The Teaching

The mind is the most powerful, and the most dangerous, tool you possess. It can be a bridge to the divine, or a prison of your own making. It can create heavens and it can create hells. The ‘Magic Mind’ is the mind that has been awakened to its own creative power. It is the mind that understands that reality is not something that happens to you, but something that happens through you. This is not the simplistic, ego-driven ‘law of attraction’ that tells you that you can have a new car if you just think about it hard enough. This is a much deeper, more deep magic. It is the magic of aligning your mind with the mind of the universe, with the creative intelligence that is dreaming this world into being.

The Tao of the Empty Mind

The Tao Te Ching has a deep reverence for the power of the mind, but it is a power that is found not in thinking, but in not-thinking. Chapter 16 says, “Empty your mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return.” The magic of the Taoist mind is the magic of emptiness. When the mind is still, when it is free from the constant chatter of the ego, it becomes a clear mirror, reflecting the wisdom of the Tao. It is in this state of ‘no-mind’ (wu-hsin) that true creativity, true intuition, and true magic arise. The sage does not try to manipulate reality with his thoughts. He empties his mind, and allows the Tao to act through him.

“The five colors blind the eye. The five tones deafen the ear. The five flavors dull the taste. Racing and hunting madden the mind. Precious things lead one astray. Therefore the sage is guided by what he feels and not by what he sees. He lets go of that and chooses this.” - Tao Te Ching, Chapter 12

This verse is a powerful critique of the mind that is constantly seeking stimulation, the mind that is addicted to the drama of the world. The magic mind is the mind that has turned inward, the mind that is guided by the subtle wisdom of the body and the heart, rather than the noisy demands of the senses.

Advaita Vedanta: The Mind as an Illusion

From the perspective of Advaita Vedanta, the mind is both the problem and the solution. The mind, in its un-inspected state, is the creator of the illusion of separation, the illusion of the ego. It is the mind that says “I am this body, I am this personality, I am separate from the world.” But it is also the mind that, when turned inward, can be used to deconstruct this illusion. The practice of self-inquiry (atma-vichara) is the practice of using the mind to question the mind. By repeatedly asking the question “Who am I?”, the mind begins to unravel its own assumptions, its own beliefs, its own limitations. The ultimate magic of the mind, in the Vedantic view, is the magic of self-realization, the moment when the mind recognizes its own source, which is the pure, undivided consciousness of the Self. In that moment, the mind as a separate entity dissolves, like a river merging with the ocean.

A Real-Life Scenario: The Placebo Effect

The placebo effect is one of the most well-documented, and most mysterious, phenomena in modern medicine. It is the simple fact that if you believe a sugar pill is a powerful drug, it can have the same effect as the drug itself. This is a stunning demonstration of the magic of the mind. It shows us that our beliefs have a direct and measurable impact on our physical reality. I once knew a woman who was suffering from chronic pain. She had tried every treatment available, with little success. She was at her wit’s end. She heard about a new experimental drug, and she managed to get into the clinical trial. She was given a pill, and within a few days, her pain had vanished. She was ecstatic. A few weeks later, she was told that she had been in the placebo group. She had been taking a sugar pill. At first, she was devastated. But then, she had a deep realization: if her mind was powerful enough to heal her pain with a sugar pill, then her mind was powerful enough to heal her pain, period. She began to explore the world of mind-body medicine, of meditation, of visualization. She became the master of her own inner pharmacy. She had discovered the magic of her own mind.

The Siddhis: The Magical Powers of the Yogis

In the yogic tradition, there is a whole science of the siddhis, the supernatural powers that are said to arise as a result of advanced spiritual practice. These powers include things like levitation, invisibility, and the ability to manifest objects out of thin air. While these powers may seem like the stuff of fantasy, they are seen in the yogic tradition as a natural byproduct of a mind that has become completely one-pointed and aligned with the divine will. The great yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, in his book “Autobiography of a Yogi,” describes many instances of these magical powers. But he is also very clear that the pursuit of these powers for their own sake is a dangerous trap. The true purpose of the magic mind is not to perform parlor tricks, but to realize its own oneness with God.

How to Embody This Teaching

How to Embody This Teaching

Embodying the magic of the mind is a practice of both discipline and surrender. The discipline comes in learning to quiet the mind, to free it from its habitual patterns of negativity and distraction. This is the work of meditation. Whether you practice mindfulness, mantra, or self-inquiry, the goal is the same: to become the master of your own mind, rather than its slave. The surrender comes in learning to trust the wisdom that arises from that place of stillness. It is the practice of listening to your intuition, of following your creative impulses, of allowing yourself to be guided by a power that is greater than your own ego. A simple practice to begin to cultivate the magic mind is the practice of visualization. Take a few minutes each day to close your eyes and to vividly imagine the life you want to create. Feel the feelings of joy, of love, of abundance as if they are already here. This is not about trying to force reality to conform to your will. It is about aligning your mind with the frequency of your desires, and then letting go, trusting that the universe will handle the details.

When This Card Appears

When This Card Appears

When the ‘Magic Mind’ card appears in a reading, it is a powerful affirmation of your own creative power. It is a sign that you are in a potent period of manifestation, and that your thoughts are having a direct and immediate impact on your reality. This is a time to be extremely mindful of where you are placing your attention. Are you focusing on what you want, or on what you don’t want? Are you dwelling in thoughts of lack and limitation, or in thoughts of abundance and possibility? This card is a call to step into your power as a conscious creator. It is a reminder that you are not a victim of circumstances, but the artist of your own life. This is a time to dream big, to clarify your intentions, and to use the magic of your mind to co-create a reality that is in alignment with your deepest desires and your highest good.

Journaling Prompts

1

If I truly believed that my thoughts create my reality, what would I think differently?

2

What are the limiting beliefs that are currently shaping my experience of the world? Where did they come from?

3

If I could wave a magic wand and create any reality I wanted, what would it look like? What is one small step I can take today to begin to align my mind with that reality?
