fawning approval of his board of directors. In the same city, there was a janitor who worked in one of his office buildings. This man had nothing. He lived in a tiny apartment and had no savings. But he was one of the most joyful and peaceful people I have ever met. He saw his work not as a demeaning chore, but as an opportunity to create a clean and beautiful space for others. He saw the divine in the scrubbing of a toilet, in the polishing of a floor. He was not looking for his value in his job title or his bank account. He had found it in the simple act of being present and serving with love. Who had more value? The CEO on the verge of a nervous breakdown, or the janitor who was a walking embodiment of peace? The world would say the CEO. The universe would say otherwise.
The Tao Te Ching speaks of the “uncarved block.” This is a symbol of our original nature, our pristine, unconditioned self, before it has been carved up by the expectations of society, by the labels, by the judgments. The uncarved block has no name, no function, no “value” in the conventional sense. And yet, it is from this uncarved block that all things are possible. It is the source of all creativity, all intelligence, all power. To return to the uncarved block is to let go of the need to be someone, to have a value, to fit into a box. It is to embrace the glorious, liberating “uselessness” of your own being. It is to realize that you are valuable not for what you do, but for what you are. You are a unique and unrepeatable manifestation of the Tao, and that is a value that is beyond all measure.
Embodying the teaching of Value is a practice of divesting from the stock market of self-worth. The next time you find yourself seeking validation from someone, just pause. Notice the feeling of neediness, the subtle begging for approval. And then, turn your attention inward. Place your hand on your heart and whisper to yourself, “My value is inherent.” You don’t need to believe it. Just plant the seed. Another powerful practice is to make a list of all the things you believe give you value – your job, your looks, your intelligence, your relationships. Then, one by one, imagine losing them. Feel the fear, the grief, the sense of worthlessness that arises. And then, underneath it all, look for what remains. What is the part of you that is untouched by all of this coming and going? This is a fierce practice, but it is a direct path to the unshakable ground of your own being. You will begin to discover that you are not the labels, not the roles, not the accomplishments. You are the silent, aware space in which they all appear. And that space is infinitely valuable.
When the “Value” card appears, it is a powerful and loving intervention from the universe. You have been caught in the trap of self-worth. You have been measuring your value based on external factors, and it is making you miserable. This card is a call to come home to your inherent, unconditional worth. It is a sign that you are ready to stop begging for scraps of approval and to claim the treasure that lies within you. This card can also indicate that you are in a situation where your value is not being seen or appreciated. It may be a job, a relationship, or a family dynamic. The message is not to try to convince them of your worth, but to stop participating in a game you can never win. Your value is not up for debate. It is a fact. And it is time for you to start living like it.
What are the top three things I base my self-worth on? What would I be without them?
In what ways do I seek validation from others? What am I afraid would happen if I stopped?
What would my life look like if I truly, deeply knew my value was inherent and unconditional?
