The dance of forgive in the theater of the self.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I release what never truly belonged to me and return to my natural state of love."
Here's the thing about forgiveness... most of us have it completely backwards. We think forgiveness is some noble act we perform for others, like we're being generous with our grace. But honestly? That's not forgiveness. That's just spiritual theater.
Real forgiveness is way more radical than that. It's the recognition that there was never anything to forgive in the first place. Wild, right? I know that sounds impossible when you're sitting with real hurt, real betrayal, real wounds that still ache when the weather changes. But stay with me here.
The ancient texts get this. The Bhagavad Gita talks about seeing the divine in all beings, even the ones who've hurt us. The Tao Te Ching whispers about returning to our original nature, which is naturally forgiving. And Advaita Vedanta? It goes even deeper, pointing to the truth that there's no separate 'you' to be hurt and no separate 'other' to do the hurting.
But here's what's interesting. I'm not asking you to bypass your pain or pretend it doesn't matter. That's spiritual bypassing, and it's garbage. Your hurt is real. Your anger is valid. Your disappointment matters. Feel it all. Honor it all. Let it move through you like weather through an open sky.
What I'm talking about is seeing through the story your mind creates around the pain. You know what I mean? The endless loop of 'they shouldn't have' and 'how could they' and 'I'll never get over this.' That's not the pain itself... that's the story about the pain. And stories can be rewritten.
I've worked with thousands of people over the years, and I've seen this over and over. The people who suffer the most aren't the ones with the biggest wounds. They're the ones holding the tightest to their stories about those wounds. They're the ones who've made their identity out of their hurt.
Look, forgiveness isn't about condoning bad behavior. It's not about becoming a doormat or pretending everything's fine. It's about recognizing that carrying resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick. It literally makes no sense.
But here's the deeper truth. When you really understand forgiveness, you realize it's not something you do... it's something you are. It's your natural state, like breathing or having a heartbeat. You don't have to learn how to forgive any more than you have to learn how to be aware. You just stop blocking it.
Think about that. When you were born, you didn't come into this world carrying grudges from your past life (well, maybe you did, but that's another conversation). You came in fresh, open, ready to love and be loved. That forgiveness is still in you. It's just buried under layers of conditioning and hurt.
The spiritual courage isn't in forcing yourself to forgive. It's in having the guts to feel your pain without making it your identity. It's in choosing love over being right. It's in recognizing that the person who hurt you is probably hurting too, and hurt people hurt people. Are you with me?
This doesn't happen overnight. I'm not suggesting you wave a magic wand and suddenly feel great about everyone who's ever wronged you. That's not realistic, and it's not healthy. What I'm suggesting is that you start small. Start with forgiving yourself for not being perfect. Start with forgiving life for not going according to your plan.
Truth is, the universe doesn't owe you anything. Life doesn't owe you fairness or ease or happiness. But here's the beautiful paradox... when you stop demanding that life be different than it is, when you stop insisting that people be different than they are, something magical happens. You become free.
And freedom? That's what forgiveness really is. It's freedom from the prison of your own resentment. It's freedom to love again, trust again, hope again. It's the recognition that your peace doesn't depend on anyone else's behavior. Seriously.
Okay, let's get practical about this. You can't just think your way into forgiveness... you've got to feel your way there.
Start with your body. Right now, bring to mind someone or something you're struggling to forgive. Notice what happens in your body. Where do you feel the tension? Your jaw? Your shoulders? Your stomach? Don't try to change it. Just notice it. This is where your unforgiveness lives.
Now breathe into those tight spots. Not to fix them, but to acknowledge them. Say quietly, 'I see you. I feel you. You're allowed to be here.' Give your anger permission to exist without having to act on it.
Here's a practice I've been teaching for years. Every morning, look in the mirror and say, 'I forgive you for not being perfect.' Mean it. Do this for a week and watch what shifts. You can't give others what you won't give yourself.
When you're ready, try this with others. Start small... forgive the person who cut you off in traffic, forgive your friend for being late, forgive your partner for leaving dishes in the sink. Practice forgiveness like you'd practice piano scales. Build that muscle.
And here's the big one. At night, before you sleep, place your hand on your heart and ask, 'What am I ready to release today?' Don't force an answer. Just listen. Your heart knows what you're ready to let go of.
Remember, forgiveness isn't a one-time event. It's a practice. Some days you'll feel generous and open. Other days you'll want to throttle someone. Both are okay. The practice is coming back to your heart over and over again, choosing love over being right, choosing peace over being perfect.
When Forgive appears in your reading, it's time for some serious heart work. This card isn't showing up to make you feel guilty about holding grudges... it's showing up because you're ready for freedom.
Something in your life needs to be released. Maybe it's an old hurt you've been carrying like a badge of honor. Maybe it's anger at yourself for choices you can't change. Maybe it's resentment toward life itself for not turning out the way you planned. Whatever it is, this card is saying you're strong enough now to let it go.
This isn't about becoming a pushover or pretending everything's fine. It's about recognizing that your peace is more important than your grievances. You're being called to choose love over being right, freedom over familiar pain.
If you've been waiting for an apology that may never come, this card is your permission slip to stop waiting. Your healing doesn't depend on anyone else's behavior. Your peace doesn't require their participation.
Look for the gift in this situation. I know that sounds crazy when you're hurting, but there's always something to be learned, some way you've grown stronger or wiser or more compassionate. Find that gift. Honor it. Let it transform your pain into wisdom.
This card often appears when you're on the verge of a major breakthrough. The thing you're being asked to forgive is the last obstacle between you and your next level of freedom. Trust the process. Trust your heart. Trust that you're ready for this liberation.
