If you’ve done any research on health foods before, you’ve probably run into the term “antioxidant.” Blueberries are good for you because they’re a powerful antioxidant, and broccoli is a good source of antioxidants. But what would you say if we told you one of the best sources of antioxidants is hidden within your very cells?
Glutathione is a natural substance present in nearly all your cells, and it can play a powerful role in unlocking your health potential. Read on to learn more about glutathione and the benefits it can provide for your body.
What Is Glutathione?
Before we dive into all the benefits glutathione can provide, let’s talk some about what it is. Glutathione is a natural substance found in nearly every cell of your body. It’s made of three different amino acids and plays a number of important roles in the basic functioning of your body.
Among other things, glutathione helps to create your DNA, the building blocks that make up your body. It helps to support your immune system, transports mercury out of your brain, helps to get rid of old cells, and helps certain enzymes do their job in your body. Glutathione also regenerates vitamins C and E in your body and helps your liver and gall bladder do their jobs.
Strong Antioxidant
One of the biggest health benefits of glutathione is that it’s a powerful antioxidant. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can cause damage to some of the cells in your body. Oftentimes, free radicals can be connected with the symptoms of aging, including wrinkles, dry skin, and so on, as well as with some diseases.
Antioxidants help to trap and neutralize those unstable atoms, keeping you healthier for longer. Because glutathione is present in nearly every cell in your body, it can be a powerful antioxidant. Increasing your glutathione levels can provide full-body health benefits, including helping you look and feel younger.
Combats Cancer
Another promising effect of glutathione is that it may help to slow the progression of cancer. Some preliminary studies show that having more glutathione can reduce oxidative stress, one of the conditions under which cancer thrives. These studies also show that glutathione may make the body less responsive to chemotherapy, and more research is needed to determine the true benefits in this area.
It is important to note that, while glutathione can help to slow some of the progression of cancer, it is not a cancer cure. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with cancer, you should not stop the treatments your doctor has prescribed. Instead, talk to your healthcare team about if glutathione supplements could be a good addition to your treatment plan.
Reduces Liver Damage
There are a number of conditions, including alcohol abuse, fatty liver disease, and hepatitis, that damage the cells of the liver. With enough time and enough damage, your liver may begin to shut down altogether. In some cases, researchers believe glutathione may be able to reduce damage to the cells in your liver.
Glutathione’s antioxidant properties can help it to keep your liver cells healthier even as you’re battling some of this conditions. However, research so far shows that this benefit does not extend to damage done by alcohol abuse. If you or a loved one are fighting alcohol addiction, it’s important to reach out for help.
Improves Insulin Sensitivity
Insulin resistance happens when your body processes so much sugar that your insulin becomes less effective. Your blood sugar levels can go up and, over time, you may develop type 2 diabetes if you don’t have a significant lifestyle change. An estimated 96 million Americans – about 1 in 3 people – has prediabetes.
Glutathione could help to improve your insulin sensitivity and lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Some studies have shown that people with insulin resistance tend to have lower levels of glutathione. Raising your glutathione levels may help your body to better process that sugar and keep you healthy and diabetes-free.
Reduces Parkinson’s Symptoms
Parkinson’s disease is a devastating neurological disease that causes difficulty with walking, balance, and even talking. Over time, it can leave people bedridden, trapped by their own shaking, stiff limbs. Some preliminary studies show that glutathione may help to ease some of the symptoms of this disease.
As with many other diseases, oxidation due to free radicals can be a contributing factor in the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Raising glutathione levels can reduce some of this free radical damage, slowing down the rate at which symptoms get worse. This is by no means a cure, but it can be an effective management strategy for patients living with this disease.
Reduces UC Damage
Ulcerative colitis, or UC, is a chronic bowel disease that causes inflammation and discomfort in the digestive tract. It can cause rectal bleeding, bloody diarrhea, cramps, and pain, as well as putting the patient at higher risk for colon cancer. This condition has no cure and can have a serious impact on the patient’s quality of life.
At this point, you may not be surprised to learn that one of the biggest causes of UC is – say it with me – oxidation. As with many of these conditions, the antioxidant properties of glutathione can help to fight the free radicals that cause this oxidation. This can be a good addition to your normal UC management plan.
How to Use It
There are several ways you can incorporate glutathione into your healthcare routine. Our favorite method is to open a 500 mg capsule of this supplement and pour it under your tongue. Add a teaspoon of honey and wait for the powder to dissolve before swallowing it along with 4000 mg of vitamin C.
You can also find glutathione supplements that help your body to produce more of its own glutathione naturally. Milk thistle, flaxseed, and whey all promote glutathione production, as does guso seaweed. You can also eat foods that are high in sulfur to raise your glutathione levels, including garlic, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, legumes, nuts, and eggs.
Safe Use
It’s important to note that, as with any supplement, you need to talk to your doctor before you begin taking glutathione. Certain supplements can interfere with some medications, and your particular health needs are different from anyone else’s. Your doctor can advise you on the safest and healthiest way to incorporate glutathione into your routine.
In general, glutathione is very safe to use. Some patients experience cramping and bloating, and others develop a rash because of an allergic reaction to the supplement. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking glutathione and contact your doctor immediately.
