In 2012, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson - the particle associated with the Higgs field, the invisible energy field that permeates all of space and that gives mass to the fundamental particles that interact with it. Before the Higgs field was confirmed, the standard model of particle physics had a problem: the equations predicted that the fundamental particles should be massless. They should travel at the speed of light, like photons. They should not form atoms, molecules, or matter. The Higgs field solves this problem by providing the mechanism through which massless particles acquire mass. The particles interact with the Higgs field and the interaction slows them, impedes them, gives them the property we call mass. Without the Higgs field, everything would be light. With the Higgs field, light becomes matter.
This is incarnation. The soul - the consciousness, the Brahman-awareness - is massless. It is not material. It does not occupy space. It does not interact with gravity. It is, like the massless particle before the Higgs interaction, traveling at the speed of light - which is to say, experiencing no time, occupying no space, existing in the timeless, spaceless ground that Vedanta calls nirguna Brahman. Then the soul interacts with the karmic field - the consciousness equivalent of the Higgs field. And the interaction gives the soul mass. Weight. Density. The property we call embodiment. The soul, interacting with the karmic field, slows down. It acquires the density that incarnation requires. It becomes material. Not because its nature changed. Because its interaction with the field produced the property - mass, embodiment, incarnation - that the uninteracted soul does not have.

The Higgs mechanism does not change the particle's fundamental nature. The electron is still an electron before and after its interaction with the Higgs field. The interaction gives it mass but does not alter its charge, its spin, its identity as an electron. The karmic mechanism does not change the soul's fundamental nature. The atman is still Brahman before and after its interaction with the karmic field. The interaction gives it embodiment but does not alter its awareness, its luminosity, its identity as consciousness. The embodiment is acquired. The consciousness is intrinsic. Bear with me.And the liberation - the moksha that the spiritual path moves toward - is the cessation of the interaction with the karmic field. The soul, having processed its karma, no longer interacts with the field. The mass drops away. The embodiment drops away. And the consciousness, no longer slowed by the karmic interaction, returns to its original state: massless, timeless, spaceless, traveling at the speed of light. Which is to say: traveling at the speed of awareness. Which is infinite. Which is what it always was. Before the field. Before the mass. The Higgs field gives mass to all particles equally. The field does not discriminate. The electron and the top quark interact with the same field - they acquire different masses because their coupling constants are different, not because the field plays favorites. Think about that for a second. The field itself is neutral, indifferent, just there doing its thing. It's the particle's own internal properties that determine how much mass it picks up from swimming through this cosmic soup. The karmic field gives embodiment to all souls equally. The field does not discriminate. The saint and the sinner interact with the same field - they acquire different incarnations because their karmic coupling constants are different, not because the field punishes or rewards. This shit blew my mind when I first saw the connection. We're not dealing with some cosmic judge sitting up there deciding who gets the good body and who gets the rough ride. We're dealing with a completely impersonal mechanism ~ your own accumulated patterns determine how you couple to the field of incarnation. Know what I mean? Same field, different coupling strength, different results.
Bouchet's incarnation had a specific karmic coupling constant - the specific interaction between his soul and the karmic field that produced his specific body, in his specific historical moment, with his specific challenges and his specific gifts. Your coupling constant is specific to you. Your mass is specific to you.
