The Teaching

You know that moment when everything suddenly clicks into place? When the fog lifts and you can see the situation for what it really is? That's discernment working through you. And honestly, it's one of the most valuable gifts we can develop.

Here's the thing: we live in a world that's constantly trying to pull our attention in a thousand different directions. Social media, opinions, advice from well-meaning friends, our own fears and desires... it's like trying to hear a whisper in a thunderstorm. But discernment? That's your inner compass that cuts through all the noise.

In the Sanskrit tradition, they call this viveka. It's the ability to distinguish between what's real and what's just appearance. Think about that. How often do we react to what we think is happening rather than what's actually happening? I've seen it in thousands of readings over the years. People get caught up in stories, in projections, in assumptions. But when true discernment kicks in, everything shifts.

The Buddhists talk about prajna, which is this penetrating wisdom that sees through illusion. It's not intellectual knowledge, you know what I mean? It's deeper than that. It's like having X-ray vision for truth. You start to sense when someone's being genuine versus when they're performing. You feel the difference between your intuition and your anxiety. Wild, right?

Look, I've learned that discernment isn't about becoming judgmental or critical. That's actually the opposite. When you're truly discerning, you become more compassionate because you can see past people's masks to what's really driving them. You understand that most behavior comes from pain or fear, not malice.

The Tao Te Ching puts it beautifully: "The sage does not attempt anything very big, and thus achieves greatness." Discernment teaches us to pay attention to the subtle, the quiet, the seemingly small. Because that's often where truth lives. Not in the loud, flashy stuff that demands our attention.

Truth is, developing discernment is like strengthening a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. And it starts with getting quiet enough to hear your own inner wisdom. Are you with me? In our culture, we're taught to look outside ourselves for answers. But real discernment comes from within.

I remember working with a client who was torn between two job offers. On paper, one was clearly "better" – more money, more prestige. But when we sat quietly and she tuned into her body's wisdom, she felt constriction around that option. The other job, which seemed less impressive, made her whole system relax and open. She trusted that inner knowing, took the "lesser" job, and it led to the most fulfilling decade of her career.

But here's what's interesting: discernment isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it shows us things we'd rather not see. Maybe we realize a relationship isn't serving us. Maybe we see our own patterns of self-sabotage. Maybe we recognize that we've been living someone else's dream instead of our own. Honestly, that can be tough.

The Advaita tradition teaches that discernment is ultimately about recognizing what's eternal versus what's temporary. What part of your experience is just passing through, and what part is the unchanging awareness that witnesses it all? This isn't abstract philosophy. This is practical wisdom for daily life.

When you can discern between your thoughts and the awareness that observes those thoughts, everything changes. Suddenly you're not at the mercy of every mental storm that blows through. You have space. You have choice. You have peace.

Seriously, discernment is what allows us to respond instead of react. It's what helps us see through manipulation, whether from others or from our own ego. It's what guides us toward what truly nourishes our soul versus what just feeds our addiction to drama or comfort.

How to Embody This Teaching

Want to strengthen your discernment? Start with your body. I'm serious about this. Your body is constantly giving you information that your mind might miss or override. Before making any decision, big or small, take three deep breaths and check in with your physical sensations.

Here's what I do, and I teach this to all my clients: When you're considering an option, imagine saying yes to it. Really feel into that choice. Does your chest open or contract? Do your shoulders relax or tense up? Does your breathing deepen or become shallow? Your body knows before your mind figures it out.

Try this simple practice daily: Before checking your phone in the morning, sit quietly for just two minutes. Ask yourself, "What does my inner wisdom want me to know today?" Don't force an answer. Just listen. You might get words, images, feelings, or just a sense of direction. Trust whatever comes.

Another powerful practice is what I call the "pause principle." When someone asks something of you, instead of automatically saying yes or no, say "Let me think about that." Give yourself space to feel into the request. Does it align with your values? Does it energize you or drain you just thinking about it?

Pay attention to the quality of your thoughts too. Discernment helps you notice the difference between thoughts that come from fear (usually urgent, dramatic, worst-case scenarios) and thoughts that come from wisdom (usually quieter, steadier, more neutral). Fear thoughts push you around. Wisdom thoughts guide you gently.

Practice this with small decisions first. Which route to take home. What to have for lunch. Which friend to call. Feel into each option and notice which one feels more aligned, more spacious, more right. As you build this muscle with little choices, you'll trust it more with bigger ones.

When This Card Appears

When Discernment shows up in your reading, it's time to step back and see the bigger picture. Something in your life needs the clear light of wisdom right now. Maybe you're caught up in drama or confusion, and this card is reminding you that you already know the truth. You just need to get quiet enough to hear it.

This card often appears when you're at a crossroads or facing a decision. It's saying: don't let others' opinions or expectations cloud your judgment. Don't let fear or desire pull you off center. What does your deepest knowing tell you? That's your answer.

Look, if you've been getting mixed signals from a situation or person, Discernment is asking you to trust your gut. That uncomfortable feeling you've been trying to rationalize away? Pay attention to it. That sense of excitement you feel about a certain path, even though it seems risky? Honor it.

Sometimes this card shows up as a heads-up. It might be saying there's more to a situation than meets the eye. Someone might not be showing you their whole truth, or you might be seeing what you want to see instead of what's actually there. Time to take off the rose-colored glasses and see clearly.

This is also a card of spiritual maturity. It's acknowledging that you've developed the wisdom to work through complexity with grace. You don't need to be rescued or have all the answers spelled out for you. You have an inner compass that works. Trust it.
