The unbreakable power of a broken-open heart.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""My vulnerability is my greatest strength. I stand tall in my authentic power.""
Here's the thing about strength that most people get completely backwards. They think it's about being tough, unyielding, never showing weakness. But I've been doing this work for 30 years, and let me tell you something... real strength? It comes from exactly the opposite place.
The strongest people I know are the ones who can cry. Who can say "I don't know." Who can admit when they're scared. Think about that. It takes massive courage to let someone see your heart when it's breaking, right?
The Taoists understood this perfectly. Water is the softest thing in the world, yet it carves through mountains. It doesn't fight the rock... it flows around it, through it, under it. Eventually, the mountain gives way. That's real power. Fluid. Adaptive. Humble.
I remember this client I had, successful businessman, thought vulnerability was weakness. Wouldn't let anyone see him struggle. Know what happened? He built these massive walls around his heart, and yeah, nothing could hurt him... but nothing could reach him either. His marriage fell apart. His kids barely knew him. All that armor he wore to protect himself? It became his prison.
But here's what's interesting about the Bodhisattva path... these beings who've awakened to their true nature, they don't retreat from suffering. They lean into it. They use their own pain as a bridge to understanding others' pain. Their strength comes from saying "Yes, I hurt too. Yes, I'm scared too. And that's exactly why I can help you."
Truth is, your wounds are your wisdom. Every time you've been broken open, life was teaching you something about resilience. About compassion. About what really matters. You can either let those experiences make you bitter and hard, or you can let them make you soft and wise. Guess which one takes more strength?
Look, I get it. Vulnerability feels dangerous. Someone might reject you. Judge you. Use your openness against you. And honestly? Sometimes they will. But closing your heart to avoid that pain... that's like never leaving your house because you might get hit by a car. You're protecting yourself from living.
Real strength isn't about never falling down. It's about getting back up. It's about letting people see you stumble and still choosing to trust. It's about saying "This hurt me" without making it anyone else's fault. It's about loving with your whole heart even when you know it might break again.
The most powerful healing I've ever witnessed happened when someone finally stopped pretending to be okay and just... fell apart. Right there in my office. Ugly crying, snot running, the whole thing. And you know what? That's when the real work could begin. That's when their true strength showed up. Not the fake strength of keeping it together, but the real strength of letting it fall apart so something new could grow.
Are you with me? Your sensitivity isn't a flaw to fix. Your emotions aren't weaknesses to overcome. They're your superpowers. They're how you connect with other souls. They're how you know when something's wrong and needs your attention. They're how you love deeply and live fully.
The world needs more people willing to be real. To admit when they're struggling. To show up authentically instead of perfectly. Because when you do that... when you stop performing strength and start embodying it... you give everyone around you permission to do the same. Wild, right?
Start small with this one, seriously. Pick one person you trust... maybe a close friend, family member, or therapist. Share something real with them. Not the highlight reel version of your life, but something you're actually struggling with right now. Notice what happens in your body as you speak. Feel that vulnerability? That's your strength awakening.
Try the "soft gaze" practice too. When you're dealing with conflict or challenge, instead of hardening your eyes and jaw, consciously soften them. Breathe into your heart. Ask yourself: "How can I be strong like water here?" Water doesn't fight... it finds the path of least resistance while still moving toward its destination.
Here's something I love doing with clients: the "wounded healer" meditation. Sit quietly and think about your biggest struggle or pain. Instead of pushing it away, place your hand on your heart and say "This pain has taught me compassion." Feel how your suffering connects you to the universal human experience. That's Bodhisattva energy right there.
And practice the phrase "I don't know" this week. When someone asks your opinion on something complex, try responding with genuine uncertainty instead of a quick answer. Feel how much courage it takes to admit you don't have it all figured out. That's authentic power, my friend.
When this card shows up, life's asking you to redefine what strength means. You might be going through something that's testing your old ideas about being tough or having it all together. Honestly? Good. It's time.
This card often appears when you're being called to let your guard down with someone important to you. Maybe you've been trying to handle everything alone, thinking that's what strong people do. But strength isn't about isolation... it's about having the courage to let others support you.
Pay attention to where you're being rigid when you could be flexible. Where you're pushing when you could be flowing. Where you're performing strength when you could be embodying it. The universe is inviting you to discover the power that comes from authentic vulnerability.
This is also a card about healing others through your own healing. Your struggles aren't random... they're preparing you to help someone else who's walking a similar path. Your willingness to be real about your journey becomes medicine for others. That's the Bodhisattva way, and that's true strength.
Where in my life am I confusing hardness with strength?
What would I share if I knew it would help someone else feel less alone?
