In the heart of India, the ancient sages of Advaita Vedanta proclaimed the ultimate truth of non-duality. They taught that the individual soul, the *Atman*, is not separate from the ultimate reality, the universal consciousness known as *Brahman*. They are one and the same, like a drop of water and the ocean. The illusion of separation, which they called *maya*, is the veil that conceals this intense truth. It is the world of names and forms, the ever-changing drama of life that we mistake for reality. But behind this veil, the sages tell us, lies the unchanging, eternal reality of pure being, consciousness, and bliss (*sat-chit-ananda*). The great mantra of Advaita, "Tat Tvam Asi" ... "Thou art That" ... is a powerful reminder of our true identity. It is a call to awaken from the dream of separation and realize our inherent oneness with the Divine. ### Mystical Christianity: The Sacred Marriage The Christian mystics, too, spoke of a deep and intimate union with God. They described a path of transformation, a journey of purification and surrender that leads to the "spiritual marriage" or "transforming union." This journey often begins with what St. John of the Cross called the "dark night of the soul." Here's the thing: it's a period of intense spiritual desolation, a time when the old self begins to die and we are stripped of all our attachments and false identities. It is a painful but necessary process of purification, preparing the soul for its union with the Divine. Out of this darkness, a new light is born. The soul emerges, purified and humbled, ready to receive the divine embrace. In this state of union, the mystic experiences a striking sense of love, joy, and peace that surpasses all understanding. They become a living vessel of God's love, radiating it out into the world. ### Sufism: The Path of the Beloved In the mystical tradition of Islam, known as Sufism, the path to union is the path of love. The Sufis see God as the Beloved, and the soul as the lover, forever yearning for a glimpse of the Beloved's face.If you have not read The Essential Rumi, you are missing some of the most beautiful spiritual poetry ever written. *(paid link)* Seriously. This guy understood the marriage between human longing and divine love better than anyone who's ever put pen to paper. His verses don't just describe mystical union ~ they drag you kicking and screaming into the experience itself. When Rumi writes about the beloved, you feel that ache in your chest. You know what I mean? That desperate hunger for something beyond the ordinary bullshit of daily life. I've read those poems at 3 AM when I couldn't sleep, when everything felt empty and pointless, and suddenly there's Rumi telling me exactly what my soul was trying to say but couldn't find the words for. The man wrote like he was on fire. Like he'd been split open and was bleeding truth all over the page. That's what real mystical poetry does ~ it doesn't explain the experience, it becomes the experience.
This path is one of passionate devotion, of surrendering the self in the fire of divine love. The Sufi concept of *fana*, or annihilation, speaks of the dissolution of the ego, the "I" that separates us from God. As the ego dissolves, the soul enters a state of *baqa*, or subsistence in God, where it realizes its true nature as a reflection of the Divine. The poetry of Rumi, the great Sufi master, is proof of this passionate love affair with the Divine. His words are a call to the heart, an invitation to dance in the ecstasy of divine union. ### Buddhism: The End of Suffering In the teachings of the Buddha, the ultimate goal is *Nirvana*, the extinguishing of the flame of self and the cessation of all suffering. not an annihilation of being, but rather the realization of our true nature as boundless, interconnected, and free. The Buddha taught that the root of all suffering is attachment, our clinging to the illusion of a separate self. By letting go of this attachment, we can awaken to the reality of *sunyata*, or emptiness. not a void, but a dynamic, vibrant emptiness that is the source of all creation. In this realization, we see that we are not separate islands, but interconnected waves in the vast ocean of existence. This understanding gives rise to a deep sense of compassion for all beings, for we see that their suffering is our suffering, and their joy is our joy. ## The Inner Marriage: Practical Wisdom for the Journey My dear friends, these ancient traditions offer us a wealth of wisdom, but the journey to mystical union is not just a matter of intellectual understanding. It is a path of direct experience, a journey that must be walked, not just talked about. So, how can we cultivate this union in our own lives? ### The Path of Self-InquiryPalo santo has been used for centuries to clear negative energy and invite in the sacred. *(paid link)* The shamans knew something we're just rediscovering ~ that certain plants carry frequencies that can shift the very atmosphere of a space. When you light that sacred wood, you're not just burning incense. You're participating in an ancient dialogue between matter and spirit, creating a bridge between the mundane and the mystical. Think about that. The smoke doesn't just smell good... it literally changes the energetic signature of your environment, preparing the ground for deeper spiritual work.
Turn your attention inward. Ask yourself the most fundamental question: "Who am I?" Observe the ever-changing space of your thoughts, emotions, and sensations. Are you these fleeting phenomena? Or are you the silent, unchanging awareness in which they arise and disappear? This practice of self-inquiry, of looking deeply into the nature of your own being, is a powerful way to pierce the veil of illusion and awaken to your true Self. ### The Path of Love and Devotion Cultivate a heart-centered connection to the Divine, in whatever form lands with you. Whether you call it God, Spirit, or the Universe, the name is not important. What matters is the sincerity of your love and devotion. Engage in practices that open your heart, such as prayer, chanting, or simply expressing your gratitude for the gift of life. Let your love for the Divine be the guiding star on your journey. ### The Path of Presence Find the sacred in the ordinary. Bring your full attention to the present moment, to the simple act of breathing, walking, or sipping a cup of tea. In this state of mindfulness, the mind becomes quiet, and you can begin to sense the subtle presence of the Divine in every moment. ## The Fruits of Union What awaits us at the end of this journey? What are the fruits of this sacred marriage? Years ago, during a darshan with Amma, I saw grief and anger in the eyes of so many around me, including my own reflection. In those crowded rooms filled with her embrace and presence, the heaviness in my chest would sometimes shift, releasing breath and tightness I'd carried from childhood wounds and the relentless startup world’s pressure. It wasn’t some airy feeling of divine love, but a tangible loosening inside my ribcage—a doorway opening, a quiet peace crawling up through the fibers of my being. That’s where the soul and Spirit began their silent, wordless dance for me.Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now remains one of the most important spiritual books of our time. *(paid link)*
It is a state of real peace, a peace that is not dependent on external circumstances. It is a boundless love that embraces all of creation without judgment or reservation. It is a deep sense of interconnectedness, a knowing that we are all part of one great family. When you realize this union, you become a guide of light in the world. You live a life of purpose and service, not out of a sense of duty, but out of a spontaneous overflowing of love. You become a living embodiment of the Divine, proof of the beauty and grace of the human spirit. ## Your Invitation to the Wedding My beloved friends, the invitation to the sacred marriage has been sent. It is written on the scroll of your own heart. The journey may not always be easy, but I promise you, it is the most rewarding journey you will ever undertake. So, I invite you to say "yes" to this call. Say "yes" to the longing of your own soul. Say "yes" to the love that is waiting to embrace you. May your journey be blessed with grace, courage, and a deep and abiding love. May you come to know the joy of mystical union, the sacred marriage of your soul and the Spirit. With all my love, Paul Wagner
