The Teaching

We live in a world that is often dark and frightening. We are bombarded with news of war, of violence, of injustice, of suffering. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, to feel helpless, to feel that the darkness is winning. We think we need to do something grand, something heroic, to make a difference. But the spiritual path is a path of small, simple, and consistent acts of light. The instruction to “Light A Candle” is not just a suggestion to create a cozy atmosphere. It is a spiritual practice. It is a declaration of hope. It is a defiant and courageous act of rebellion against the darkness. It is a way of saying, “I will not be overcome. I will be a light.”

The Inner Flame: A Vedantic Perspective

Advaita Vedanta teaches that our true nature is the Self (Atman), which is described as a light, a flame, a spark of the divine. This inner light is never extinguished. It is always present, always shining, even when it is obscured by the clouds of ignorance, of fear, of despair. The spiritual journey is the process of remembering this inner light, of fanning the flame of our own divinity.

The Katha Upanishad says, “The Self, smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest, is hidden in the heart of every creature. The man who is free from desires and free from grief, sees the majesty of the Self by the grace of the Creator.”

To light a candle is a symbolic act of remembering this inner flame. The outer light is a mirror of the inner light. As you watch the flame flicker, you are reminded of the eternal, unchanging light of your own true nature. The candle becomes a focal point for your meditation, a reminder of the presence of the divine, both within and without. It is a simple but deep way of saying, “I am not this darkness. I am the light.”

The Light of the Tao: A Taoist Perspective

In Taoism, light is a symbol of *yang*, the active, creative, and expansive principle of the universe. Darkness is a symbol of *yin*, the receptive, passive, and contractive principle. The goal of Taoist practice is not to eliminate the darkness, but to bring the light and the dark into a state of harmonious balance. The Taoist sage does not fear the darkness; they understand that it is a necessary and valuable part of the whole.

The Tao Te Ching (Chapter 28) says, “Know the white, but keep to the black. Be a pattern for the world. If you are a pattern for the world, the Tao will be strong in you and there will be nothing you can’t do.”

To light a candle, from a Taoist perspective, is to consciously introduce a spark of yang energy into a yin environment. It is an act of balance, of harmony, of gentle and skillful action. The candle does not try to banish the darkness; it simply shines. And in its shining, it transforms the darkness. It creates a space of warmth, of clarity, of peace. To light a candle is to be a sage, to be a pattern for the world. It is to know that even the smallest light can have a deep effect on the whole.

A Real-Life Example: The Power of One

There is a story of a man who was walking on a beach after a storm. The beach was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore and were dying in the sun. The man began to pick up the starfish, one by one, and to throw them back into the ocean. Another man came along and said, “What are you doing? There are thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly make a difference.” The first man picked up another starfish, threw it into the ocean, and said, “I made a difference to that one.”

To light a candle is to be like that man. It is to refuse to be overwhelmed by the vastness of the darkness. It is to insist on the power of one small, simple, and loving act. You may not be able to end all the wars, to heal all the sick, to feed all the hungry. But you can light a candle. You can offer a prayer. You can be a source of light and warmth and hope to the people in your own small corner of the world. And who knows? Your small light, combined with the small light of others, may be enough to illuminate the entire world.

This card is an invitation to be a light in the darkness. It is a call to refuse to succumb to despair, to cynicism, to helplessness. It is a reminder that you have the power to make a difference, not through grand gestures, but through small, simple, and consistent acts of love. The world is dark. Be a light. Light a candle.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

This is a simple but deep practice of candle-gazing meditation, or *trataka*.

1. **Find a quiet and dark space** where you will not be disturbed. 2. **Place a candle on a table** in front of you, at eye level. 3. **Light the candle.** 4. **Sit in a comfortable position** and gaze at the flame. Try not to blink. Let your eyes relax. Let the flame fill your field of vision. 5. **As you gaze at the flame,** let it be a symbol of your own inner light, your own divine Self. See the flame as steady, as bright, as pure. 6. **If your mind wanders,** gently bring it back to the flame. 7. **After a few minutes,** close your eyes. You will see an afterimage of the flame in your mind’s eye. Focus on this inner flame. See it in the center of your chest, in your heart space. 8. **Rest in this inner light** for as long as you like. Feel its warmth, its peace, its power.

This practice is a powerful way to cultivate concentration, to purify the mind, and to connect with your own inner source of light and wisdom. It is a way of remembering that, no matter how dark the world may seem, the light within you can never be extinguished.

When This Card Appears

When This Card Appears

When the Light A Candle card appears, it is a sign that you are in need of hope, of inspiration, of a reminder of the light. You may be going through a dark time, a period of confusion, of grief, of despair. This card is a gentle but firm reminder that the darkness is not all there is. There is a light that never goes out, a flame that can never be extinguished. This is a time to connect with that light, both within and without.

This card can also be a call to be a light for others. There may be someone in your life who is struggling, who is lost in the darkness. You have the ability to be a source of hope, of comfort, of guidance for them. You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t have to fix their problems. You just have to be a light. You just have to light a candle.
