Have you ever wished that there was some scientific evidence you could point to that would prove how profound an effect our faith has on our physical bodies and mental health? Or maybe you’re hoping to prove that a divine presence doesn’t exist, so you’re looking for studies that assess the mind’s ability to create illusions and imagine spirituality.

If the new field of neurotheology has taught us anything so far, it’s that you won’t find the dismissal of a divine presence here. In fact, scientists seriously following these studies are calling for open-mindedness about how impactful religion and faith practices can be for our minds, bodies, and spirits.

Neurotheology evidence is being compiled using brain scans and vital monitors to show the differences in anatomy and brain activity between religious and non-religious people and how increased religious practice can improve our brain function over time! That’s not to dismiss other effects, either, regarding how faithful devotion to a God and rituals can change our hearts and spirits.

What is Neurotheology?

In simple terms, neurotheology is a subsection of neurology that focuses on the impact of religious practices on people. Scientists in this field wish to understand the relation between religion and the brain.

Neurotheology is a new field, and there is friction for many reasons. To begin, scientific and religious leaders have never been at greater odds with each other–the political divide, sweeping generalizations, and the creeping hatred taking over many hearts have set those with religious views against those who glorify science. While there’s no reason at all that science and religion should clash, it can be challenging to move past differences and assumptions born out of these challenges.

At the same time, there is a divide even within science itself. A common misunderstanding of neurotheology has caused miscommunications and incorrect attributions to the term. At first glance, many might think the field is a religious take on neurology. Leading neurotheologists are working to define and refine the word so it is only applied to truly neurotheological studies.

While the field of neurotheology is still young, the studies have shown amazing and promising results so far. Evidence for religious practice changing our brain function, for instance, spans across religions and demographics, even in some cases to help those who suffer from brain disorders!

Leading Neurotheology Studies

Dr. Andrew Newberg is one of the leading scientists who has paved the way for neurotheology. He has even authored a book called Principles of Neurotheology in which he has sought to set the story straight about the field and its potential. His work has mainly focused on brain scans to show brain function differences across religious and non-religious practices and their effects over time.

In one of his most fascinating studies, Dr. Newberg started with a group of older adults experiencing memory difficulties and taught them a meditation mantra. Over 8 weeks using meditation for only a few minutes per day, that group of elders was able to reshape their brains and improve their memory! The most compelling finding from this neurotheology study is that we no longer have to rely on subjective reports from the study participants but can confirm with scientific evidence that the memory areas of their brains improved function.

Dr. Newberg explained that this improved function at about 10 to 15% was achieved only after two months. You can only imagine the effects this same study would have over years to mimic those who are religious for their entire lives.

Beyond basic brain function, many neurotheology studies have linked religious practices and spirituality to improved mental health. Lower rates of suicide, depression, and anxiety have been found in people who use their faith practices as a form of coping with stress and understanding the world around them. Scientists delving into these studies have linked these mental health improvements with the physical practices that most religions promote, such as participating in the community, avoiding bad habits, and even better dietary choices like meat avoidance.

But that’s not the end of it! While many would seek to explain away the effects of spirituality on the brain by using the excuses above, neurotheology experts like Dr. Newberg emphasize that spirituality itself changes the way the brain functions beyond just improved memory. In fact, meditation and prayer can increase the effectiveness of the brain’s ability to modulate emotional responses and the release of hormones like serotonin and dopamine.

Finally, religious therapies have even been proven to improve symptoms for those who suffer from ADHD, Alzheimer’s, and epilepsy.

Philosophical Angles of Neurotheology

Aside from trials and experiments, several sects of neurotheology are approaching the field from a philosophical angle. Some scientists are claiming that there must be a spiritual predisposition of the brain or human genetic makeup if religious practices change the function of the brain so drastically. Taking it further, some are working to apply quantifiable measures to a person’s spirituality.

Opposers question whether the two fields–neurology and spirituality–could ever be empirically linked beyond how some rituals train our brains to work differently. Some have posed a striking question of whether atheists and agnostics are defective if they do not possess a predisposition to spirituality.

Again, the field of neurotheology is still young. When push comes to shove, it is questionable if science and religion will ever entirely disprove the other. Thankfully, some scientists are willing to stay open-minded and operate assuming that both science and religion can exist in harmony!

What Does the Evidence Mean for Worship?

Faith-filled spiritual people can look to neurotheology studies as even more reason to delve deeper into our practices! If it’s proven that spiritual practices, including deep prayer and meditation, can shape our brains and improve their function, then that lends even more support to practicing our rituals and daily practices.

The results are also a huge breakthrough during our mental health crisis across all groups. Spirituality reminds us we’re not separate from each other or the Divine and feel a sense of oneness and purpose. We can find solace in others and the divine presence. Those with mental health issues can find strength to turn away from bad habits and toxic cycles that worsen their situation. Instead, they can turn to spirituality tools, such as prayer and meditation to find balance, peace, and harmony with the Universe.

25 Things To Improve Your Physical Health

The 25 Things You Can Do To Immediately Improve Your Physical Health

Every month, it seems there’s a new trend for getting back in shape and improving your physical health, especially around the New Year’s celebrations. Most of the time, these trends are based too loosely on scientific facts and have not been tested or proven to work. Doesn’t it seem like people would rather try fast trends and quick fixes because they aren’t motivated enough to try the things that take longer, aren’t as popular, but actually work?

If you’re truly looking to improve your health right now, there are so many traditional, tried-and-true practices you can instill in your life overnight. With dedication, you can completely change your life–no need to burn through your savings on fancy new gadgets or methods. To help you get started, here’s a diverse list of 25 things you can do to improve your physical health right now. They range from practical and basic to spiritual and less common, so you’re sure to find something that fits your needs.

1. Forgive

Have you ever felt really great after resolving a conflict? Forgiveness is of course great for your mental and emotional wellbeing, but many people do not appreciate how much of an effect our mental health has on worsening or improving your physical health. Stress and negative emotions can wear away at our body’s immune system and throw our hormones off balance. Take time to forgive so that your body can find harmony again!

One amazing ritual of forgiveness is the Ho’oponopono forgiveness ritual, in which you repeat the mantra, “I’m sorry. I love you, please forgive me. Thank you.” No matter if the ritual is directed at another or yourself, the benefits will change your life.

2. Meditate

Meditation is becoming mainstream in the psychology world because of how amazing the benefits are for physical and mental health. Like I said before, negative emotions and thoughts can seriously take a toll on our physical health, especially when we always keep ourselves busy, distracted, and burned out. To help relieve burnout and become more present in the moment, meditation forces you to stop and breathe. You can reduce stress and anxiety as well as improve the quality of sleep you get by starting a regular meditation practice! Try out some of these mantras to get started.

3. Yoga

Originating from India, yoga is both a spiritual and physical practice. It combines stretching, stillness within poses, breathing, and meditation to help align body, mind, and spirit. With yoga, you can help yourself find harmony, breathe, and sleep better. Certain routines can also improve digestion, heart health, symptoms of arthritis, and more. In addition, practicing yoga regularly will help you improve your flexibility, core strength, and balance, which are all great for your muscles and posture. The best part is that yoga comes in all different forms and levels of experience. If you’re not very active, there are plenty of poses and routines that will help you ease into the practice without pushing your limits too far.

4. Qi Gong

Qi Gong is a popular practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine that combines extremely precise movements, breathing, and meditation. The goal is to practice specific movements and poses to absolute perfection, focusing your mind and muscles. Qi Gong is known for healing, as it also focuses on the energy flow within the body including the channels and gateways of our energy flows. Much like yoga, Qi Gong can improve flexibility, strength, and balance because of its physical precision. At the same time, the precise repetitive movements are perfect for lulling the mind into a meditative trance that lowers anxiety, stress, and might even help support a body’s defense against chronic illness.

5. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is another popular healing practice of Eastern medicine that focuses on triggering very specific points in the body. It is believed to target the body’s central nervous system by releasing chemicals that affect the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. Acupuncture focuses on specific areas of the body in order to relieve symptoms of certain ailments, such as those who suffer from nausea, chronic back pain, stress, and headaches. An acupuncturist is well-learned about which points on the body need to be triggered to release the right chemicals according to their client’s needs.

6. Tai Chi

Tai Chi used to be an ancient form of Chinese combat, but now it is celebrated around the world as a gentle form of exercise. People of all experience levels can benefit from Tai Chi, which essentially combines gentle flowing movements with meditation. Each pose and movement is meant to flow seamlessly into the next one without hesitation or stillness, much like dancing. If you are not used to exercise, Tai Chi is a great place to start as it is very low impact. It can also help to reduce anxiety, stress, and even the risk of other health conditions.

7. Set a Routine

Going back to the basics, setting a routine is one of the best things you can do for your overall help. Sitting down to set a routine will help you assess your priorities and make sure you have time for everything you need and want to do during the day. Having a routine also helps you make sure you don’t forget anything and that you to get into the right mindset to be both productive and happy. You can set really great healthy habits into your routine, such as always making sure to implement a strong skincare routine and always taking your vitamins with your breakfast. Make sure to also make time for your mental health with a routine in meditation, prayer, or rituals.

8. Stretch and Stand More

Bloodflow is so important to our survival and happiness. Good circulation is necessary for healing, while bad circulation can cause us to lose feeling and use of our bodies. Bloodflow is also extremely necessary for our brains because we need oxygen to move freely throughout our bodies. People who are extremely sedentary, whether it is by choice or because of the demands of our lives, often suffer from poor circulation, which can lead to blood clots and strokes. Those who don’t get up and move are at higher risk of chronic pain, heart disease, and diabetes. Even if you work at your desk all day, make sure you make a routine out of stretching, standing, and moving around. Your muscles need a break from all the rest they have!

9. Improve Nutrition

Improving what you eat each day will look different for everyone, so I won’t recommend a diet here. A great piece of advice is to just make better little choices every day! So many people fail to keep their commitments to new diets because these diets are so extreme. Going from eating a full, average diet to completely cutting out gluten and dairy, for example, won’t have a very high success rate! Instead, be mindful about what you eat. Every time you make a meal, think about one little change you can make to create a meal that’s just a tiny bit healthy. That can mean that you add a serving of vegetables or you cook without butter this time. Small changes over a long time will actually have a huge impact on your health.

10. Massage

I bet I don’t have to convince you too much, here. Massages are not just guilty pleasures–they’re a great way to improve your physical health. Massage therapists can help you improve your joint flexibility, loosen up muscles that are stuck too tight, improve circulation, and so much more. In addition, the soothing atmosphere and great feeling of the massage can reduce stress and anxiety.

11. Cupping

Cupping is as old as the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and throughout the Middle East. It is done by placing cups along muscles and creating suction as a form of deep tissue massage that can help relieve pain, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and more. Sometimes, the cupping therapist might make small incisions in the skin and put the cups back on to pull a small amount of blood, called wet cupping.

12. Fighting

It might seem counterintuitive that fighting could be beneficial for your physical health, but the Chinese believe that ritual fighting is one of the key aspects of wellbeing. There are many ancient forms of fighting, including Tai Chi as mentioned before, which allows one to work the body and mind while also working through emotions and relieving aggression. If you’re going to try fighting, of course, find an art form you can commit to and safely practice it under supervision of professionals.

13. Fall in Love with the Arts

Many feel that the arts are a strictly mental and emotional thing. Sure, when you’re looking at a piece of art or practicing a form of art yourself, you’re not necessarily thinking about how it affects your physical body. Researchers have found, though, that appreciation of the arts can actually improve your brain and physical wellbeing. Appreciating music and art has shown to help victims of health conditions and serious health events like strokes heal faster than those who don’t!

14. Avoid Energy Vampires

There’s nothing quite as disturbing to our mental and physical health as constantly being plagued by energy vampires or people who thrive on draining energy from others. These people might be narcissists or so needy for attention that no one else around them can properly take care of themselves. Of course, this is terrible for mental health, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression that can cause serious physical health ailments.

15. HIIT Exercise

Never feel like you have enough time to improve your physical health? HIIT might be the answer! This short yet intense workout routine will have you sweating in minutes, but then ready to move on with your day. The practice emphasizes high-intensity cardio bursts of exercise with periods of rest for your body to recover so that you can build your strength and endurance quickly without losing hours at the gym.

16. Embrace Your True Self

When we aren’t comfortable with ourselves, we’re less likely to take care of ourselves. It is so important to discover ourselves for who we truly are so that we can address everything that is holding us back and plunge into our fullest lives. Once you understand what makes you happy and what is missing from your life, you can take action to improve your lifestyle and start doing what will help you be healthier, both mentally and physically.

17. Moxibustion

Moxibustion is not acupuncture, but it’s very similar. Sometimes, the two are even used in conjunction with each other to help a person. Acupuncture and moxibustion use different trigger points on the body. Moxibustion is used to increase blood flow and help relieve symptoms of chronic illness and pain. Moxi is also burned to create a slow heat that can help release muscles and reduce aches.

18. Start Gardening

There’s something unexplainable about what gardening can do for the body and mind. Becoming one with nature and using your skills and knowledge to help cultivate the growth of new life is unlike any other experience. Getting your hands in the dirt, smelling the earth, and getting fresh air are amazing for your physical health. In addition, you can choose to grow edible plants for your kitchen, stocking your shelves with fresh ingredients that encourage trying new recipes and home cooking!

19. Introduce Plants Into Your Home

While you’re growing plants outside, try bringing some inside as well! Being shut indoors can create stuffy, recycled air that lacks life. Plants inside your home can turn your carbon dioxide into oxygen, refreshing the air. People who have indoor plants experience a relief of fatigue and pain and improved moods.

20. Get an Animal Companion

No matter which animal you choose, having an animal companion greatly improves your physical health. Regardless of the type of animal, having a sense of responsibility for a living being other than yourself helps you to establish a routine, especially one of hygiene. You begin cleaning more, especially in the areas they use, which can help your health and the environment within your home. Animals that go outside also bring in germs and viruses from the outside world and expose you in a way that helps your immune system to build up immunity. If your animal needs exercise, you’ll also be encouraged to stay more active with them!

21. Reflexology

Reflexology is applying pressure to specific pressure points on your body that connect to your nervous system and energy flow, much like acupuncture, moxibustion, and other forms of TCM. Reflexologists specifically focus on the feet because they are known for thousands of nerve endings. They use special movements of their fingers to trigger specific points on the foot to ailments of all kinds for all different parts of the body and can help you relax, boost your metabolism, and relieve pain.

22. Go Into Nature

The poets know it: nature heals the mind, body, and soul. Those who are fed up with their busy lives, deprived of fresh air and wide-open spaces, take to an escape to the wilderness for healing. Retreating into the loving embrace of Mother Earth will certainly help you heal, no matter your ailments. Breathe in the fresh air, stretch your muscles with a hike, and soak in the benefits of unadulterated sunlight.

23. Declutter

For some people, clutter is normal. Busy schedules keep people from putting things back where they belong, and things can really pile up. Being overwhelmed by physical possessions, trash, and unnecessary items can harm your ability to function. It could even impede your ability to do necessary things around the house like clean. Start decluttering and soon you’ll get lost in the process. You’ll be up doing something productive, and you’ll burn calories while you’re at it.

24. Feng Shui

Feng Shui is a powerful Chinese system that explains that everything around us affects and has its own energy. The way you place your things around you has a huge effect on how energy flows through you, and sometimes this negatively blocks up your energy flow. You can increase the flow of positive energy and improve your physical health by following some basic guidelines and adding some objects to your space. You can improve your mood and energy levels and bring prosperity into your life!

25. Celebrate Water

We truly do take water for granted. Water is essential to life, and it has so many amazing spiritual and physical property that are necessary to the planet and our survival. Using water throughout the day should be sacred: it is healing, reviving, and even fun! Taking a warm bath can ease our aches and pains. Swimming in water can support our bodies while we stretch and strengthen our muscles. Drinking water hydrates our brains and bodies so that we can function. Change your mindset on water and you’ll completely turn your life around!

REMEMBER!

You are a beautiful Living Being filled with light and love, born from stardust. You are unlimited potential in every direction. With a focus on discipline, virtue, and your own goodness, you can become as expanded and liberated as you desire.

Psychedelics & Substances That Improve Mental & Spiritual Health

Psychedelic Mushrooms & Other Awesome Substances That Inspire Psychological Health & Spiritual Transformation

The war between those who want it to be legal to get “high” and those who want to ban all substances that get you “high” has been raging on for years, but the history of using mushrooms and other hallucinogenics has gone on for much longer across the globe. Almost every culture has had widespread use of substances to achieve an altered state of mind, including mushrooms, plants, oils, beans, and more. During this historical use of substances, many cultures revered these altered states of mind as ways to reach a higher power, speak to other worlds, and further the journey of their higher selves. Now, we know there are substances that improve mental health and spiritual health.

As modern governments have begun restricting the use of these substances more and more, groups who still wish to use them are fighting back. Marijuana, for example, has been illegal for so long and is finally being slowly legalized because studies reveal that claims of its dangers were unfounded. The benefits far outweigh the risks–and marijuana is not the only substance now being investigated. A new movement to legalize psychedelics claims that these substances have huge benefits for those with mental health struggles.

Interested in how these substances might help you tackle your own struggles, whether they’re psychological or spiritual? Here’s a list of some awesome substances that improve mental and spiritual health that you can discover.

Psilocybin or Magic Mushrooms

One of the most significant innovations in recent mental health advancements regarding the use of substances is psilocybin or the main active ingredient of “magic mushrooms.” The movement is so massive that major outlets are now calling it the “psychedelic gold rush.” This gold rush is a pushback from the government’s use (and some would claim misuse) of their categorizations of substances. Psychedelics like ketamine, MDMA, and psilocybin are classed as Schedule I substances, which means they have a high risk for abuse without the counteractive benefit of medical value. Many scientists and innovators are exclaiming that the categorization is just plain false. Further, that banning these substances that improve mental health will negatively affect us for generations to come.

Many innovators are experimenting with combining psychedelic-based drugs with conventional therapy, and they’re coming up with promising results. Those who suffer from PTSD and depression, for example, are currently undergoing clinical trials with psilocybin and reporting relief from their symptoms. As a result, many U.S. cities have begun decriminalizing the drug so that its benefits can be explored and enjoyed as of the recent Presidential election.

Psilocybin, or magic mushrooms, have a long history of spiritual benefits as well. The indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica used these substances for healing and divine inspiration. Art created in reverence of these substances date back well before Columbus’s time, even dating back to 6,000 years ago. In 1955, European Americans took part in an indigenous psychedelic mushroom ceremony and published an article in Life magazine, inspiring Harvard academics to attempt the ceremony as well and to eventually start the Harvard Psilocybin Project, which covered religious and psychological effects of the substance.

An altered state of mind is exactly what many believe is the key to accessing the higher self or divine powers. As humans trapped in our flat reality, our minds have a hard time escaping the view of what’s around us. Turning inward and breaking down the mind’s boundaries can help us explore new mindsets, think thoughts that were otherwise impossible, and tap into previously unreachable dimensions.

Peyote Cactus

Speaking of the American indigenous peoples, Peyote was a widely popular substance used for accessing a new level of spirituality as well as for medicinal purposes. Peyote is a cactus found in the Southwest and in Mexico which you can pull buttons off and chew on them to experience a “trip.” Like magic mushrooms, Peyote was also outlawed by the U.S. government, but its use is still prevalent. As an exception, Native Americans who are a part of the Native American Church are allowed to continue using Peyote for their religious ceremonies.

Research on psychedelics has been mostly shut down by the U.S. government, as the general claim is that the use of these substances can lead to brain damage and altered personalities. Scientists agree that long-term heavy use of psychedelics can be damaging but argue that use in small, controlled doses can actually offer many benefits. John H. Halpbern, a psychiatrist from the Harvard School of Medicine, has been studying the use of Peyote by Native Americans for years. Specifically, Halpbern believes Peyote and other Native American substances can help to fight addiction and alcoholism. He claims that tribes that use Peyote for religious ceremonies have much lower rates of alcoholism, which is a rampant issue among the Native American population.

During these religious ceremonies, only three teaspoons on average of Peyote is ingested by participants, which Halpbern explains is only enough to experience a buzz of stimulant, not hallucinate. He explains that it most likely only serves to deepen the emotions felt during the ceremony and helps the participants to open up their minds and hearts to the spirituality of the ritual.

Peyote, therefore, is another powerful substance that, when used properly, can help open up our minds to access our higher selves and even to dimensions beyond our own. Combined with rituals and meditation, Peyote helps the Native Americans to come together in spiritual enlightenment and speak to the divine. It’s truly a powerful substance that improves mental and spiritual health.

Ibogaine or Iboga Bark

In Africa, the Tabernanth iboga plant has been at the center of religious experiences. The Babongo people worship this plant and the drug that derives from it because of its strong hallucinogenic effects. It is used as a part of their religious ceremonies, as the Babongo people feel it is a way to tap into spiritual knowledge. When the bark is pulverized and ingested, those who take it can experience a wide range of emotions and visions, including anxiety, euphoria, and a blending of their senses to create other-worldly experiences.

Ibogaine is so powerful that it’s influence has stretched far outside of Africa. In fact, it’s been used in Western medicine since the 1800s to lower blood pressure, treat fevers, and even help with toothaches. However, the United States has since banned the use of Ibogaine, claiming it has no medical value yet has a high potential for abuse. Researchers are still investigating the drug and suspect that it may play a valuable role in mitigating the opioid crisis as well as provide medical value in other ways if controlled.

Kava

Kava is a popular plant extract used mostly in beverages in the South Pacific. It’s been used in spiritual ceremonies to relax participants and relieve symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and even drug withdrawal. Kava was made illegal to sell in the Canadian and European markets due to its history of causing liver damage and death, but after reviews of the lack of evidence, it was reinstated on the market in most countries. In any case, Kava affects the brain and central nervous system and can be taken for up to 6 months straight safely for anxiety. Now, it’s even a popular substance sold as drinks and used socially similarly to beer.

Pacific Islanders highly revere kava for its ability to bring people together and channel communications with the spirits. Kava is regularly consumed during religious ceremonies in efforts to strengthen kinship and speak with divine powers from other dimensions. Kava drinking was also used as a way to reaffirm the status and hierarchy within societies.

When diluted properly, Kava can cause a state of aloofness, where one is happy and unconcerned. They might feel more free of their mind and body, and they’ll never experience unpleasant feelings like alcohol can cause. While feeling free, the Kava user never loses control of their reason. On the other hand, excessive use of Kava can cause a lack of control over muscles, making it more difficult to move quickly. Eventually, heavy Kava users can lose sense of objects around them and drift off to sleep.

When it comes to accessing deeper spirituality with Kava, therefore, you can quiet your mind, pull your senses out of the physical world, and get in better touch with the higher self and the divine. Further, it’s definitely one of the powerful substances that improves mental health.

The Conspiracies Unwinding Virtue And Compassion

The Conspiracies & Theories That Are Unwinding Virtue And Compassion

Every individual in every demographic across the globe has their own life experiences, struggles, and accomplishments. While this thing we call “life” is universal, what life looks like to every one of us is drastically different. Embracing that each person has their own identity, struggles, and points of view is key to harmony and love in our Universe, and yet that is often what is standing in the way of our happiness.

Often, what we think comes first, and other people’s emotions and opinions come second. Unfortunately, this means that genuinely connecting with others and expanding our minds becomes nearly impossible. If we want a world of virtue and compassion, we must be a source of that virtue and compassion, not the bullshit “woke” that everyone claims that they are.

Opposing our loving efforts is what many are now calling an “infodemic.” Aside from the pandemic sweeping the globe, we also have a rapid-fire inundation of “information” and “data” from millions of sources, all competing for our attention and seeking to persuade us of their “truth.” This infodemic is fueling conspiracy theories that turn us against each other. We must address these theories, pinpoint their sources and motivations, and work to dismantle them.

Anti-Chinese Theories

Americans are very familiar with anti-China rhetoric. Past Presidents have warned against China’s motivations and dealings behind closed doors. Behind these anti-China feelings is the lack of experience and understanding of China throughout history and how their experiences and belief systems have shaped their culture. With every observation about another culture or government, we must first preface our discussion to acknowledge that someone else is not wrong just because they don’t think, look, and act the same as we do.

Nothing on our planet can be exactly perfect, especially not when human beings construct it. We are not perfect and therefore cannot expect to create an ideal political structure–we can only do our best to set a guide that we think will ascertain justice while functioning within the global economy. China is an extremely old civilization and has evolved to function within modern society in its own unique way, while America is one of the youngest nations and has not been tested by many of the other historical events that other countries have weathered.

Anti-China sentiments in the past have ranged from racist beliefs about the Chinese individuals to conspiracy theories about their government. The main source of these conspiracy theories is the wide disconnect between America’s democratic political structure and China’s communist political structure, combined with a history of anti-Communist sentiment stemming from WWII. Americans, who tend to be extraordinarily nationalistic and tie their political leanings to morality, see China and its communist structure as a threat to their way of life. Any spreading of Communist China’s ideas into American land leaves many Americans uneasy, motivating anti-Chinese conspiracy theories.

While these conspiracy theories aren’t new, they’re certainly renewed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. From the beginning, theories have been rising and evolving surrounding China’s involvement in the virus’s origins. These conspiracies have infected the hearts of the minds of others to the point that Chinese individuals outside of China have been attacked verbally and physically in public. At the same time, China is not an innocent victim–the government has been known to spin conspiracies of its own in order to deflect blame for past faults and stop rhetoric against their practices.

These misinformation wars only hurt us as humans. Instead of meeting on common ground and tackling problems rationally as a united race, we’ve been kicking issues down the road and playing the blame game. To find harmony with each other, we must show compassion and work together to move forward.

Anti-Vax Movements

Similar to anti-China theories and sentiments, anti-vax conspiracies aren’t new. For as long as we have had vaccination technology, people have been skeptical of the science’s effects and motivations. Notably, the 1800s saw anti-smallpox vaccination movements in both Europe and the U.S. When we developed vaccinations for diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus, and started distributing the MMR vaccine, we had anti-vaccination movements for those, too. Vaccination conspiracies ran so deep that they resulted in anti-vaccination leagues.

At first, vaccination conspiracies needed to spread literally by word of mouth and print publications. Now the internet, full of social media platforms and opinion-based websites, makes it so much easier to spread hysteria and misinformation with very few standards for reliable sourcing. Not helping the matter is the decreasing levels of trust in news networks, publications, and leaders in both the medical community and politics. When the public trusts no one, conspiracy theories abound.

The COVID-19 pandemic showed just how much the lack of trust in leaders and the rapid spread of misinformation could spur conspiracies and get in the way of listening to recommended safety measures. Theories rose about how the companies producing the vaccines were only motivated by money, hospitals were faking COVID statistics, and vaccines were actually a mechanism to plant trackers in everyone. Making it worse were those who continually disparaged people who were genuinely scared of getting vaccinated–the lack of compassion and understanding on both sides only fueled these conspiracies. It made people dig in their heels even more.

The results of these conspiracy theories, fueled by uncompassionate pro-vaccination people, the rapid spread of misinformation, and distrust in leadership, is the loss of virtue and sense of responsibility for others. People, too worried about the consequences of masking and vaccinating for themselves, lose sight of how their refusal to mask and vaccinate during COVID affects others. As a result, those who have chronic and terminal illnesses, can’t be vaccinated, or are otherwise extremely vulnerable to severe consequences of catching the virus, are left to fend for themselves and cower in fear.

Not many are willing to do it, as it seems humans have an intrinsic tendency to take sides and fully disown those who do not align with them, but some people have attempted to build bridges. Many health professionals have attempted to offer an olive branch to anti-vaccination advocates, offering their professional advice compassionately. Some academics and thought leaders have attempted to trace the history of the anti-vax movement and conspiracy theories in general to pinpoint the reason why so many people fall into the traps of misinformation.

By fully understanding the feelings and motivations of both sides of the argument, we can work together as a human race to find solutions and make the world safe for everyone.

Antisemitic Conspiracies

Of course, old recurring conspiracy theories and sentiments do not stop at anti-Chinese and anti-vaccination movements. Antisemitism has existed for as long as the Jewish faith has, and that’s an extremely long time. The Bible and the Talmud accounts for many of the original social and political efforts to enslave and slander the Jewish people, including the Egyptians, Romans, and Persians. Modern history shows a very similar story, marked by the Holocaust and hatred in the Middle East.

In current day America, we are not free of antisemitism, either. To this day, anti-Jewish sentiments and theories abound. While the Jewish population only makes up a small amount of the American population, they generally are a very successful demographic. Many people note that they dominate very financially lucrative industries, and this causes both jealousy and skepticism in other sections of the population. Some people claim that Jews are part of an elite group that runs the world and that they plot to wipe out white Christian society.

Even if you’ve never heard of any other conspiracy theories about the Jews, you’ve likely heard of the Rothschild family. This family, which is the most wealthy family in the world, happens to be Jewish. They also happen to be at the center of the most deep-rooted and perpetuated conspiracy theories revolving around the “one-world order.”

It’s true: people do make decisions based on money. They do make bad decisions, in fact, and often act with selfish motivations. Conspiracy theories, however, often are based in the fact that a single demographic or group of people has the power to hold total control over the entire world to the extent that everyone is in on the scheme except those who are “woke.” Much to conspiracy theorists’ dismay, this is barely possible. When we can never agree with even our close family and friends, how can we believe that everyone on the planet could conspire and uphold such a mighty plan without ever slipping up or saying something that could give away their plans?

Proof? History shows us that even extremely mighty and conniving forces who have sought to take over the world were incapacitated by everyone else who knew their bad motivations and stepped up to stop it. Most famously, the Nazis’ terrible motivations and plans were eventually revealed as stopped by global forces.

In other words, if there was a reason to have suspicions about the motivations of Jews, it wouldn’t be something we’d need to speak about in hushed tones or wonder about without hard evidence.

Climate Change Denial

The jury is still out on what motivations some have for denying climate science, but vocal groups have been spinning rhetoric for years to undermine the efforts of scientists and those making sustainable changes to their daily life. Over years, scientists have been polling at over 99% agreement that the climate is changing and humans play a major role in that change. The Intergovernmental Panel Of Climate Change (IPCC) has been tracking and reporting that the number one cause of climate change since 1750 is increased CO2 production due to deforestation and the advancements that came from the industrial revolution.

While climate scientists are continually compiling data on the changes in the earth’s climate and the root causes, many people claim that the entire concept is a hoax. Particularly among conservative media, groups have claimed that climate scientists are part of a conspiracy to fake data and corrupt the peer-review process. They believe that the reports have been doctored to prove climate change despite evidence that it is the earth’s natural process or not a concern at all.

Most likely, climate change deniers truly believe that climate change is a hoax and feel they have seen persuasive evidence of the conspiracy. This denial is combined with an overall distrust in government and scientific leaders who are increasingly losing their standing with much of the public. Many groups are convinced that governmental powers and experts are swayed by money and selfish gains, so perpetuating a climate change hoax could be in their favor. This is even truer for people who want to keep power in the hands of local small governments rather than handing all control over to centralized, big governments since many political leaders have taken action to impose sweeping limitations on the use of certain unsustainable products or practices.

Further, many sustainable companies have popped up to offer “green” products and services in the face of climate change. Of course, when profit is involved in the pursuance of an otherwise good cause, motivations and intentions are called into question. Many believe that green companies are a scam, taking advantage of the climate crisis to profit from people’s fear and desire to improve their lifestyles. Not helping this matter is the fact that many large companies have muddied the waters for what it means to be sustainable and meet true standards for helping the environment, causing several PR scandals and perpetuating false advertising.

Again, it’s important not to enter the conversation as judgemental and arrogant. Most people do not make claims or believe in conspiracies just to cause frustration or perpetuate bad practices. Climate change deniers have good intentions, such as protecting their families from what they perceive is an unnecessary fear, trying to keep their businesses afloat in the face of limiting policies, and genuine distrust of leadership.

On the other hand, it’s important to consider what ignoring climate change warnings will do for the global population and future generations. Countries throughout the world are feeling the real threat of climate change imminently, such as in Venice, where the city is increasingly underwater, and our Great Barrier Reef, which increased water temperatures have bleached. As temperatures continue to rise and make the climate less habitable, many countries’ cash crops will die off and no longer grow, such as coffee and maize, leading to economic disasters.

All of this is to say that denying climate change is not just a matter of protecting ourselves now. Continuing to ignore the reality of climate change fundamentally fuels a lack of care and responsibility for others. The lack of compassion for how the effects of climate change will affect our own lineage and the generations that live around the world is a serious issue for how we live together as a race on this planet.

Government-Mandated School Shootings

Of all the tragedies that frequently occur in America, one of the most terrifying and depressing is school shootings. Parents looking for an education and chance to grow for their children send their kids as young as 4 and 5 off to public schools and educational programs. Now, every goodbye kiss before school seems like it’s laced with impending doom. Every day,  eight children are killed by gun violence, and guns are the leading cause of death among those under 18.

As a country, we should be absolutely stunned by these facts, and yet large groups of people deny that laws should limit gun ownership and usage. Further, groups of people are claiming those school shootings aren’t just coincidences—the government mandates them to push for radical gun control and incite further divide among party lines. Many of these conspiracies even link George Soros, a commonly targeted man for antisemitic theories.

These conspiracies involve “crisis actors,” which many claim are also at the heart of the media’s coverage of other politically-fueled controversies such as events involving the Black Lives Matter movement. These crisis actors, according to theories, are paid to play a part in the events themselves and as interviewees on news networks. Their goal? To push agendas of gun control advocates and force strict laws on gun ownership.

People who believe in the conspiracy theories, as much as they might genuinely believe them, forget what perpetuating these theories can do to the real victims and those around them. Hate mail and threats of all kinds from more malicious people stream in to harass and abuse those who are already suffering so tragically from these events. The concerns of kids and families about being safe at school are dashed and ignored. Ultimately, it becomes even more difficult to introduce measures that will keep schools safe and save lives.

The Dawn of Mankind: Theories & Possibilities

The Dawn of Mankind: Theories & Possibilities

Recently, scientists have figured out the methods and technology needed to hypothetically create a baby universe. At first, this discovery is extremely fascinating, but then the reality sets in–what does that mean for the dawn of mankind and our universe?

If you have ever wondered how we all came into existence, this scientific advancement should strike your interest. If we, as a very young race, have figured out what would be needed to create an entirely new universe, what stops other advanced civilizations, species, and divine beings from doing the same?

The universe is more ancient than we could even conceptualize, but Earth has only been around for a few short billions of years. Believe what you’d like about the dawn of mankind, but the best way to get to a conclusion is to explore the theories yourself!

The Dawn of Mankind Starting with a Big Bang

Until this very moment, the most popular theory about the creation of the universe among scientists is the Big Bang. Without having been there to experience it ourselves, though, we might never know for sure. The first observation that spurred this theory was the realization that other galaxies were steadily moving further away from ours. They’re racing away as if they are escaping the center of an explosion.

The theory goes that around 13-15 billion years ago, all energy and matter existed within one compact point. At some point, that compacted area exploded, sending all that matter and energy away in all directions at almost the speed of light. It is believed that all elements in our universe at present exist and move as a result of this explosion. Necessarily then, humankind only exists due to the Big Bang and a series of fortunate events. The perfect combinations of matter, elements, and energy created the materials and environments necessary, leading to our existence.

Many then ask the question, “Is the Earth the center of the universe if all the other galaxies, planets, and stars are moving away from us?” At first glance, it might seem that this supports many religious theories that the Earth received extra special attention from God. In truth, it is merely an illusion that the Earth is standing still.

Just as how a cookie or cake expands in the oven, the energy and matter in the universe expand. There is no one point–chocolate chip or nut in the baked good–that stays still while the other moves away. Instead, all things are expanding and moving at the same time.

The Big Bang, while unproven, is not a farfetched theory. There are tons of explosions happening throughout the universe, and we have observed many ourselves using our technology. We also have advanced scientific principles and laws that have arisen and explained many occurrences we know have happened, making this theory even more plausible.

Unfortunately, there are a few companion theories about what the Big Bang means for the end of the universe. Some say that eventually, like a rubber band, the universe will reach a pivotal point at which it begins to collapse back in on itself by the force of gravity, otherwise known as the Big Crunch. Others have noticed that the universe seems to be accelerating its outward trajectory as if pulled by an anti-gravity force.

The Dawn of Mankind as Apelike Ancestors

As part of the Big Bang theory, the dawn of mankind and evolution is commonly believed to have started with apes. Scientists mark the first significant stepping stone towards the present version of our species at the point when we began walking on two legs, also known as bipedalism. It wasn’t until very recently that our species began forming more complex brains that allowed us to use language and tools. Further, many philosophers use the point at which we began creating art as a significant turning point in our species’ existence.

Apes still exist, yes, but scientists explain that the human species evolved as a branch from a common ape-like ancestor and evolved alongside several other versions of evolved ape species. Today, humans are primates and closely related to apes in genetic makeup. The oldest known evidence of humans and their evolution primarily involve Africa, where most of humankind’s evolutionary journey occurred.

There are many competing theories about the number of different human species, how they ceased to exist, and what their roles were throughout time. There are theories that our human species, homo sapiens, was dominant and exterminated the other versions of our species in one way or the other. Many people also do not accept these theories, whether they don’t believe in evolution or agree that the evidence found so far proves any one solution.

Our Alien Creators

If we could hypothetically create a new universe, what stops us from believing that another civilization created ours? According to Scientific American, our universe has zero net energy and flat geometry, which makes it incredibly easy to use quantum tunneling to recreate it.

Of course, “easy” should be taken relatively. We don’t yet have the advanced technological devices to create a universe ourselves, and we still have yet to connect the theories of gravity and quantum mechanics. Still, our increasing knowledge in the areas makes the eventual ability very likely.

Our current inability to create a universe still makes our existence unproductive in the minds of this theorized creator civilization. It’s most likely that we have been designed as a stepping stone to produce more advanced societies, and we won’t be able to fulfill this purpose until we achieve universe-creating abilities. In the meantime, our race goes through an evolutionary journey, driven by Darwinian selection, until we have the advanced technology and knowledge required.

The idea that aliens have created our universe with the intention for it to evolve into another advanced civilization is the theory most thought-out by leading scientists, but the possibilities are endless. We can only rely on science so much when the potential for boundless knowledge means that so many of our theories are incorrect or not built out enough. The truth is, science is limited to understanding what we can physically test ourselves within our dimensions and universe. There’s no way to test the laws of other universes and dimensions that we have not yet accessed, and there’s no way to prove and explore immaterial occurrences and beings.

Several decades ago, the Nobel-Prize Winner, named Enrico Fermi, casually remarked that if there were aliens, we would have experienced them on Earth already. These comments sent scientists and philosophers in a tail-spin: Why haven’t we heard from aliens yet if they really do exist?

Thinks came to some conclusions. Either aliens don’t exist, they only exist as beings less intelligent than ourselves, or that they have come to Earth and we just haven’t noticed!

The last possibility is more likely than you think. For example, there is a theory that many human beings walking among us are actually Starseeds, or reincarnated aliens from other planets and universes that have come to help humankind advance and achieve their true purpose. Only when these beings reach self-enlightenment will they remember their past lives and purpose on Earth. Who knows, maybe you’re a Starseed!

God as Creator

The most recent results from a Gallup poll, which occurred in 2019, revealed the most popular theories for the dawn of mankind and evolution in relation to God as Creator. Three possible answers were offered to survey takers: (1) Humans evolved with God guiding the journey over millions of years, (2) Humans were created by God in their present form around 100,000 years ago, and (3) Humans evolved without God’s intervention over millions of years.

The same question has been asked since 1982 and has yielded 14 years of solid results. Even in 2019, as sentiments toward agnosticism and atheism grow, the prevailing beliefs surrounding humankind’s creation and journey on Earth involve God in the process.

The most consistent response? In every one of the poll’s results except one, 40% or more of those surveyed answered that they believed humans have evolved with the guidance of God. Close behind, consistently polling at over one-third of those surveyed, is the belief that God created humans in their present form. Answers of “no opinion” or the idea that humans evolved with no divine intervention consistently poll at meager numbers. It was not until 2019 that at least 22% responded with the third option.

What do these results tell us? The theories surrounding God’s intervention in the creation and guidance of the universe are compelling and well-received. Around 70% of those surveyed feel the presence of God in their lives, one way or the other, or at least are willing to admit that it’s very likely divine intervention is real. Further, a majority of the population receives scientific knowledge and advancements withl the acknowledgment that they do not disprove the possibility of a divine presence.

There are many theories surrounding God’s role in the creation and evolution of the universe. Many of these theories are widely held by Christians and Jews, such as the story of Creation and Adam and Eve in the Bible. At the very least, the story is a metaphor for how God set up our world and race to many religious people. Some believe that the planet and humans have not evolved but exist precisely how God created them. Others believe that God created us and the universe with the ability to evolve, only intervening to guide the process subtly.

Other religions have their own stories of the dawn of mankind as Creation. In Hinduism, the three gods of creation, destruction, and preservation continually cycle the existence of the material world. Islam shares the story of Creation with Judaism and Christianity but recounts it much more generally. They believe all humankind comes from Adam, and many believe the story supports the Big Bang theory.

God as Creator is a well-received theory because God means so many things. This theory does not only include the Christian, Islamic, or Jewish gods, but God as a divine being throughout all different religions. Religion itself goes back further than humankind can remember. The feeling that something bigger than ourselves is out there, and that our race has a divine purpose and potential, is an innate gut feeling built into our existence.

Dawn of Mankind or Consciousness-Birthed Reality?

Scientists and philosophers have been battling with the concept of consciousness for hundreds of years. From René Descartes to Thomas Nagel, different theories about consciousness and how it affects our existence have arisen, evolved, and collapsed. Does our brain create consciousness? Does consciousness create us? Is consciousness real at all?

There are so many questions to ponder, yet doing so can lead us to feel small and disillusioned. It can even send some into panic as they consider that nothing around them is real at all! How do we tackle these theories? Let’s go over them, starting with dualism and materialism.

René Descartes argued that human existence is split into two parts – the body and the mind. In this strain of thought, our physical bodies exist and function in the physical world. In the immaterial world, our consciousness and souls exist. In direct opposition, materialism argues that our brains are part of our physical bodies and create the illusion of more immaterial things, such as our souls and consciousness, using neural activities.

How do these theories relate to humankind’s origin and existence? Many who believe there is an immaterial aspect to our existence hold the theory that at least part of our human experience lives in the conscious. For example, our feelings, souls, and other divine aspects have no basis in our physical bodies. Further, some believe that nothing physical actually exists at all–it is the consciousness that creates our human experience, built with illusions of a physical world.

Even further: is it possible that only one consciousness exists, meaning that there are not billions of people, but just one being in existence that lives in its own creation?

Taking a step back, we can assess the different levels of consciousness. How can we explain the states of mind that people are in when they experience a coma, dreams, and otherworldly visions? Can all these levels of consciousness be explained away by the science we already have, or is there still so much more to learn about how our brains and consciousness work?

Scientists continue to struggle to encapsulate the concept of consciousness. While some thinkers argue that there is no need to create new scientific laws and terms for consciousness, given that it is a physical phenomenon, it’s hard to deny that we still know almost nothing about it. Even if consciousness can be bound in scientific laws, those laws are still unknown. Some circles are now exploring the idea that consciousness might have something to do with quantum mechanics, but we have yet to understand these theories fully.

We still don’t know much about how the mind perceives the world and creates our experience, and until we know for sure, there’s no way to discount the theory that our reality is born out of an immaterial consciousness.

Diving Deeper into The Dawn of Mankind

No matter which theories you’re more inclined to believe or consider, it doesn’t negate the fact that our universe and humankind have a story that unites us. As a result, our search for the truth of that story is critical and beautiful. Seeking the truth of that story is also essential to your own self-discovery, and including that intention in your daily practices of meditation and prayer can help you delve deeper into your self-awareness!

Need proof? Check out my personality cards, which detail the many different personalities that we all have and use throughout our life journey to cope and thrive. The fact that all of us have encountered these personalities, whether with others or with ourselves, is proof that there’s a common thread that runs through all of us as a species!

REMEMBER!

When it comes to theories about the origins of the universe and humankind, there’s no way to prove the truth, at least for now. By diving within yourself, you can find truth and light! You are far more powerful than you realize. As living beings, we are responsible for ourselves and ourselves alone, so do the best with the existence you have, no matter where it came from.

The Healing Effects Of MDMA & MUSHROOMS

The Healing Effects Of MDMA & MUSHROOMS For PTSD And Other Trauma Conditions

I bet you never thought that drugs made illegal by the United States federal government would suddenly be at the center of a rising interest in the treatment of mental health conditions. Yet, it’s true: the chemicals present in many Schedule I controlled substances are at the forefront of new research about treating the symptoms of PTSD, depression, and other mental health challenges.

In particular, drugs like MDMA and magic mushrooms are helping people with serious illnesses work through their problems and find relief under the close watch of their psychologists. If you suffer from PTSD or another trauma condition, you might want to look closely at the new studies emerging regarding these new substance treatments.

Psilocybin is Turning the World of Psychology Upside Down

Psilocybin is the trending word in today’s psychology studies surrounding illicit substances. This chemical is the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms,” which is a psychoactive substance that causes hallucinations. In controlled doses, however, researchers are finding that the drug can create positive effects on those with mental illnesses or stuck in negative thought patterns affecting their daily life.

Academics once attempted experiments with drugs such as this to study the effects on the brain, but frequent errors and missteps in the processes caused many studies to shut down and the government to tighten up controls. Recently, many U.S. cities have been decriminalizing these drugs in order to open up opportunities for more research and allow those suffering from mental health conditions to find relief. As more studies have shown amazing results, the government has been approving more research requests. In 2016, only two studies occurred regarding the use of illicit drugs, but by 2020, there were 17 trials including LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin as the majority victor.

For example, one trial included a car accident victim with a history of traumatic experiences and a worsening mental health condition. Struck with PTSD, the patient began visits at Imperial College London with his psychologist and neuroscientist. During his visits, the scientists sought to break the negative thought patterns in the patient’s mind by dosing him with psilocybin while laying down and listening to music. The patient began experiencing benign hallucinations, allowing his mind to work through his emotions so he could break through the walls of his PTSD.

As more and more studies pop up surrounding psilocybin, States are beginning to decriminalize and allow it for the use of research and psychological treatment. Results have been astonishingly promising for those who have tried just about every other treatment on the market and have not found any relief for their major depressive disorder, PTSD, addictions, and even eating disorders. For example, in November 2020, one of the studies showed that over 70% of the participating patients taking psilocybin felt more than 50% reduction in their major depressive disorder symptoms over the course of only 4 weeks. Further, 50% of those patients entered total remission. When researchers followed up after the study with those participants, the results promised lasting benefits.

Does Ecstasy Harm or Help Mental Health?

Aside from magic mushrooms or psilocybin, MDMA is at the forefront of mental health research as well. MDMA, also known as molly or ecstasy, names which typically illicit judgment from those who shun street drugs. In fact, the U.S. government has also shunned MDMA as a Schedule I drug, which means that it has no benefits with a high rate of addiction or abuse. Many psychiatrists and researchers are now saying that that categorization is false.

It’s still very controversial whether MDMA can help or hurt. As a rule of thumb, doctors only prescribe medications whose benefits outweigh the risks. MDMA has a history of worsening mental health for heavy users, but many researchers are saying that that is not necessarily MDMA’s fault. One argument is that ecstasy is typically mixed with other drugs when taken illegally. Another argument is that heavy use of any substance is harmful, but in controlled amounts, users can experience benefits safely.

To fully understand, you need to know exactly what MDMA does to a user’s body. Ecstasy is both a stimulant and a hallucinogen, so its effects come in two parts. It raises or alters the levels of three chemicals in your brain: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. The first two, serotonin and dopamine, are well known for affecting your mood and behavior. The last one, norepinephrine, affects the rate of your pulse and your blood pressure. If you take large amounts of MDMA, the effects will eventually wear off and lead to a drop in serotonin and dopamine, which can be linked to depression.

Psychiatrists argue that taking MDMA in a safe environment with controlled doses under the supervision of doctors and psychologists will allow those who suffer from trauma and mental health conditions to find relief much faster and more efficiently than with other treatments.

Current trials are studying the effects of MDMA dosing on patients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. For those with PTSD, trials are still ongoing yet are showing promising preliminary results when dosing is paired with psychotherapy methods. A 2015 study promoted MDMA as a more effective option for the treatment of depression due to its immediate effects in comparison to currency available medications that take a long time to start working. Despite promising results, prescribing MDMA as a prescription drug as a treatment for mental health conditions is still illegal.

What Else Can MDMA and Mushrooms Do?

The science slowly being revealed behind how effective MDMA and psilocybin are as mental health treatments are groundbreaking. Beyond mental health, what other benefits are there to legalizing the use of these substances? Closest to my heart is their long history of helping people open up their minds and hearts to knowledge and experiences beyond their daily life.

Hallucinogenic substances across the world have elevated the human spirit and mind for centuries. Some populations still use these drugs today to carry out their religious and spiritual ceremonies and rituals. For example, the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica used psilocybin for healing and divine inspiration, even as far back as prehistoric times! Art from so long ago depicted these mushrooms and the effects that they had on the people.

Further, academics have been studying the use of Peyote by Native Americans for a long time as well. A famous psychiatrist from Harvard, John H. Halpbern, has been visiting tribes in America to attend their religious ceremonies. The U.S. government has allowed the use of Peyote only in the context of the Native American Church, and Halpbern as well as journalists have documented just how integral these hallucinogenic drugs are to the Native Americans’ spirituality.

In Africa, the iboga plant is a hallucinogenic substance used for religious experiences as well. The Babongo people pulverize it and use it to receive otherworldly knowledge. The effects are known to cause a blending of the senses, visions, and euphoria. In South Asia, Kava is a popular substance consumed for religious ceremonies to strengthen kinship in the community and open up channels of communication with divine powers.

While Kava, Iboga, and Peyote aren’t necessarily MDMA or mushrooms, their basic function and effects are the same: they tap into the mind and help it to break down its barriers and normal structured function so that the user can experience new things beyond this realm. If you’re looking for a way to elevate your spiritual practices, these are certainly an answer!

The Ho’Oponopono: Ancient Rite of Forgiveness

The Ho’Oponopono: The Ancient Rite of Forgiveness

Do you ever get the unshakable feeling of being unwanted or unwelcome around specific people or in a certain environment? Do you ever avoid attending certain events or being around a select group of people because there is “bad blood?” Whether you are at the center of these negative feelings or removed by a degree or two, the effects of grudges and unforgiveness are strong, widespread, and life-changing.

In an unsavory situation such as this, everyone involved can own up to some responsibility. You might have been the one who made the first mistake and then was shunned. You might be the one shunning. Either way, both parties are perpetuating the issue by not taking responsibility for their actions. With both parties unwilling to confront the issue, grudges and negative feelings can last a lifetime and lead to many missed opportunities and ruined experiences.

If you are ready to take control of your side of the situation, it’s time to learn from the masters of forgiveness. Whether or not the other side is ready or willing to move on, you can begin practicing Ho’Oponopono, the ancient Hawaiin rite of forgiveness.

What is Ho’Oponopono?

In Hawaii, “Ho’Oponopono” means “to make things right” or to “move things back into balance.” Unlike other understandings of “making things right,” this ancient ritual is focused on the self and introspection. Many people might think that confrontation with the other party and working things out verbally is the only way to reach forgiveness, but the Hawaiians believe that self-love is at the center of life’s balance in this ritual.

Without any intervention or knowledge of the other party, you can practice Ho’Oponopono by yourself. This ritual cleanses the body of all those negative feelings left over by unfortunate events and helps you to rid yourself of your guilt. This ritual is especially powerful for those who need to forgive themselves, even if the only wrong they committed was to themselves.

How Do I Do the Ho’Oponopono Ritual?

Forgiveness can seem extremely complicated, but the beauty of the Ho’Oponopono ritual is that it’s simple. The ritual is a manta made of four phrases that you can repeat to yourself as much as you need, as often as you need to. Find comfort in a still position, and close your eyes. If you think you need more confrontation with yourself, I like to look at myself in the mirror! Do what you’re comfortable with and go at your own pace.

The next step is to really visualize who you need forgiveness from. If you have wronged someone a long time ago, it’s time to confront them in your mind. You might never be able to face them again, but this ritual will allow you to ask for that forgiveness, and on some level, that person will feel the effects of this powerful ritual, too. If you need forgiveness from yourself, this ritual is an extremely powerful way to begin that healing process and jumpstart your journey towards wholeness and gentle self-love.

When you’re ready, repeat this mantra:

“I love you. I’m sorry. Please Forgive me. Thank you.”

This mantra might come in different forms for different people. If you are struggling to forgive yourself because you don’t have any self-love, it’s important to begin this ritual with “I love you.” Make sure you say it over and over until you start to feel its effects. Make sure you really mean each phrase as you say it.

For others, saying “I’m sorry” might be the biggest struggle. Having a hard time admitting guilt is common, so focusing on “I’m sorry” first could be most important. It is only by breaking down the first wall that we can continue to the next.

Repeating this mantra will help you dive deeper into the meaning of the mantra and slowly cleanse yourself of the guilt and pain. Now, you can begin to heal.

Benefits of the Ho’Oponopono Ritual

Beyond getting past an awkward or unfortunate mistake in the past is just one reason why you should practice the ancient rite of forgiveness. There are so many benefits to performing frequent forgiveness rituals that even fairly content and healthy people should still consider trying Ho’Oponopono!

Self-Love

At the center of this ancient Hawaiin rite of forgiveness is self-love. Learning to love yourself is the first step of many aspects of your life’s journey. Without self-love, every effort and action you take is rooted in hurt and a misunderstanding of yourself. You won’t ever get to know your needs or embrace your true self. How can you ever reach your goals and enjoy life without first discovering and loving yourself?

Sitting quietly in reflection or staring yourself in the face while repeating these mantras can help you delve into yourself and begin breaking down walls. Extend yourself an embrace and accept every edge and corner. By being more loving to yourself, you can also more fully give of yourself to others.

Letting Go of the Past

Many of us live in our past. We think too much about where we’ve been, what we’ve done, and who we’ve met along the way. Because of this, we are creatures of habit and tend to sulk in the darker corners of our minds. We struggle to break the chains of past faults and broken relationships.

Forgiveness requires us to let go of the past, and ultimately, the past doesn’t exist! The past is made up of our memories, many of them faulty and distorted due to our emotions and perceptions. The sooner we accept that the past doesn’t exist and cannot come back to do us any more harm, the sooner we can move on from our guilt and negative experiences.

Improve Mindfulness

Mantras and meditation of any kind are wonderful ways to improve our mindfulness. Not only does Ho’Oponopono help us to forgive ourselves and move on from the past, but it helps us to better root ourselves in the present. Making a point to set an alarm or stop to reflect each day pulls us from our busy routines and forces us to live in the present. The Ho’Oponopono ritual forces us to reflect on ourselves and be with ourselves in the now.

While we’re practicing this ancient ritual, we’re also given the opportunity to check in with ourselves. How do we feel when we tell ourselves “I love you” or “I’m sorry?” Are we uncomfortable, squirmy, unable to make eye contact without ourselves?

How about asking ourselves for forgiveness? Do we feel ready for forgiveness?

Ask all these questions throughout your forgiveness journey so that you can track your progress and understand where you’re at in your development.

The Many Benefits of Qi Gong

The Many Benefits of Qi Gong

Are you feeling blocked up emotionally, spiritually, or physically? Have you been looking for a new practice that can double as an exercise routine and a spiritual ritual? There are so many fantastic practices that combine working the body with working the mind and spirit, but none so much as rewarding and satisfying as Qi Gong.

If you have heard of Tai Chi, then you’ll already be well on your way to learning Qi Gong, also known as Chi Kung. Similar to other practices that focus on energy within the body, Qi Gong helps improve your energy flow to heal, revive, and maintain the positive energy within yourself and even support physical health.

What is Qi Gong (Chi Kung)?

Qi Gong or Chi Kung is a centuries-old Chinese practice for physical and spiritual health. It combines the preciseness of technique and the monotony of repetition to help rejuvenate you and improve your energy flow. The method relies heavily on deep, controlled breathing and the twisting and stretching your body’s energy channels. Because of its proven success in improving physical health, especially when recovering from injuries, the practice has been an accepted addition to health-related methods by medical authorities in China.

The practice dates to 2696–2598 BCE and the Yellow Emperor. You can also find it in the Huangdi Neijing book of internal medicine, which has been the fundamental source for two millennia for Chinese medicine. The practice focuses on Qi, also known as Chi, the energy that flows through the body through gates and channels.

If you observe someone practicing Qi Gong, you’ll notice that some repetitious movements are gentle and slow while others are vigorous and demanding. The practice uses both small, almost imperceptible movements with large movements to align, stretch, and improve different Qi gates and channels throughout the body. Ultimately, the goal is to relax as much as possible so that Qi can flow freely.

The 12 Meridians in Tradition Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi flows through the 12 meridians of the body. These meridians are the basis for many healing practices, including acupuncture, meridian massages, and Tai Chi. Understanding the different meridians and their governance of Qi and the body is extremely important to your practice of Qi Gong.

The 12 meridians are connected to major organs in the body and work with the centerline meridians, also known as the conception vessel and the governing vessel. The principal meridians are:

    1. Lung meridian – through which we consume energy
    2. Large Intestine meridian – where we process waste
    3. Stomach meridian –  where we pull nutrients from things we consume
    4. Heart meridian – sends our blood throughout the body
    5. Small Intestine meridian – through which we pull water and nutrients
    6. Bladder meridian – through which we expel toxins
    7. Kidney meridian – where we regulate our male reproductive system, blood, and marrow
    8. Pericardium meridian – through which we regulate emotions, energy, and protection of the heart
    9. Triple Warmer meridian – through which we balance our wellness and metabolism
    10. Gall Bladder meridian – where we store toxins
    11. Liver meridian – through which we maintain our flexibility, circulate our Qi, and regulate the reproductive systems of females

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses the knowledge of these 12 meridians to direct the focus of acupuncturists, massage professionals, and Tai Chi practitioners. Massage and acupuncture practices, for instance, follow the mapped-out lines of Qi channels and gateways to apply pressure for certain conditions and complaints. On the other hand, Tai Chi practitioners use the knowledge of these channels to focus the breath and choose certain movements in achieving their goals.

Active vs. Passive Qi Gong

You can choose to follow active or passive Qi Gong or combine both to achieve your goals for the practice. Active Qi Gong is also known as dong gong, which focuses on enhancing Yang energy through active movements and breathing. Passive Qi Gong focuses on Yin energy by practicing stillness of both the body and mind, flexing the mind to alter energy flows instead of physical movements.

In other words, active Qi Gong looks a lot more like the traditional Tai Chi practices most people have witnessed, while passive Qi Gong looks like meditation.

Benefits of Qi Gong

At the elementary level, Qi Gong is a meditation, breathing, and exercise practice that can help the body and mind relax and heal. At a deeper level, improving the flow of Qi throughout the body revives your spirit and helps you take control of your life.

To properly benefit from practicing Qi Gong, one must learn about Qi, how it flows through the body, and precisely which different channels and gates regulate parts of the body and spirit. By understanding exactly how to use Qi Gong, you can target specific issues you might be dealing with and quickly help your body and mind to heal.

Supporting Mental Health

Both active and passive Qi Gong practices are great for supporting your mental health because the fundamental goal is to relax and focus on your breath. Meditation of any kind helps you to improve your awareness and presence in the moment, which is an effective method for checking in with how you feel physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. You can also help your mind to stop obsessing over the past or future, which are prevalent sources of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Both Eastern and Western medicine leaders promote stillness, deep breathing, and meditation as therapeutic practices that improve one’s ability to relax and shake off negative thoughts and emotions. Being still with yourself and improving your breath can reduce excessive adrenal responses in the body and stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system.

Lower Risk and Improve Symptoms of Chronic Disease

Because both active and passive Qi Gong methods are gentle practices, whether they include exercise or not, it is a great practice for supporting health even for those at risk of or suffering from chronic conditions.

Qi Gong does not interfere with other medical treatments, so it is entirely safe to practice as long as the practitioner does not push their body beyond their limits. These gentle and repetitious movements help to stimulate blood flow, stretch your muscles and ligaments, and lower stress. These benefits are proven to help lower your risk of suffering from many common chronic diseases.

For example, studies have shown that Qi Gong has improved symptoms common to heart disease and diabetes and lowered the risk of stroke.

Improving Muscle Strength and Precision

Qi Gong depends on your ability to repeat exact movements over a period of time, so performing them exactly over and over will help define your muscles. These practices, as a result, also improve your awareness of your physical presence within space. With enhanced muscle strength and stretches that increase your flexibility, you will get much better at putting your body into precise forms and staying very still, improving your balance.

Medical studies have shown improvements in how Qi Gong practitioners walk and balance, regardless of age. Older adults that practiced weekly for 12 weeks showed promising results, and young adults increased their stability scores by over 16% in another study over eight weeks.

Reach Spiritual Enlightenment

Aside from the health benefits, both physical and mental, of Qi Gong, there are so many other spiritual benefits. Those who dive into the meditation portion of Qi Gong during their practice can pursue enlightenment and improve their life of ritual and prayer. Overall, spiritual Qi Gong focuses on enhancing self-awareness and finding harmony and balance within oneself.

Through the regular and rigorous practice of active and passive Qi Gong methods, practitioners can take complete control of their body, mind, and spiritual energy. Mantras, prayers, and mudras are combined with mindful awareness and active management of energy flow within the body.

Achieving this ultimate awareness of energy flows allows expert practitioners to pinpoint imbalances and actively tend to them. Whether these imbalances are caused by physical injury, mental instability, emotional suffering, or even those passed down by previous generations, Qi Gong practitioners can actively target this imbalance and treat it using Qi Gong methods.

If you are interested in spiritual improvement using Qi Gong, I have many free resources including prayers, rituals, mantras, and more that you can incorporate into your practice. Once you begin, you’ll soon realize how freeing and empowering it is to slow down, breathe, and take control of your body, mind, and spirit.

The Wide Gap Between A Karmic and Dharmic Life

Philosophies on life are innumerable. So many different cultures, belief systems, religions, and other institutional or social factors cause each person to have a unique view and journey in life. While everyone is different, there are efforts to apply labels or categories that make general mindsets or stages of life identifiable and easier to discuss. Two popular labels like this are “karmic” and “dharmic,” Sanskrit terms for concepts held in Indian regions.

I would never force anyone to choose a label for themselves to identify their beliefs. Still, if you’re looking for an opportunity to discuss your mindset and life journey, labels can be the easier way to bridge that gap. These categories can also help you assess what you want out of life and whether your current relationships are healthy. Let’s discover what karmic and dharmic mean and how these mindsets can help guide your life.

What Is Karma?

Many more people in the West have heard of “karma” rather than “dharma.” You might have heard people warn others not to do something because it’s “bad karma” or that karma will come back later. Because it is much more popularized, understanding the karmic system has a lower barrier to entry for beginners.

“Karma” literally means “action” in Hindu. The karmic meaning refers to your day-to-day actions throughout your life. It relies on a moral system of good and bad actions, and each person builds up their karma with each thing they do. Actions as small as holding the door open for someone else or picking up something dropped by another can contribute to your karma.

Because karma focuses on the individual units of each action you take every minute of your life, it’s easy to focus on the small things without seeing them in the context of your entire life. However, building up as much positive karma as possible is the goal of your next life to be much improved from your current one. If you have too much bad karma, Hindus believe that you will end up a rung lower on the ladder of life in your next life.

As with all religious concepts, there are other interpretations of karma. A popular way of seeing karma is to see it as a guarantee that anything you do in life will be returned in kind. It is a way of seeing that the Universe is always in perfect balance. Every sacrifice will be repaid in favor, and every overstep or wrongdoing will be balanced by a loss in this life or the next.

What Does Dharma Mean?

Not as many people have heard of the word “dharma,” as there aren’t many popular sayings in the West that use the term. It might seem foreign at first, but dharma is actually a concept that is familiar once you grasp a true understanding of it.

“Dharma” is a much more expansive term than “karma.” Dharmic refers to your life’s duty or goal, which is different for everyone and is generally determined by your social class and life situation.

While dharma is certainly a motivation for the structure of Indian culture and society, it is not much different from concepts originated in other religions and belief systems. Many faiths, including Christianity, believe that physical life on Earth is not the beginning or the end of a soul’s journey but just a point at which humans are tested and given the opportunity to do good or bad things. What Christians do here on Earth directly affects where they believe they’ll end up after death, and they feel their life’s mission is to fulfill their highest purpose, which is very similar to the concepts of karma and dharma in India.

Strictly focusing on dharma alone, though, has its downfalls. For many in India who seek to live a dharmic life, it’s difficult to determine whether strictly staying within the tradition and your social class is enough to fulfill dharma. Some believe actions taken to stretch beyond the confines of one’s community are necessary to discover one’s true life purpose. As you can see, the dharmic system is much more focused on one’s life overall rather than day-to-day actions like karma.

How Are Dharma and Karma Related?

While dharma and karma seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum, both are integral to Hinduism. In simple terms, karma relates to your daily actions to achieve your dharma, which is your overall life’s mission. Not all actions you take relating to karma have to relate to your dharma directly. Still, the intention is to make sure you build up as much positive karma as possible so that you can break free of the reincarnation cycle and/or achieve enlightenment.

The tricky part? Karma and dharma are so intertwined that your karma directly relates to your dharma. What is good karma for one person might be bad for another, and there’s no set way to discover what your dharma is. For example, if your dharma is to fight for your nation in a war and you choose to become a soldier, then you’ll have good karma. If you decide to become a soldier, but your dharma is actually to become a teacher, that otherwise noble act would actually be considered bad karma.

As you can imagine, this immense uncertainty is stressful to many believers of the karmic and dharmic systems. Karma and dharma, however, don’t just stop at being concepts that dictate the way you live your life. “Karmic” and “dharmic” are also terms that relate to the lifestyle choices you make and the way you conduct relationships with others.

What Does It Mean to Live a Karmic Life?

As we explained previously, the karmic system focuses on the minute details of our everyday life—every action we take scores a point in the karmic system, whether it’s a negative or positive point. Living a karmic life follows this idea: everything is very focused on doing something with the expectation that you get something in return. Actions are contractual and you have expectations for what you will receive.

In other words, a karmic life is very utilitarian. You do well at your job to get better pay. You’re polite to your neighbors so that they’ll watch out for you in the case of an emergency or difficult situation. You drive your car responsibly so that you won’t have to pay for tickets or get points on your license.

Simply, the karmic system doesn’t concern itself with your desires. It’s not about you being a great person no matter what you choose to do because what you want from your life doesn’t matter as much as fulfilling your life’s purpose. Achieving positive karma points is the end goal, so you don’t necessarily do things because they are good to do.

Some people might argue that intention doesn’t matter. Utilitarians see all things as tools, a means to an end. So the intention behind their use doesn’t matter as much as achieving a positive result. For many people, living a karmic life is natural and organic and switching to a dharmic mindset is outlandish and difficult.

What is Dharmic Living?

While karmic lives are based on contracts and expectations, dharmic lives are about treating life with the view of the bigger picture. Everything is done with an overall view of life and the Universe in mind, making one less attached to the minute details and everyday actions than those who focus on a karmic life.

In other words, actions are not done for the immediate result they will achieve. Those seeking to live dharmic lives do not do a nice thing for a neighbor in order to turn around and immediately ask for a favor. They do not smile at others in order to be treated better, and they don’t help others fix their problems because they want to get something out of it.

Dharmic lives are based on love, truth, and virtue. Actions are done because they are the right actions to be done, because they are based in truth and love. Dharmic lives build themselves around virtue no matter what that means, and they do not expect anything in return. Overall, those who live a dharmic life are idealists—they have their eyes set on the bigger picture and fulfilling their life’s purpose, not necessarily their everyday utilitarian needs and desires.

What Is the Difference Between a Karmic and Dharmic Relationship?

By now, it is obvious these concepts of karmic and dharmic can be applied to relationships. Thinking of karmic as utilitarian and dharmic as idealist helps to understand how these different lifestyles function within their families, social circles, and romantic relationships.

For example, in karmic relationships, people use each other contractually. One would say, “I’ll love you if you love me back.” One gives of themselves only if the other is also giving, and one will remove themselves if they are not receiving what they want in return. Because of this contractual relationship of expectations, people can be reduced to tools, used only for what they can offer. Relationships might be reduced to sexual relations, money, or other useful and pleasurable things.

While entering these karmic relationships might feel consensual, it is often our strong unconscious pull towards the other person—not necessarily a decisive, intentional decision to enter a healthy and good relationship for our life’s purpose.

On the other hand, dharmic relationships are made of two people who don’t need each other. There is no reason to be together except for mutual love, respect, and desire to experience life by each other’s side. The relationship isn’t based on contracts, ultimatums, or expectations. These relationships enjoy the benefits of consensual experiences such as sexual relations, the sharing of money, and other exciting things, but these exchanges aren’t needed or expected. Overall, the goal is for both partners to reach their life’s highest purpose together.

Dharmic relationships are rare because both people need to have a higher level of emotional and spiritual maturity and a better understanding of their true selves. The dharmic relationship is not for the emotional healing of each person anymore. They’ve moved beyond that and are now looking for enlightenment.

Are Karmic Relationships Doomed?

As wide as the gap is between a karmic and dharmic life or relationship, not all is lost. It is very possible to turn a karmic relationship into a dharmic one. For many people, early relationships are karmic because their souls and emotional maturity are still young. Too early on life’s journey, these people often have not yet discovered what they truly need to live a fulfilling life and are still living within a contractual mindset.

As life goes on, it is more likely for people to begin seeking dharmic relationships, where the partnership is based on life’s goal rather than expectations for each other. That being said, a karmic relationship from earlier in life’s journey can certainly turn into a dharmic relationship. People can certainly grow and change together, and if the karmic bond is strong enough, they can evolve into two people living dharmic lives side by side.

At times, it can be difficult to continue the relationship if one partner is committed to becoming emotionally and spiritually mature while the other partner is not interested in this. It can be against the interests of both to continue together.

Mixing karmic and dharmic living can certainly cause challenges and turmoil in a relationship – although sometimes one partner’s dharmic path might actually be helped by their partner’s karmic outlook, becoming a vehicle for spiritual evolution. But when a partner with a dharmic focus engages with a partner with a karmic focus, challenges are natural and the relationship can turn toxic. If a partner is overly demanding and immersed in a contractual paradigm it can become oppressive and difficult.  In that case, the relationship will likely turn toxic, and both partners will feel misunderstood and unloved.

At the same time, if one person is working on themselves, growing, and evolving, but the other person seems stuck in place, it can be frustrating for both. One partner might feel like the person they once loved is no longer the person they are with. The other person might feel like their partner can no longer understand them or fulfill their spiritual and emotional needs.

Overall, the most important things in relationships are communication and honesty, no matter what stage of life. If both people stay open about their spiritual and emotional needs, then they will always be on the same page. They can continually check in with each other to see where the other is at in their life’s journey and quickly address any concerns instead of letting them fester.

Best case scenario, two people living karmic lives can help each other transcend into dharmic lives!
