Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.
By Paul Wagner
Affirmation
"I am the space between stimulus and response. I choose to respond with consciousness and love."
Life is a constant stream of stimuli. The phone rings. The baby cries. Your boss sends a passive-aggressive email. Your partner says something that pushes your buttons. In every moment, you are being presented with a stimulus. And in every moment, you have a choice. You can either react or you can respond.
A reaction is unconscious. It’s a knee-jerk, automatic, and often negative pattern of behavior that is triggered by a stimulus. It’s the product of your conditioning, your past experiences, and your ego’s need to be right. When you react, you are a puppet on a string. You are giving your power away to the stimulus.
A response, on the other hand, is conscious. It’s a choice that you make from a place of awareness, wisdom, and love. It’s the ability to pause, to take a breath, and to choose a response that is in alignment with your highest self. When you respond, you are the master of your own inner world.
The entire Buddhist path can be summed up as the practice of learning to respond instead of react. Through the practice of mindfulness, we learn to observe our thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. We learn to create a space between stimulus and response. In that space, we find our freedom.
As the Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön says, “The most fundamental aggression to ourselves, the most fundamental harm we can do to ourselves, is to remain ignorant by not having the courage and the respect to look at ourselves honestly and gently.” When we react, we are being aggressive to ourselves. We are perpetuating our own suffering. When we respond, we are being kind to ourselves. We are choosing a path of peace.
Imagine you are driving to an important meeting and you get stuck in a massive traffic jam. The stimulus is the traffic jam. The reaction is to get angry, to honk your horn, to curse at the other drivers. This reaction does nothing to change the situation. It only creates more stress and suffering for you and for those around you.
The response is to take a deep breath, to accept the situation as it is, and to make a conscious choice about how you want to respond. You could use the time to listen to a podcast, to call a friend, or to simply be present with your own breath. You could even use the time to practice compassion for all the other people who are also stuck in the traffic jam. The choice is yours.
Embodying this teaching is about cultivating the habit of pausing before you act. Here are some practices to help you move from reaction to response:
When the Reaction card appears in a reading, it is a powerful reminder to be mindful of your automatic patterns of behavior. It is a sign that you may be caught in a cycle of unconscious reactivity, and that it is time to reclaim your power. This card is asking you to pause, to take a breath, and to choose a more conscious and loving response. It is an invitation to step out of the role of the victim and into the role of the creator.
