The answers you seek are not in the cards; they are in the heart that reads them.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
""I am my own oracle. I trust the wisdom that arises from within.""
We are a culture of outsourcing. We outsource our food production, our childcare, our entertainment, and our spirituality. We look for answers outside of ourselves, in books, in gurus, in workshops, and in spiritual readings. We have become spiritual consumers, shopping for the latest technique, the most accurate psychic, the quickest fix. But a true “Spiritual Reading” is not about getting your fortune told. It is not about abdicating your power to an external authority. It is a sacred conversation, a co-creation between you, the reader, and the vast, intelligent, and benevolent universe. It is a practice of learning to listen to the wisdom that is already within you.
Advaita Vedanta teaches that your true nature is the Self (Atman), which is one with the ultimate reality (Brahman). This Self is the source of all wisdom, all knowledge, and all guidance. The guru, or spiritual teacher, is not someone who gives you answers. The true guru is the one who points you back to the guru in your own heart. The Sanskrit term for this inner guru is *antaryami*, the “inner controller.”The Upanishads, the foundational texts of Vedanta, are a record of the dialogues between students and sages. The sages do not offer simple answers or predictions. They ask questions. They challenge the student’s assumptions. They guide the student on a journey of self-inquiry, a journey that ultimately leads to the realization of their own divine nature.
A spiritual reading, from this perspective, is a form of guided self-inquiry. A good reader is not a fortune-teller; they are a spiritual midwife. They help you to give birth to your own wisdom. They hold up a mirror, allowing you to see your own blind spots, your own limiting beliefs, and your own divine potential. The goal of a spiritual reading is not to become dependent on the reader, but to become your own reader, to learn to access the ever-present guidance of the antaryami.
For thousands of years, Taoists have used the I Ching, or Book of Changes, as a tool for divination. But the Taoist understanding of divination is very different from the Western idea of fortune-telling. The I Ching is not used to predict a fixed future. It is used to understand the energetic dynamics of the present moment. The Taoist sage does not ask, “What will happen?” They ask, “What is the nature of this moment? What is the path of least resistance? What is the most harmonious way to move with the flow of the Tao?”The Tao Te Ching (Chapter 47) says, “Without going outside, you may know the whole world. Without looking through the window, you may see the ways of heaven. The farther you go, the less you know. Thus the sage knows without traveling; He sees without looking; He works without doing.”
A spiritual reading, from a Taoist perspective, is a way of “seeing without looking.” It is a way of accessing a deeper, more intuitive level of knowing. The cards, the runes, the tea leaves, these are not the source of the wisdom. They are simply a tool, a symbolic language that helps to bypass the rational mind and to tap into the wisdom of the Tao. A good reader is someone who is fluent in this language, who can help you to interpret the message that the universe is sending you in this moment.
I once had a client who was at a major crossroads in her life. She had been offered a prestigious job in another city, but she was hesitant to take it. It would mean leaving her family, her friends, and the life she had known. She was paralyzed by indecision. She came to me for a reading, hoping I would tell her what to do.
I laid out the cards, and the message was clear. The cards did not say, “Take the job,” or “Don’t take the job.” They pointed to a deeper issue. They revealed a deep-seated fear of the unknown, a pattern of choosing safety over growth. The reading became a conversation about courage, about trust, and about her relationship with her own intuition. By the end of the session, she still didn’t have a definitive answer. But she had something more important: she had clarity. She saw that the decision was not about the job; it was about her. A few weeks later, she called to tell me that she had turned down the job. But she had also enrolled in a creative writing class, something she had always dreamed of doing but had been too afraid to pursue. The reading didn’t predict her future; it helped her to create it.
This card is an invitation to seek guidance, but to do so with discernment and self-responsibility. It is a call to enter into a sacred conversation with the universe. But never forget that the most important voice in that conversation is your own. The answers you seek are not in the cards; they are in the heart that reads them.
This is a practice to develop your own intuitive abilities, to become your own oracle.
1. **Get a deck of oracle cards.** It doesn’t matter which deck you choose. Find one that speaks to you, that you are drawn to. 2. **Every morning, before you start your day, sit quietly for a few moments.** Take a few deep breaths and ask a simple question. It could be, “What do I need to know today?” or “What is the most important thing for me to focus on today?” 3. **Shuffle the cards and pull one card.** Don’t overthink it. Trust your intuition. 4. **Look at the card.** Notice the image, the colors, the words. What is your immediate, gut-level reaction? What feelings or thoughts does it evoke in you? 5. **Read the description of the card in the guidebook.** See how it resonates with your own intuitive hit. 6. **Throughout the day, keep the message of the card in mind.** Notice how it shows up in your life. Look for synchronicities, for connections, for moments when the wisdom of the card is illuminated by your experience.
This practice is not about fortune-telling. It is about developing a relationship with your own inner wisdom. It is about learning to listen to the subtle, symbolic, and often surprising language of the soul.
When the Spiritual Reading card appears, it is a sign that you are in need of guidance and a new perspective. You may be feeling lost, confused, or at a crossroads. This is a time to seek out a trusted source of wisdom. This could be a professional reader, a wise friend, a spiritual teacher, or your own inner guidance system. The key is to approach this process with an open mind and a humble heart.
This card is also a reminder to trust your own intuition. You are the ultimate authority on your own life. A spiritual reading is not meant to be a passive experience. It is a dialogue. Ask questions. Challenge the answers. Take what resonates and leave the rest. The Spiritual Reading card is an invitation to a deeper conversation with the universe, and with yourself. The universe is always speaking to you. Are you listening?
